Ive tried this bakery many times in hope of finding something really good. It just hasnt happened. I thought, "Mmm, cheese cake squares, only $1!" Theres a reason it was only one dollar. It was the worst thing Ive ever had. Not just the worst cheesecake, the worst thing Ive ever had. It was dry and it tasted like a mix of flour and detergent. I love custard filled donuts. Their custard is so bad. Its so thick, dry and flavorless, unlike the good pudding-like consistency of most places. I seriously believe that the only people who buy from this place, are old and stuck in their ways and havent tried any other bakery, or have just lost all their taste buds and cant tell the difference. Obviously the people who make this stuff have lost theirs too. I live right next to it and like to support local businesses. So, I tried again today. I got a snowball. [SIGH] They used a tiny little square of left-over red velvet cake that probably didnt sell, covered it in some cream filling and sprinkled coconut on it. Again, next to no taste. I swear they leave their products out for days or weeks even, until they sell. Which is probably why theyre so crappy. Just around the corner is T&T. Ive had all good experiences with their baked goods. But, their only issue is that at least one of the workers smoke and you can occasionally smell it. Granted, Dunkin isnt super fresh and they leave their stuff uncovered for everyone to sneeze on. But at least they get rid of what doesnt sell, every day. Its a shame that Puritan isnt there anymore. It was really good. If you want super high quality, both in the cleanliness of the building and the taste of the products, go to the Golden Crust on Mentor Ave in Mentor across from Mallys. They serve as a model for all other bakeries.

My family has been buying from Gartmans for three generations, and I can think of no other place Id rather go. First, I will admit that my experience is limited to their donuts and cakes. If you are looking for a review on other items...sorry, this isnt going to help. Their donuts are outstanding, especially the creme filled. Unlike Dunkin, Gartmans donuts taste fresh-baked, and are incredibly rich and filling. But the cakes are what keep us coming back. I would recommend the white cake with the white frosting...the chocolate is good, but nothing special. The white cakes with the white frosting, however, are a family favorite, and keep us driving from the other side of Lake county to buy for birthdays and special occasions. We even have relatives from out of state who, when they visit, hint at how wonderful it would be to have a Gartmans cake, and we have taken some with us as a surprise when we travel out of state. Their cake is great, it is inexpensive (especially compared to many of the tasteless grocery store bakery cakes), and is well worth the visit. And the smell of the store, when you step in, is beyond description...it smells like heaven.

They have wonderful cupcakes and the decorators will put on all types of flowers for you. The kids love to chose their own flavor and flower..perfect to put the candles into. Yummy cassata cakes with whipped cream frosting and decadent Bavarian creme with strawberries. Even better in June during the strawberry season. For a local bakery that you can special order from you cannot beat the quick curb side pick up and great yeast smells when you walk into the 100 year old bakery. They always have a hot cup of coffee and a cake doughnut to take the mid-day edge off of your hunger. Stop in and enjoy a part of local history.
