I love the Kitchen, so it pains me to write this review, but the customers have to know. I usually love the servers (I mostly go on Friday/sat/sun), but today I went in on Tuesday morning and it was AWFUL. The waitress was inattentive and rude. People in the service industry must smile at the customers and make them feel welcome. After my fiend and I had our breakfast, I stayed at the front of the cafe because I wanted to order a flan to go, yet the waitresses completely ignored me for a solid 10 minutes. The place was NOT busy - 3 tables taken and the rest empty so I know I was not imposing at the time of any rush, yet the two waitresses were just calmly chatting at the back of the restaurant for 5 minutes, and when one of the waitresses was done talking, she made eye contact with me several times and probably saw me start to talk, yet ignored me. I walked away without a goodbye from the staff nor a flan. The best people who work there - Peter and the two Rachels are the best employees there and make customers want to come back. The waitresses and the host this morning were not top notch and I would not recommend going to the kitchen on Tuesday mornings. When your host makes you ask for a table for two and doesnt greet - there is a problem. With that said, I love the kitchen and I will be coming back and I would recommend it to my friends, but only on certain days when the qualified employees work.

Almost every time weve come here, the food has been inconsistent in quality - some people were happy with what they ordered, but someone else was definitely not. Last time the chicken caesar had flavorless dressing and that sketchy rubbery kind of chicken we like to call "meow meow" chicken, and the meatloaf, though tasty, was much closer to a sloppy joe in consistency. In a past visit Ive had an almost raw catfish sandwich (which I complained about and got ignored) and fried tomatoes that were bland mush. But Ive also had a perfectly fine burger and good fish tacos and tasty soup, and I have several friends who have always been satisfied here, so I guess its just a crapshoot. Weve never tried breakfast, just come for lunch or dinner. The menu has a lot of different items (which may be part of the problem). The service is usually quick and the place is usually busy, its one of the few places in Salem where you can get anything other than fast food late at night, so it does have that going for it.

I love this restaurant that has finally brought quality everyday dining to Salem. I go several times a week. But lately Ive noticed a number of the restaurants policies that make me wonder whether I really want to spend my money here. Prominently displayed on the bulletin boards by the bathrooms are political propaganda against the Salem public transit initiative, and a sternly worded notice to employees that they will be fired for even having their cell phones out in their hands while on the property. Today I watched the maitre d confiscate two coffees from patrons before she would agree to seat them saying "we dont allow outside drinks". Really? These folks are gonna spend $50 on brunch, but youre worried about them not spending $2 on coffee ? It gives the impression that the owner cares more about pinching pennies than about their employees or their customers.

First time my girlfriend and I are here we were pretty blown away by how great the food was. Home made, fresh, and lots of it. However, weve made the apparently mistake of coming here on a busy Friday evening and a busy Saturday evening. Both times service was very poor. Our server was not very polite, seemed very rushed, and many, many minutes passed until a different server decided to come out and take our order. She didnt seem enthused either. I love this place, but we just dont feel very welcomed. Its never a sure decision whether or not we have to ear here, we have to weigh whether or not the food is worth the sluggish and impersonal service. Dont be fooled, though, it would be hard to say no to an offer to eat at the Kitchen, but not everyone is like I am.

Its no Gordon Ramsay, but it has the potential. We had the California Benedict and the Veggie Benedict. Both were good, but not fantastic. The hollandaise sauce was "unusual" in that it was a little spicy; it would have been nice to be warned about it. The eggs were overcooked, but not to the point where they were rubbery. Just a little bit. There was also too much bacon on the California, but that could be a personal preference, as everyone loves lots of bacon. Kind of wanted to give 3 stars, but the kid who made our food tipped it to 4. He put so much care into making our benedicts. So carefuly placed every layer, made sure everything was so perfect. Thanks kid, we appreciated it!

Outstanding food from Salems only decent 24 hour joint! I love ordering the breakfast items here; their pancakes/french toast is killer, the chicken fried steak is phenomenal and the grits are to die for! When Ive had a late work day and none of the other decent restaurants are open, I come here and have what is often the best meal Ive had in a long time. I am planning to start coming here more often, because it really is a gem of the abysmal Salem night scene. I should note that I have never once been here in the daylight hours, but perhaps I should try them for lunch sometime. You will not regret going to The Kitchen on Court Street!

I feel like 2 stars is incredibly generous for this place. I am from KCMO and I travel all over for work. Something I thoroughly enjoy when I spend the weekend somewhere is search out the local "hotspot" for real hometown eats. The employees in this place where incredibly rude and unprofessional..the atmosphere was that of a low grade cafeteria. I was very disappointed to see such a well placed establishment be such a dive. Also I had the gumbo and it was not at all fresh and it was awful..Iv been to the south many many times and I hate that I spent money on this dish..

Terrible customer service. My party of 2 was refused a booth because it was their "busy time". Checking Google I saw that actually it was around the time they were winding down (11pm on a Thursday). They had several booths open and plenty of smaller tables open. I looked inside about 30 minutes later and the place was almost empty again with plenty of space available for larger parties if they needed it. I almost never leave reviews but I was really looking forward to eating here until I was put off by the staff who refused to accommodate my party.

This is a good restaurant in the heart of Salem. The staff are friendly and do a good job. There are a few cons though. Space is tight, with little standing room at the entrance and longer than average wait times. I ordered Ranchero which was good and my over easy eggs were delightful, though the dish was heavy on the beans and light on the avocado. My wife ordered the taco salad which she liked. They have high chairs for kids, but no changing table in the bathroom.
