This is my initial visit to a Japanese restaurant in Oregon. The proverbial bar wasnt set to high. First noticed that I wasnt greeted upon crossing the threshold of the entrance. If you are not familiar with Japanese tradition, it is customary in any Japanese business to greet you when you walk in. For instance, in Japan if you pop your head into a store the staff will all say "Irrashaimase!" which means welcome. Of course they would said "Welcome" or some other greeting in America, but none happened. The second thing which I feel needs improvement is the order in which your meal is served. These folks served my miso soup with the main entree and it took a while to get to me. Im just saying that a nice warm bowl of miso soup on a chilly night to warm my bones would have been great, but nope. Third, is the length of time to be served. It took over 15 mins to get my food on the bar, which where I sat. Fourthly, was the clutter. I saw rags sitting on espresso machine and stuff all cluttered on the service bar. Finally, unfriendly service. I felt they wanted me in and out. Shoot it was only 7pm on a Sat night. No cordial conversation, barely any eye contact. The food was aight, but probably wouldt return.

I really enjoy eating and spending time at Sho (previously Kojis). The sushi is very fresh and the artistry and care placed in the preparation of the dishes shows that the employees consistently care about what they do. This pride is exemplified by Yoshi, Shos head sushi chef, who is a skilled and creative artist and in my opinion is one of the best sushi chefs in Portland. I also very much enjoy the other people who work at Sho and find the service to be friendly and attentive; except perhaps when the restaurant is very busy. At these times the service might slow a bit but the friendliness of the employees who work at Sho never wavers. I especially have enjoyed watching how the owner and management of Sho have consistently and incrementally worked to improve all aspects of the restaurant over the years I have been going there. From the menu, to the saki selection, to the deco of the restaurant, nothing seems to be "good enough" for the owner of this business. This drive for continuous improvement is the primary reason that Sho is a very good restaurant that will only get better as time goes on.

I dont know exactly how to do this.... I dont ordinarily allow money to have any weight on my enjoyment of any product or service. If its good... its just good. I think what is different here... is that there was such a distinct diminished return on the investment that I made in this lunch. There is something about the fact that I could have spent less than half what I spent and probably got twice the food had I chosen to get a stupid lunch bento box or some other lunch special. Instead - I got what I wanted and damnit the food was good. Look at the pictures I posted. You can just glance at the food and know that its delicious. It is. Then why am I only giving it 3 stars? Well... cause lunch was $26.... $32 with a tip. No cocktail... in fact nothing to drink.... just three delicious small plates. Im gonna say it one more time. The food was good. The sashimi was a perfect temperature, it was cut perfectly both in size and grain, the seaweed salad was fuc$ing delicious... everything was great. It just cost a little too much... thats all.

Its been a while since Ive had great Japanese food and every dish they brought out hit the spot. We had over eight people in our party and the food came promptly, the service was superb, and the atmosphere was just perfect. I loved everything about this place. And for people complaining about the sushi being bland... youre just used to American sushi all dressed up in funky sauces and rolled around in three day old Rice Krispies. Sushi is supposed to be simple. So if you want authentic Japanese food, this is the place youve been looking for. If you want something else, go to the nearest gas station and grab sushi from there, sit in a corner, and think about all of the other bad decisions youve made in your lifetime.

We love this place. There isnt anything we have tried that we didnt like, and some of our favorites are all signature sushi rolls, ramen, and fresh brewed genmaicha (tea). Weve been to some of the special events, including the sake tasting, and theyre always a great time. Some of the booths are a little odd how someone on the other side of the divider can bounce you, but its not very common that weve experienced that and after the first few times, weve overcome the oddness. There arent many good sushi places in this area, let alone full-blown Japanese restaurants so this is definitely a favorite of ours.

As Kojis this restaurant was always a reliable place to get good sushi. Since the manager bought it and made it his own, its better every time we go in. Creative sushi, incredibly fresh. Beautiful and tasty alternative Japanese dishes. And an amazing assortment of sake, with a host that is willing to share with you all the nuances of each. It doesnt get any better, and weve been to nearly all the sushi restaurants in the greater Portland area. All that and its still the kind of place you can drop into on a whim and get warm service and a quiet spot to sit and talk.

Compared to all the nigiri conveyor belt places in the area, this was a MUCH appreciated find. Owner was super nice, I came by myself. And the sake I asked for they were out of, so i given an upgrade in size. Sushi-ya was very polite and helpful in choosing what was fresh. BONUS: they had sumo wrestling playing. Cost was well within reason. Bottle of sake, 3 orders of nigri, poke and a roll brought me to just over $70. I intend on being a regular!

This place is great! Wed driven past it many times and never thought to stop in until we moved a few blocks away and decided to give it a whirl. The food is always amazing! I usually get the ramen (which is authentic and delicious), the bento special (I always get it with pork katsu and beef teriyaki), or the sushi combination. Great food, great service, great atmosphere, and you can buy a few of their sauces and dressings to take home.

Food was mediocre for the price, and the service was one of the unfriendliest Ive experienced, so much so it really affected our experience of the restaurant. The waitress was super stiff, never smiled and it was just... really awkward. Granted, I went here in February; not sure if the staff is all the same. You definitely dont get enough food here for how much it is; I wouldnt come back unless theres a change in menu/ownership.

Ive been coming here a while; its within walking distance of where I live and I definitely love the food. The other night though, I left my wallet at my table and once they discovered it, one of the staff sprinted after me to return it even though Id gotten fairly far away by then and he was pretty winded by the time he caught up with me. Now thats the kind of crazy shenanigans that gets you a 5-star review.
