I went here knowing that they were only rated at 3 1/2 stars. Usually I obey that red flag, but I was in town for an event at the Riverfront Park and wanted to keep my dinner within walking distance. I figured it was worth a shot because the menu looked appetizing online. The place was dead at 6 on a Saturday. That should have been the next red flag, but I still proceeded. The interior had nice modern decor, with the exception of the awful booth upholstery that looked like it was recycled from a bowling alley out of the 80s. They had some sleep smooth jazz playing...just not my thang. My waiter seemed friendly enough at the start. Clearly though, service was not his forte. After he took my order, he seated a table of 4 ladies and managed to bring them all drinks before me. I know I was only a lonely table of one that day, but still...not okay. It took him about 15 minutes to get my drink to me. I ordered a Asian Mojito, which came in a pint glass...thought it was my lucky day, but it was extremely weak for a delayed $9 mixed drink. Portions on the appetizers, "To Share," plates were smaller than expected, especially at $9 and $8 a piece. The steak skewers included 2 skewers that were about 5" long, extremely fatty and rather disappointing. The foccacia bread was nice, but came in a tiny personal pizza sized pan, probably in the 5" diameter range..still a bit pricey for bread. It took some time to get the check and even more time for him to take my payment. His bus boy, who was very friendly, wound up seeing the look of frustration on my face and took my payment. Typically, even if the food is bleh and the service is okay, I still leave at least a 20% tip. This was the first time I ever left a poor tip, something like 15%. I felt guilty, but not as guilty as I did for awful service and mediocre food experience.

It was my second time going to Orupa and again it was AMAZING. The first time I was on a dinner date, she had the pork chop with crab over a bearnaise sauce with mashed potatoes. I had a ribeye, mid rare(of course) with a bacon prosciutto marmalade. My steak was cooked with finesse and PERFECT temperature. She said the pork chop was excellent. The service was great, my water never got passed half way and our server, Alyssa was kind, attentive and professional. On my second visit, during lunch, I had the Angus burger. My friend had the wiener schnitzel. Again, I was more than satisfied! The burger was on point and the flavor was delicious. The bread was obviously made the same day in the kitchen. My friend was very happy with his crispy schnitzel. The food is consistent. The service is great. I even talked to the owner, Hans, briefly and he was a happy guy who obviously has a passion for this. I CANT wait to go back!

Ordered the special opaka-paka and a salad. The presentation was nice, but the fish was bland and pretty flavorless. The skin was also left on the bottom, so it had to be picked around. I asked for the chicken on the side for my salad, since I dont eat poultry. The waiter repeated the order to me and the salad still came out with chicken throughout, he admitted he was wrong, though. We asked for another salad politely, and it took 20 minutes for it to come out of the kitchen. So one of us had a plate of food to eat and one didnt. Typically I come to a restaurant with my man to eat together. The beer selection wasnt bad. The atmosphere was nice, and people seemed happy. The quality of food was not worth the price. I would like to see them live up to the atmosphere they are trying to create.

Been to Orupa many times; always good until recently. Last visit, couldnt use a coupon if dining on the roof. Today, couldnt get happy hour prices on anything if using a coupon for dinner. Coupon was BOGO for entrees, and couldnt use it for "Plate to Share," even if price was lower than purchased entree. Hamburger ordered medium rare had no pink in it at all, was dry, and cheese was completely not melted. It did, however, come with condiments on it which I didnt order. On the plus side, server did a great job: attentive and knowledgeable. Presentation of wifes salmon dish was excellent, and tasty as well. Has Orupa changed hands? We were very disappointed...

We waited twenty minutes to be seated due to it being "very busy" on the terrace at 4.30 pm on a Sunday (the entire restaurant was quiet and empty- they did not ask us if wanted to wait at the bar). We were led up and there were 6 or 7 tables free and a total of about 6 people in the 3 occupied tables. We then waited about 15 minutes for a menu... Finally we realized nobody was going to attend us so we left and went to Archive. They might not have good happy hr prices but at least they acknowledge your presence and serve you as fast as they can. I will not return to this restaurant and would not recommend it to anyone.

dont, I repeat do not reserve for parties of 10-15 ever. Even in their slow time, do not, trust me. I had bday reservations made almost 2 weeks ago, and not one extra person showed up. The owner/cook unresponsive and uncaring. Parties were not informed for over an hour after ordering that the items they chose were no longer available, basic beer wait times up to I kid you not, 1 hour. The bar must have been PACKED you may think. I physically went downstairs 3 times to investigate and there were only 3 tables of 2 or 3 people. Stick to a party of 2 people MAX and you MAY be OK.

Chef Afshar cooks up some awesome dishes with his 30 years experience in the industry. The atmosphere is inviting and warm. The prices are much more value priced than Afshar's previous establishment but quality is still very much the same, however the previous reviewer was entirely correct on the rude treatment of customers and employees by Hans and Helli, which may lend some credibility to the unexperienced servers, turn over is high and the poor treatment has become wellknown in the industry. Bottom line food is great but the owners could act a lot nicer.

I visited orupa yesterday and had the sirlion special and it was to die for!l The quality of the food is the main reason i will be going back! I have only lived in salem for a couple of years and there are definitely a few boom or bust restaurants in town. Orupa is definitely on top of my list. The servers are always friendly and knowledgable. i caught wind of orupa through the statesmen journal in 2013 because of there highly touted martinis. I dont usually review restaurants online but after the meal i had last night i couldnt help it. I will be going back!

TERRIBLE SERVICE. We arrived, ordered drinks, ordered our meal, and were munching on our bread when the OWNERS WIFE came to our table and told us we needed to move. WITHOUT ASKING she began tossing our dishes, glasses and utensils onto a neighboring table. Then SHE RESET OUR PREVIOUS TABLE WITHOUT EVEN WIPING IT DOWN! I have never encountered this rudeness nor this disregard to cleanliness in any restaurant. DO NOT EAT HERE.
