High Cotton is probably the most authentic Carolina BBQ on the OBX. We always make at least one stop here when we visit, sometimes several depending on where we are staying. They have great lunch and dinner plates and are also great for takeout catering if you have a large group. The sides are very good and feature most of the traditional southern sides you would expect. The bbq meats are the best part though, as you would expect. My wife always gets the ribs and loves them. They are more St. Louis style. I always go for the shredded pork or beef brisket. They are both excellent. If you like a heavier sauce go for the brisket. The vinegar sauce is very good and true to the area. If you really want an authentic taste, stick with a shredded pork sandwich and add some more vinegar sauce. Add some coleslaw, hush puppies, and a cheerwine and you might as well be in heaven. I will return often when in the area. One neat side note is that all of the employees had Ipad minis this year. They put all your orders in and accepted payment with them. Doesnt make much of a difference but was neat.

I am a BBQ connoisseur that has been smoking butts for almost ten years. I enjoy the contrast of different flavors of pork meat that the tar heel state has developed over the years. When I went to high cotton I was not quite sure what to expect but I was absolutely blown away. I was served the best pulled pork I ever had the pleasure to eat. The sauce's profile mixed with the tenderness and smoke notes of the meat made me want to thank the folks who prepared my plate. In a true Nc style, all the sides were great, and the hushpuppies were world class. The q at this establishment in my opinion is one of the best examples of Nc BBQ available in the state or in he world. It is not easy to make something so truly "nail on the head" as this meat was prepared. A big thanks to the staff at high cotton for treating us like family. All around an amazing find, an amazing value and I wish I could rate it ten stars!

We found this gem on Google maps and due to traffic from an event had to wait and drive around to get there. Definitely worth every minute of travel. The restaurant is in a nice mini strip with several other shops. It is clean and comfortable and everyone inviting. There is a take out side entrance with a gift shop. We were seated immediately and had drinks in minutes. The price are fair and the portions huge. We left with over half our food to go it was so much. The beef brisket and fried chicken were the best Ive ever had in my life. The pulled pork only second to my late mother in law. The wait staff was super nice. They pool tips. This is the greatest concept. We saw every server at least once as we were taken care of and never wanted for anything. I cant believe this is not more common at other restaurants. Do not go to Nags Head without going to eat here.

My daughter and I spent four days on the OBX and ended up eating here twice because it was so delicious. She is 15 and said the Texas beef brisket sandwich was the best BBQ she ever had--I didnt argue because it was delicious! The sides were also very good. We even bought 3 t-shirts to commemorate our visits there. More of us are taking a second trip to the OBX in a few weeks and I assure you, this restaurant is on our list of places to dine. Honestly, we are originally from Kansas City where BBQ is quite big and this is the best BBQ I have found in North Carolina. We live in the Triangle area now and I wish there was a High Cotton closer! I would be shocked if you didnt love it. :)

We went on May 15, 2010 on our first night despite what we had heard, but after driving 14 hours were starving. They were the only place that wasnt packed..shoulda been a sign...I thought the fried chicken was lack luster, my husband ordered a combo platter--no flavor...and we have had good bbq..the beans tasted like cambells out of the can...the only good thing we can say about it was one of their own bottled sauces was good & no wait on a Saturday night. Sorry High Cotton, but all the leftovers we took in order to not be rude went right in the trash when we got back to our house. NOT worth the money...after speaking w/ the locals during our 10 day stay they confirmed the same...YUCK.

This restaurant is AWESOME! The manager (owner?) is very nice and very friendly. The staff was very friendly, answered all of our questions about menu items, and was patient when we took a bit to order. The menu is very reasonably priced and you get a lot of food for your money. The wait staff is very "on the ball" when it comes to refills or asking if you need anything, and they are always smiling. Would absolutely, without question, definitively go back. Our daughter, who is a very picky eater and does not like BBQ food, absolutely enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. We highly recommend this restaurant as one of, if not the absolute best, of our vacation trip this year.

Talk about incredible outrageous great southern hospitality!! The owner greeted me, my wife our 5 boys. He personally went into the kitchen and came back with some delicious hush puppies for our hungry boys without us asking- before we even ordered. Thats 10 stars in my book. I ordered the pork and chicken plate... 2 minutes later the same owner slides a side of this incredible brisket next to me and says, "try this"... Are you kidding me. The brisket is melt in your mouth!! Its great to find a place where great food is matched by great customer service. I give this place 10 Stars! Incredible Mac n Cheese too!!

We stopped here today with our family of 9 and we were quickly accomodated with multiple friendly smiles. The food was amazing, we had everything on the menu between us all. The seasonal side of chicken and dumplings was a big winner. We have NEVER had better service, anywhere. My siblings and I have never agreed on anything, and we all agree this was favorite restaurant experience in not only the OBX, but ever. Thank you, who knew lunch could be so memorable? If you are ever in Maine, let us make you some lobster (it is hard to mess up, unlike your perfectly cooked and delicious BBQ)
