The Heath/Newark area has long been due for a teppanyaki restaurant, and when Kanji opened, it did not disappoint. (Teppanyaki is food prepared on a large grill that the customers are seated around -- think Benihana.) The food is good, the experience is good, and the prices are great. Ive eaten in teppanyaki restaurants all over the country -- from Imari in Waikaloa, Hawaii, to Sakura in Providence, Rhode Island -- Kanjis lunch menu has the best prices that Ive seen, and better quality than most. The lunch menu (10:30-2:30 weekdays, 11:30-3:00 weekends) has entrees ranging from $6.95 (vegetables) to $10.95 (filet mignon). All entrees include a salad, grilled vegetables (the vegetables entree has a larger portion), and steamed rice. There are also some more expensive "combination" entrees for $11.95 (steak and chicken) to $15.95 (shrimp and filet mignon) which include the aforementioned sides, plus a soft drink and orange sherbet dessert. The lunch "performance" by the chef includes a fireball and the "volcano onion" trick, and also usually some flying utensils and eggs. The dinner menu is more expensive -- entrees run from $11.50 (vegetables) to $25.50 (lobster). The sides are the same, with the addition of mushroom soup and a few shrimp; portions are larger. Combination entrees cost $18.50 (chicken and steak) to $25.95 (filet mignon and lobster). The dinner "performance" by the chef is fancier and longer than lunch. Kanji offers a decent selection of appetizers. Over several visits, weve tried the gyoza (Japanese pot-stickers), spring rolls, vegetable and shrimp tempura, and edamame (boiled soybeans). All were good. Kanji also offers a decent variety of sushi, lunchtime "bento boxes" (example: shrimp, miso soup, california roll, gyoza, vegetable, steamed rice, for $11.95), and udon noodles, but Ive not tried those yet.

2012 Review: What a difference a year makes! Server had very poor communication skills. The udon soup we ordered was awful (over cooked noodles, tempura shrimp in soup???, flavorless broth), the sushi was marginal at best and due to poor communication we were overcharged and it was just too much trouble to question it. For $91 meal I expect much better then that! Very disappointed and no manager available to discuss problem with. 2011 Review: Took my BF for sushi for her birthday. Waiter was very friendly but forgot to bring honey for the tea as requested and was more focused on the customers in the hibachi part of the restaurant. That being said, the sushi was very fresh and very good. The prices were a little high but not unreasonable for the quality. Looking forward to going for Endless Sushi night during the week!

I was there on 8/4/10 at 2:42 pm for lunch along with my nieces who wanted to try the place. None of us had ever tried a Jananese Restaurant. We were all very happy with the food, 2 got Hibachi Steak and 1 Hibachi Chicken. I was reluctant trying a Japanese Restaurant but the steak i had was done the way i like it, well, and the seasoning on it and vegetables were very tasty. I got white rice which was bland with nothing on it but next time will be sure to get fried rice. The salad was also very good. The chef was very pleasant without being overbearing. Price (lunch price) was $8.95 for the steak meal and $7.95 for the chicken meal, very reasonable for all we got.

Food is excellent choices are good though not numerous. Service is good and freindly. Long wait even when you have a reservation at evening times. Very noisey inside and can hardly hear your friends conversations. If there are more than four of you it is very difficult to speak to the rest of your party, because they are far away. Recommend no more than four people in your party. However the food is very good. I have had everything on the menu and was never disappointed. Also the tricks the chefs do while preparing your food are most entertaining . It is comically skilled cooking and my favorite thing about the meal.

If you go here during a slow hour, walk through the front (where a little cash register is) into the back bar area, otherwise you might not be seen. Pretty standard Japanese steakhouse food. The menu isnt huge, which in my opinion is a good thing. Its rather loud when they are busy, but thats to be expected with a Japanese steak house, and the chef performers are hilarious. There is a smaller room near the bar area that is quieter if you prefer. The waiters are super friendly, prompt, and deliver outstanding service. Pricing typical for a dine in restaurant ($$).

Used to be a favorite place to go for special occasions. Last time. Went with a family group of 14. Half were served and done before the other half was served. Didn’t get our order right, and no drink refills offered until meal was done. Managers excuse was we had a different chef than the other half of the group. Offered an apology, and a gift card to me, but nothing for the remaining 6 couples in the group who were all paying separately, but still there to celebrate with us as a family for a very special birthday. Dont plan on going back.

Wow. What a terrible service restaurant. Completely ignored when we walked in and had to wait for soneone to talk to us even though we said hi. Drinks took forever and 2 of them didnt come out till halfway through the meal. No excitement for the hibachi cook. I ordered sushi but dont think you can call it that. Go down the street to the Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse. Way better. Never again here.

When I went to Kanji, I was greeted by phenomenal service and great atmosphere, the resturant was clean and tidy, and my food was amazing. Their sushi (Even though I prefer cooked over raw) was some of the best, and the fried rice was just awesome! I suggest going to this fine establishment if you are a fan of Japanese cuisine!

Ive been all over the world and I can honestly say that their sushi is some of the best Ive had. The staff is always warm, welcoming and knows my entire family by name, even if its been a few months since weve been there. I would without hesitation recommend Kanji to anyone.

Very good dining experience.Service was great and chef Ricky was very nice and the food was awesome. We have only had one bad experience here with chef Johnny. But the owner and server was very nice and tried to fix the problem. I would highly recommend trying Kanji.

The fried rice is good as is the chicken, they dumped a bunch of sprouts on top which I hate. Ive never been in a Japanese restaurant that put sprouts on overything. We also ate tempura shrimp rolls that were very bland. Service was great though.

The service was fast. The food was amazing. We made prior reservations and got right in to sit down. There was a bit of a wait for people with out reservations. I really enjoyed the show. Hibachi is one of my favorite things to have.

This place is awesome! It is so much fun - not stuffy at all, just casual and laid back. The food is wonderfully prepared, the chefs are pleasant and full of humor and the price is right, especially the lunch menu.
