Having just eaten there, I find all the positive reviews surprising and very hard to believe. Im not sure if all the reviews are from relatives of the owners or staff. I arrived with a group of 14 people to eat here based on the reviews. First, there are no seating arrangements for any group over 4, which is how many can fit in one of their booths. Minor inconvenience but not insurmountable. Looking back, I should have gotten the hint when I tried to order the beer special, and the waitress informed me they ran out of the beer special. We ordered our food and waited to be served. About 20 minutes later, the waitress informs me they are all out of corn on the cob so I order the peas. She comes back to tell me they are all out of peas. I ask for another side, but theyre out of that as well. Finally I ask what do they have, and she said they had pickled beets--no thanks. I asked for a dessert instead, and she told me they ran out of dessert at lunch. The same scenario played out with several other people in our group. Apparently the restaurant is unfamiliar with the concept of turning on the oven or stove to cook more food. Now I can see this happening if it was 10 pm on a Tue or Wed night, but this was at 7:30 pm on a Friday night. How in the heck do you run out of just about everything early on a Friday night? Another group of 12 people came into the restaurant about a half an hour after us, and the staff must have finally come clean that they didnt have much food because the group soon left. And the best treat of all was the waitress charged all of us full price even though we didnt get our full meal. The waitresses all had bad attitudes throughout the ordeal even though no one in our party expressed any anger or frustration with the waitresses. I do know Mecca lost 26 customers for any future business. Hope they come up with a new business model. To be fair, what food we did receive was decent--not great but not bad. With so many other dining options in downtown Raleigh, I wouldnt recommend wasting your time or money at Mecca.

Im not sure where the people who gave Mecca good reviews ate, but it must not have been the same restaurant that I had the misfortune to dine at today for lunch. The food was paltry, mediocre, and overpriced. My colleague ordered the scallops and received a grand total of 6 measly scallops for $14. My 5 scallops and one piece of trout was $17. In addition, the server was rude and inattentive. We had to flag her down to get our tiny Tea glasses refilled. I tried to order a water and was told that they had run out of glasses, even though the table beside of us were given drinks not 3 minutes later. Another colleague ordered the "homemade" lasagna, and discovered that part of it was ice cold. Overall, it was a terrible experience. I will not be making the trek back to Mecca in the future.

One of the oldest restaurants and diners in Raleigh NC, the Mecca has morphed into a more modern and hipster scene while retaining its antiqued charm. From the beautiful 30 neon sign up front to the carved wood booths and red stools, the Mecca reeks of old-school times. The menu reinforces that whole feel serving up Southern diner classics like burgers, steak, fried chicken and more. Grab a PBR, order up their classic cheeseburger and youll be a happy guy or girl. Love the way that the Mecca seems to understand that it needs to stick to what it does well but just needs to freshen up their service and interior to keep things rolling for the next generation!

I very much enjoyed this place for lunch. When I arrived it wasnt too busy, but I could tell it was about to be hoppin. I was greeted immediately with a friendly hello. Three employees were working at the time. Each one greeted me as they passed by. I was served coffee and water right away. Once we ordered, it was a quick turn around. I had the days special, trout with a side of turnip greens and coleslaw. The trout was cooked perfectly. The sides were equally good. The price was just right!! I will be returning most definitely. :)

Very slow, what restaurant brings the food one by one with 5 mins apart? We dont eat like that at home the point of 4 ppl sitting together having a meal is eat at the same time, waitress didnt care much never checked back very very slow and then food comes out cold. They could change the faces if you cant do customer service face to face and pretend you are happy to do it change your line of work deff not coming back, food is not good enough for a second visit and the service deff is the worse I ever had in my 4 years in nc

The "fresh" seafood is frozen (scallops and trout)... as is most whole cut meet (esp.. Pork, bring your own steak knife, its that tough). When the pan baked daily specials do not sell out, they are held over until the next week. Most vegetables arrive to your table from a can (except the collards). Tomatoes are almost never in season, even when they should be... The burgers are good (fresh), and the fried chicken is excellent due to love and preparation. .. The atmosphere is nostalgic, and the owners mean well.

Went last night at about 11pm. This place is a hole in the wall, and the food was lousy. Got the chicken sliders the meat was very dry as if it had been overcooked or sitting under a heat lamp for too long, & as a side it came with a very small portoin frys. We also got the pulled pork stuffed hush puppies, the bbq was not the best and the bbq sauce that came with them was horrible. I will not be going back and do not recommend this place for anyone looking good food

First the good. Their home made Apple Pie is mouth watering and their Service/Staff are very friendly and fast at what they do. I have only been here during lunch hours so the atmosphere is simple business like. Now the food is "eh". Lasagna was sort of cold and looked like it was a microwaved Food Lion version. Lunch prices are slightly cheaper than other dine in places around town. Overall the Service makes up for the bad. Id come back for the Apple Pies.

the staff listens to is the best, and the hospitality is first rate. I would like to find a place like The Mecca in every city where ever I go. I will definitely return. Oh and by the way, the waitstaff recommended Big Boss Brewing Co. Bad Penny Ale when I asked for a local dark brown ale. The Bad Penny was better than any beer Ive ever had from Texas, so far. Perfect dry finish, not at all bitter.

An old fashioned restaurant with a family-owned vibe. Its definitely a diner and the food is of the same type you would expect at a similar establishment. The menu is short, which in this case is a blessing. The staff is very friendly and the decor seems straight out of a movie. It wasnt until I paid that I noticed that they do have a full bar as well. Ill be returning to see how their drinks are.
