This is my absolute favorite restaurant in the Chapel Hill-Durham area. This Japanese restaurant offers several different dining options, including a bar and sushi bar area, regular tables, and a larger seating area where you can see the chefs prepare your meals right in front of you. Whether youre celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a good place to eat, youre sure to have a great time. Note: they do not take reservations, so the wait can be a tad long (30-45 min) during rush dinner hour. However, their dinner service is very prompt. During longer waits, my boyfriend and I like to pass the time getting drinks and sushi/appetizers in the bar area. I have tried several different things from the menu and have not been disappointed. Personally though, I prefer one of their hibachi dishes, which is their specialty. These dishes are larger, but theyre so good that Im happy I get to take some home as leftovers. Kanki also has a wide selection of sushi and fun cocktails, which can make for great appetizers for dinner or simply an enjoyable happy hour.

The last time we went to a Japaneese steakhouse my food was cold by the time I got a knife to cut my toddler smaller bits. We went for dinner here because, why not, we hadnt been yet. I was just trying to figure out how to get a knife to cut my steak into smaller bits for my toddler when the cook whacked the last 3 pieces into confetti and put them in a bowl in front of him... ditto on the shrimp. He was also very patient and warned my slightly jumpy 4yo before noise or fire once shed started ducking under the table to hide.... Well definitely come again assuming were not banned for my toddler carrying a spoon out the door. If I wanted to go to a "nice" restaurant and didnt have a sitter, this just went to the very top of my list....

Came as a family with kids hostess try to convince my wife to check the sushi menu when I told her she is pregnant she insisted its ok to eat vegetarian or cook sushi wen i asked if they separate the working surfaces from the uncooked fish she said no but its okay nothing will happen she said, then it took about 30 minutes for somebody knowledge that we are there and take adrink order. after additional 20 minutes we left kids couldnt take it anymore and were crying fromhunger I dont know how long it will take for somebody to actually take the order. Regardless to say Ill never go back there again since its not a family friendly place.

It doesnt really matter what Kanki you go to. They all are mediocre. You pay the same price with our without the show. I had a party of 5 and it was an hour wait at 8:30pm for the habachi or we could sit immediately at table seating. We were pretty hungry so we chose the table and our server didnt even bother to pass things out. She just layed the silverware on the table and said pass it around. Same thing with everything else brought to the table. Personally, I thought I was at a Japanese Golden Corral, but I sure didnt pay Golden Corral prices. If you like really big fish tanks, this is the place for you.

My husband and I were disappointed for many reasons. We went on a Friday night for the hibachi, the place was PACKED. We were seated at a table, they waited until our table was filled before they started taking our order. Well, in the meantime, 2 couples and a family were seated at the table next to us...somehow, the chef made there food first, THEN made ours. Our chef was not impressive or engaging. The food was okay- not bad, not great. Afterwards, they pretty much rushed to get us out of there to seat the next group of people. Awesome.

Very poor service. Our server couldnt get a drink to our table in less than 10 minutes. The glasses sat empty for what seemed like forever. The waitress brought out sushi to the wrong customer, then had the nerve to pick it up and deliver it to the correct guest. YOU DONT SIT FOOD IN FRONT OF SOMEONE FOR 5 MINUTES THEN COME TAKE IT AWAY TO DELIVER TO SOMEONE ELSE! I am extremely disappointed in this establishment. Dont waste your time here, proceed to the location at Crabtree. This is the second time with the same horrible service.

Culinary entertainment for all ages. We go to Kanki once every quarter or so for a date night or a family dinner. Most recently we took our 18-month old son and he had a good time and enjoyed the food. Our favorites are the Steak Kanki (ribeye) and the Filet Mignon. Wed also recommend the ginger dressing on the salad. For appetizers the edamame is just enough to tide you over until the show starts. Angel is one of our favorite chefs and we seem to either see him or have him cook for us on a regular basis without intending to.

My friend and I came in (late) for a dinner reservation before the Wednesday show of Something Rotten at DPAC. The host and our server were wonderful. The entire staff was very friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. We were made to feel welcome and happy from the moment we arrived right up to walking out the door as the host remembered my name when telling us goodnight. Our wine was brought to the table almost immediately after ordering it even though they were slammed. The food was SO tasty and arrived in a timely manner.

Best sushi in the triangle! Authentic Japanese sushi rolls with big fresh pieces of fish. Masa is the best sushi chef in the country for us, Jin is great too. We have come so many times that now they make the rolls with a few variations we love. Everyone is very nice and the restaurant is an adventure to visit. They have a huge fish tank in the middle and spacious sitting inside and outside. The sushi is so good that we never went into the steakhouse. Our favorite place in the area! Highly recommend it...

Kanki while a little expensive is worth the price to enjoy the show at the grill. This place is perfect for groups or dates. They have a nice variety of mixed drinks and the servers are the bar are great. The best part of Kanki is its split into 2, one is for groups going to the grill, the other is for a more traditional dining experience. If your not looking for a show and just want some excellent food you can self seat at one of the tables in the dining area and get the same great food.

I had sushi rolls for a light early diner. My tempura was cold, room temp and the rice was horrible. It tasted under cooked and was starchy. I had better at the Kanki in Crabtree. The decor is cool typical Kanki. The service was friendly and talkative, but had poor hygiene. They kept wiping their nose with their hand and thought nothing of it. Usually when you see this is a sign of poor management and not enforcing good food handling practices with the employees.

I love this place! It is a little more expensive but the food is always so good! I prefer to sit in the cafe? Area instead of at the grill table. I think the food tastes better over there as they use a garlic butter that the chefs at the grill dont use. Sitting at the grill tables is fun when you have a big group of people. When its someones birthday theyll bring out a yummy small cake and sing in Japanese!
