Thursday night, I show up to Frying Pan with seven others in my group a little before 6:00 PM. Im told itll be a 45-minute wait. I understand its a very popular place, so we settle in (some of us at the bar, some of us outside) and begin the waiting process. Their drinks were reasonably priced (although they had no beer on tap, just bottles), but we ended up waited a smidgeon over an hour. Hey, whatre you gonna do? :) Actually, they need to take reservations. Like, desperately. This was my second time going to the Frying Pan, and I had to wait quite a while the first time I went, as well. Its a trend in some of the finer restaurants to charge a reservation fee (for instance, $50 to hold your table, which would then be applied to your bill), and its a trend I really wish Frying Pan would adopt. At any rate, after a hour or so and a couple of drinks, we get seated. Our waitress came promptly and handled this group of eight very well, making recommendations and not batting an eye at substitutions. I ordered the popcorn shrimp and fish and my wife ordered an appetizer of sweet potato biscuits (which are INSANELY delicious) and the North Carolina flounder as her entree). Even though we were a group of eight, the food took, honestly, longer than it should have -- a little shy of an hour. There were two or three small mistakes in the orders, and my wife never received her order of sweet potato biscuits (luckily, one comes with just about everything you order). That being said, the meals were delicious. Frying Pan isnt perfect, but they do get a lot of things right. Bottom line: Would I recommend it? Yes. Yes, I would.

My shrimp PoBoy was amazing, very large portion of shrimp. The childrens meals and my husband wrap are wonderful and they enjoyed them. I cant say enough about the great sweet potato biscuits or the hush puppies and sweet cream butter. BUT, the filet mignon listed as "Two 4 oz. beef filet medallions with a burgundy wine reduction" were maybe a half inch think, and over cooked, not worth 26.99 at all, and when you have 6 children in your party you dont have time to send it back for a remake. My father ordered the Galley Combo - Fish, shrimp, oysters, bay scallops and crab cake $24.95, not that good, only 3 shrimp, 5 scallops each the size of your pinky, and the rest just blended together as fried food. With such a mixed review between our dishes I doubt we will be back, unless to order sweet potato biscuits. If you go, go with the cheap priced food, it seemed to be the best.

Expected a little more. The kids meals were great. We purchased the "safe haven" platters at $30 a piece. For that we got three regular size shrimp, two bacon wrapped scallops about the size of a Silverdollar a piece , green beans a crab cake and grouper or filet mignon. The scallops were chewy but the steak and crab cakes were great. The atmosphere was actually very nice the staff was also very attentive and nice. We spoke with the manager who apologize to us for our concerns (also very nice). We received two complimentary dessert which were fabulous. Compared to the other restaurants we have tried, this one came up short.

I had eaten here last year and it was really good. We returned this year and the only 3 good things a can say about it this time is the view, the service and the music. The food was tasteless and extremely over priced! I had the cheese ravioli just because I was tired of fish and it was gross, greezy, and did I mention it was $18.95 for 5 ravioli. Others in my party were not happy either. Extremly salty fish with awful coleslaw in a ramekin!!! And it was nasty it tasted old. Only 1 in our party was pleased with his meal. So not a total loss. But will not be returning.

Finally, HUSH PUPPIES!! They dont charge you for them and they are great. Best all around restaurant for me!! Price, service, atmosphere, scenery and selection. Price is as you would expect for around Oak Island. However, it is well worth the money. Wonderful waiter, he was personable and enjoyed his job. I mean come on.... Just go there. Fantastic open industrial feel with awesome scenery for everywhere. I would recommend possibly waiting a little longer for the window seats. Second to none food choices. Awesome shrimp and grits. Red potatoes are just right!

This place was amazing! We decided to sit at the bar to avoid the wait. Had a great view over the water. Bartender made some really good margaritas! He was very attentive too! They give you hush puppies right when you sit down. We were here for 4th of July, so very busy, but the food took no time! You can see the kitchen from the bar. You can tell they work efficiently. Shared the "Safe Haven" with my husband and got a little taste of everything, which was all really good! Highly recommend this place. Thank you!

Food was ok. Nothing to brag about and nothing there was enough to make us feel like we had to come back. Ive never ordered a steak at a restaurant and then asked for a knife, then be told, "We dont have steak knives, I can get you a regular butter knife"... We can go to Texas Raodhouse, Red Lobster or Darrells and get better food. Then came tha bill, holy hell. I seen tha bill, looked at my bride and little boy and said, "Never Again". Its a tourist attraction...thats all. We were so disappointed.

We make it a point to go to the Frying Pan every year. Sadly, this was the last time. We were told that our wait would be 45 min to 1 hour and that was fine - a very busy night in Southport. Things went very wrong when the hostess seated multiple parties of same/similar size in front of us then attempted some half hearted excuses for it. They could not give us an estimated time to be seated so we left. A case study in how poor service in the front of house can cost a restaurant dearly.

Great food, they actually seasoned their food. Most places down here dont when they say they do lol. Dont get me wrong some food only need a salt and I like it that way most times. Point Im making is that you get what you ask for. Anyways, our waitress ,Marie, I believe her name was a really sweet and smiled alot. She seemed like she really liked her job or was really good at pretending. We tried to leave a decent tip, I hope she got it. And it didnt go into a pot.
