Im a huge fan of reading yelp review, but have been too lazy to write my own. Its time to give back! I had heard about Nuevo back when they first opened. I wanted to check it out, but was told by a friend that she had gotten sick after eating there which made me nervous. A lot of time has gone by and I was curious what other patrons thought of this place. I read a lot of positive reviews and decided that I would give it a try. My boyfriend, myself, and two friends visited Nuevo and I am very happy that we did. I read reviews about having to try the margarita flights and habanero jelly guacamole which sounded very odd, but at least five reviews said that it was a must have. SO GLAD I tried it. It was not what I expected at all. I thought that it would just be guacamole with some spices etc, mixed in to give it a little spice, but it was literally a jelly that was plopped in the middle of their house guac and it was DELICIOUS. So again, try it! The margarita flights are also a must have. When we first got to the restaurant it was a 45 minute wait to get a table on the patio since it was the main reason I wanted to check the restaurant out. I thought that we would have to stand forever at the bar or wait in a doorway, but they had these great outdoor couches surrounding a nice fire pit on the patio and the bartender came over to greet us and take drink orders as soon as we sat down. I didnt want to get the margarita flights until I got to our table, so I asked her what she suggested for a margarita and the blueberry sage that she brought me was delicious. My friend on the other hand chose her coconut margarita and hated it. i wasnt a fan either when I tried it. When we got to our table I order the hababero jelly guacamole and the margarita flight including mango, cucumber, and spicy jalapeno. Mango was my favorite and I just loved how different the jalapeno was. For dinner my boyfriend, my friend, and myself had the mahi tacos. They come out with the tortillas along side a plate of fish with slaw and rice and black beans on the side. The tacos were good, but I love spicy so they were a little blah. They were awesome after they gave me their habanero hot sauce which I will recommend if you like it hot. They also have a house hot sauce that was a little more mild, but good too. In the end I was really happy with my meal. I seem to have written a book....but I wanted to write a helpful review that I would have wanted to read. Check Nuevo out. it is nowhere near your regular Mexican restaurant.

I reserved a table weeks in advance, so I feel preparation should have been done already. The greeter was unprofessional and even standoffish. We really appreciated how hard our server worked for our small party, although I feel he was overwhelmed. As far as the food and drink goes... Margaritas are splendid, if a bit reaching. A flavor like spicy mango had me ready to try! It was okay, but nothing out of this world, especially not for $9 a glass. Queso/fundido was gritty, and while we had paid the extra $3 for chorizo, it was almost nonexistent. Chips are different, so I enjoyed those. Salsa was way too chunky and NOT from fresh tomatoes. When I say chunky I mean straight-from-the-can-stewed-tomatoes chunky. Guacamole is pretty good, though my husband makes better. Food... Inventive, sure, but flavorful? Not really. You cant be this posh and screw up the flavor. It has to Pop! I guess Akronites dont care much for flavor. Here I thought we might be coming up in the world. My advice? Stick with what you know. Nuevo doesnt cut it.

Disclaimer: I dont "gush" over much of anything. I dont "love" things. Im even-keeled to the point of being dull. I dont engage in hyperbole or overstatement. I dont know the owners. This was the best dining experience of our lives. By the end it got ridiculous because everything was THAT good. We sampled 6-8 items, drinks... it was all very fresh, balanced, thoughtful, and great. Clearly someone is giving a lot of thought to what Mexican-styled food is (and isnt). I can cook so generally I dont have to eat out; I can do as good or better at home. Not here. Its top-notch fare minus the pretense of gourmet dining and the crock pot approach of most Mexican-style restaurants. If nothing else, get the margarita sampler. Youll find your notions of the drink redefined. Then get something with their homemade ketchups (yes, plural). Drink, linger, nibble, drink more, then try to figure out how your bill was under $80 for that great of a meal.

Food was good, $40.00 for 2 people no drinks except water and a diet coke so its not your typical Mexican restaurant, not the best Mexican around but it was good, The service was so bad, I dont know if Id go back because of it. If I do I would refuse the same waitress. We never received a refill of drinks, we asked for a tequila menu and the waitress took 10 minutes to give that to us. Did I mention they wasnt busy? Anyways never came back to see if we wanted anything from menu or if our food was alright. We had to go to the bartender and ask for our bill because, well we didnt want to sit there all day. What appeared to be the manager was sitting at the bar talking to some one about advertising, never asked us if anything was ok and why we have not received our bill. She could have filled our drinks for us but instead of taking care of customers she had she was worried how to get new customers in.

They try way to hard to justify overpriced food. Ceviche had one chunk of fish with a couple of grape tomatoes cut in half and chives. There was some sort of lime sauce in it and it looked grey and slimy. This is not only nothing like the description (heirloom tomatoes....) or even close to any ceviche I have had and really didnt taste, look, or feel fresh. If this is a "twist" on traditional, they need to twist back. Service was friendly but the atmosphere was that of a college bar...not up-scale and not mexican at all. Paella for the main course and could not taste the saffron or any spice for that matter...all ingredients were mushy and it was like eating rice pudding as I could not make out any of the contents. Shrimp on top were obviously precooked and thawed in a microwave. This is a shame because the menu has so much potential but apparently they were not able to deliver.

If youre looking for typical Ohio version of Tex-Mex, this isnt it. This is some serious dining. The chef has obviously put a lot of thought and inspiration in his creations. We recently dined there and definitely will be back. I had the house salad, and found the chili buttermilk dressing to be yummy. My husband had the hearts of palm salad and declared the prickly pear vinaigrette dressing to be perfect for the salad. I had the carnitas (the roasted pork shoulder) that didnt require a knife to cut it was so tender- great Mexican spices. My husband had the papaya chicken tamales- hes very fussy about tamales and declared these to be exceptional. The service was as good as the food. And if you are into tequila, well . . . Reminds me of Santa Fe, NM or San Antonio, TX its that good.
