Jam is fine. Ive always gotten fantastic service, at the small and large Jam both, my coffee has never gone cold. The atmosphere is generally pretty cozy, if a little loud sometimes. Personally I find noisy, bustling breakfast places comforting, so I dont mind. The food is average. Ive been a few times and gotten scrambles, which are always too much food (I do wish they had more small plate options) and just kind of thrown on the plate - part of the reason I like to go out to eat at all is having food presented to me, and the sloppy style always makes me feel like Im paying too much for the meal. Their add-ons and sides are also really expensive ($1.25 for 1/4 avocado, $3 for bacon), so trying to build a smaller plate if youre not a huge eater ends up being about as expensive as a big one. I got the french toast last time I was there, and it was really good, though it said it was served with seasonal berries and I think a more appropriated term would be "garnished" as there was maybe one strawberry and six or seven blueberries. Dont go here expecting to get a balanced meal, but they do serve the carbs up right - the pancakes are great too. I wont say no to going here, but I also wont wait in a long line to eat here (sometimes on weekends its up to an hour) - Id sooner hop across the street and grab a bite at Grand Central.

This has easily become a favorite of my wifes and mine. After she went there for an office breakfast, she told me we HAD to go. As a vegetarian, this is one of the best Portland restaurants we have been to. Almost all breakfast dishes are vegetarian, and many include vegetarian meats which are delicious. The last time we visited was on a Sunday morning. We knew it would be packed, but my wife assured me it would be worth a wait. After about 30 minutes, we were seated. By the time our food rolled around, I had completely forgotten about the wait. The Cheech & Chong scramble was incredibly tasty with the vegetarian chorizo, and my Tys Big Breakfast had great meatless gravy. Weve also had the Huevos Rancheros, which is so huge my wife ate it for 2 meals. Highly recommend! Its very tasty. Its hard to find breakfast food better than this. Honestly any other breakfast restaurant weve been to since has completely paled in comparison. We will be coming back here often. Have yet to try the lunch menu, but am looking forward to it.

the last time I went to jam, I ordered a traditional breakfast sandwich with over-medium eggs. it came out and the yolks were runny. when I told my hipster server that it wasnt what I wanted, he looked at me like a deer in the headlights and all he said was "ok" (no "sorry about that") and then after he put my order back in he made a point to come over and tell me that at jam, what I got was considered over-medium and if I wanted the yolks hard, I should order them "over hard" next time (google that term - Ive never heard of that before). ok. I got my sandwich with hard, chewy bacon that kept getting stuck in my teeth, and with slightly runny/slightly hard yolks.. what any reasonable person WOULD call "over medium". I dont like snarky servers that make a point to get the last word in. I just left it at that. theyve screwed up my orders before and never show any remorse. Ive given them too many chances and have no reason to ever go back.

There is a lot of seats here ever since they connected the two rooms. However, there will still be a line. Get here early to avoid said line. When you are in the restaurant, you will understand why it is so big in Portland. They push the vegetarian options a lot. In fact, they have a "only 1 substitution" policy in place. While Im sure if you are a good customer, it isnt busy and you make friends with your waitress, you can get around that. However, if you want a full meat option, you might have to be hunting. I picked up the Other One. A bacon, egg, hashbrown and cheese wrap. Everything else had vegetarian chorizo and vegetarian sausage, or something similar. So the one substitution policy kept me from order it, as I dont like being a bother to restaurants. With that said, the food was very good! Just keep everything I said in mind and you can sit down quickly and get something that is right for you!

The food is so good. It just is. There is usually a wait (which should indicate how good it is) and it can get really loud in there, 2 things that would normally turn me off in a place, but no. Its just that good. The staff is super friendly and efficient. When the house is packed, youll still have your water & coffee topped off every 5 minutes. The coffee is a little darker than I like it (& I like it dark), but its still yum. The atmosphere is loud, but so artsy & cheery that it feels good to be there even if, like me, youre not a huge fan of noise. 4 words: Grand Marnier French Toast. I was just in Portland for an overnight and I was hemming & hawing over what to eat while my husband was at a conference when I remembered Jam and then suddenly there was no other choice, I *had* to have that scrumptious treat! 20 minute wait to seat just me and worth every minute and every bite!

My first visit to this place was outstanding. Very friendly server. I was eating vegan and was having a hard time deciding between the oat and chai pancakes and the tofu scramble. I opted for the latter, and without my asking, she kindly brought me a substantial sample of the pancake. It was so awesome I slightly regretted my decision until she brought me the tofu scramble. A huge mound on the plate, and it was seasoned superbly. I loved every bite. I also had asked to substitute the toast for a little sauteed spinach. Instead, they put the mound of tofu scramble on a huge bed of sauteed spinach. In short, very tasty, cozy "local" atmosphere, super-friendly staff, and generous portions make this place my #1 pick for breakfast in Portland. AND, an added bonus is they serve a bottomless cup of Stumptowns Holler Mountain Blend. Could it get any better?

We waited to get seated on a Sunday at 11am. I had the corned beef hash. It was mostly hash brown potatoes with a few sparse chunks of nice tasting corned beef (horseradish sauce?) and bits of peppers and onions served dry. Came with one slice of toasted bread cut in half (Daves killer). There was bulk jam (fig, I think) on the table that was very good. Portion size was fine, but not like the portions and pure beef content at Biscuits cafe. My wife had hash browns with additions, which is a great option for vegetarians. The space is cramped and loud with background music that added to the noise level making it difficult to hear the conversation at our table for six. Prices were medium high and value was fine. I would go back if there is not a line to try something else that might be better. The flavors are inspiring. They need a bigger place.
