Every year, my family visits the Farnsworth Inn for a meal. For my 30th birthday this year, I decided I would like to hold it at Farnsworth Inn. My husband booked the main dining room over 1 month prior to our date, May 2, 2015. We booked the room for 32 people, all coming from Baltimore, MD. The night of May 1st, my husband received an email again confirming the reservation. Around lunch time on May 2nd (the day of the party), an email was sent to my husband by Farnsworth Inn saying that they double booked us and that we could use the room only if we arrive at 5pm or 8pm (reservation was for 6:30pm). They did not call my husbands phone, only sent an email. We were touring the battlefield during the day so my husband was not checking his emails. Around 4:45pm, he checked his emails and found their email saying they double booked us. My husband immediately called the restaurant to speak to the manager. He got on the phone and said that everything was handled and not to worry. When we arrived, they had moved our reservation to the back room of the bar, not the dining room!! We were livid! My husband and mom tried to talk to the manager but he would not come out of the back. He would only talk through another staff member to them. If I wanted to have my 30th birthday party in a bar, I surely wouldnt have had 32 of my closets friends and family drive to Gettysburg from Baltimore! Not to mention that they only had one poor soul working our party so half of my guests had already eaten their food while the other half were still being served. It was ridiculous. Farnsworth Inn has lost a customer for life. I was so upset that my friends and family had driven all this way to be put in the back room of the bar because suddenly they realized they had double booked us. Unacceptable!!!!!!!

The menu outside noted vegetarian options which would have been nice except the menu handed to us at the table didnt reflect the menu posted outside. My boyfriend asked the waitress if the vegetarian options were still available off menu. As before we asked to be seated, he made a note of asking the hostess if the menu options outside were available and on the menu. She said yes, the menu outside and the menu inside were one and the same, everything was available. After finding out I wouldnt be able to eat anything but a salad or a side order of fries since the menus differed, I kept my disappointment hidden as we were out for a romantic evening and my boyfriend wanted to try this place. My boyfriend ordered the French dip. It was very small with little meat in it. The slaw served with it came in a tiny dipping sauce size cup. After asking the waitress about the vegetarian options and being told those options werent available, I ordered a large garden salad. It came out looking like a side salad someone would order with their dinner not as a main dish. Shredded carrot, cucumbers, white onion, small croutons, and iceberg lettuce on a small dinner plate. Definitely not worth the nearly $10 price. We both left disappointed. We drove home stopping at another restaurant on the way to get something filling. The Farnsworth home is historically interesting, dining experience not memorable and very disappointing. In future, we will not be returning.

The atmosphere was great. My Fiance and I were a little concerned with the price- it was a little steeper than we would normally pay for dinner- but just being in the house was great. The story teller was great- very informative and VERY entertaining. The server was also very good- always making sure our drinks were full and never had a moment without something else on our plate. The food- was OK. They started with a delicious potato soup- followed by a salad with a very good dressing. Then they served 3 different main courses and 3 different side dishes. All of the sides were delicious- the main courses- not so much. They served ham- which was good but nothing special, chicken pot pie- which was more of a mushy noodley mess. It didnt taste like chicken pot pie at all. Then they served Game pie. It was similar to a chicken pot pie- but had turkey, duck, and pheasant in it. That is not a dish for me. My suggestion would be to make a few dishes that are from the time period- but that are more likely that people will eat them. We had 2 kids sitting next to us that didnt eat anything because nothing appealed to them and @ $40 a person- im sure their grandparents were not thrilled. On a brighter note tho- all the sides were wonderful and the apple pie they served for dessert was to die for. All in all- the experience was a good one.

If I could give this place no stars I would. The atmosphere is okay. Its really complicated to actually get in to the actual restaurant though. And by the time you get up to the hostess inside they tell you there is a 25 minute wait. There were several tables open and could of been seated right away. Ontop of that we purchased tickets the previous day to lunch to meet Lee and his wife. It cost 105.79 dollars when on the menu what we would of ate did NOT add up to that amount. We spoke to a lady yesterday and she told us because we could not make it, to come back the next day, today, to eat. When we got there, we asked them about what Cheryl told us to ask. They told us they could not do that and proceeded to fight with us. The lady that we spoke to told us she was too busy and had to handle other problems and she made another employee take care of us. HE fought us and only gave us 34.85 in credit. We couldnt afford what we originally ordered. I am very mad and so is my family. We are not from Gettysburg and we will never come back to Sweneys tavern. There are also small children working here, delivering food, getting refills, and behind the bar. They have to be atleast 12. I am very disappointed in this experience and also the fact that they are making a profit off unknowing tourists who want a piece of civil war history.

I absolutely love this inn! When I called to make my reservation, Tony was so helpful. He didnt make me feel rushed. Then when I checked in, he actually showed me some of the rooms that werent occupied. It was so nice of him to take the time to do that. He explained how some objects are moved during the night, or there are knocking sounds. I dont think I believe in Ghosts, but at 3am I probably would, so I was too scared to stay in those rooms. I stayed in the Custer room, which is not of the main house. I read the reviews warning people not to do this and to only chose rooms in the main house, but I loved the Custer room! It was very quiet. This inn had so much character and 1800-feel, as if Daniel Boone was next door. I loved the little cafe just outside my hotel door, with walls of foliage. I loved the little black iron gate that opened to a narrow little brick path that swerved around a tiny goldfish pond and bushes and flowers. The cook a nice breakfast for you in the morning. They asked me if I wanted eggs, french toast, or pancakes, with fruit and potato fries. THe waitress was extremely nice. This inn was just about the nicest place Ive stayed in! (and Im not being paid to say this, I swear!)
