Pros: decor, service Cons: menu options, price, portion size "It was a date night, and I wanted to try something a bit different. Salmon is one of my favorite seafood items. I did take a vegetarian to a seafood restaurant, but in my defense, I called Upstream prior to my arrival and asked if they had vegetarian options." Details: My date ordered the Salad appetizer and I ordered the soup. It was fairly good, moving on to my entree, I of course ordered the Salmon. It was decently seasoned, couldve used a bit more. The disappointment to this meal was the side salad it came with. For a $30 meal, I dont want some cheap side salad. I wouldve much rather had “loaded vegetables” or something with substance. The salad was bland, didnt have much flavor, it was just topped with very few peppers. (if the salad had a mouthwatering taste, it wouldve made a world of difference.) and what if I ordered a salad for my app, would I still have to eat a second salad? Dessert: We ordered the Chocolate Sampler and the Creme Brulee. Cant go wrong with chocolate. The creme brulee however was another disappointment to this experience. When you eat a creme brulee you want the sugar on top to melt in your mouth and flow with the cream in the center. This did not. The sheet of sugar was burnt. Not sure if this was training night, but someone needs to brush up on their skills. Conclusion: I dont recommend this place, though it wasnt a terrible experience, it just didnt meet my expectations. Price and portion size doesnt fit based on my experience. One thing the chef did have was finesse. The plates looked professional and carefully developed.

I went to Upstream as part of Restaurant Week on Thursday January 29th. I thought it would be a great opportunity to check out the place since I have heard its a little pricey. As a participant in "Restaurant Week" you choose an appetizer from a list of 3 choices. I selected the fried oyster salad. The 3 oysters on the salad were covered with corn meal and fried until there was hardly any moisture on the inside. It was the absolute worst I have ever had anywhere. The entre I selected was mahi on shrimp fried rice. The rice was cold and the mahi was virtually flavorless. The dessert and drinks were good, though. Even though I complained about both the items and didnt eat the entre, they were both charged to my bill. My friend and I then went to McKormick and Schmick for their happy hour that began at 9:00. The food is far cheaper and much much better. I wont be going back to Upstream.

Long standing Charlotte favorite, with a mix of upscale ambiance with friendly down to earth service and artfully crafted culinary gems. The Carolina Brook Trout is juicy skin-on heart warmer on a bed of creamy grits. Oyster chowder is a little heavy, but delicious with each hearty spoonful. Sizable wine catalog and spirits list including Scotches and Whiskeys have kept Upstream on the map when much has changed in Phipps over the years. No complaints on food; service is down to earth but can be confusing with disappearing servers, order mixups, and right-food-wrong--table types of scenarios. Pacing between appetizer and entree is also off kilter, where our table waited for quite a bit of time long after our appetizers were finished. Overall great place for a high end, contemporary date night or group dinner in quiet South Park.

The food is excellent. The resturant staff are great, but if you opt to end the evening with a drink at the bar, make sure it is not near closing time. Why? Because, after spending $200 on dinner and you move to the bar for another $50 round of drinks for 2, if it is near closing time, the staff will start sliding the tables accross the floor and stacking the chairs for the cleaning crew! It is a complete melt down of a nice romantic, fun evening. Even more sad is the manager Mr "B" was asked why dont you let people know you are about to do this? He responded basically in a manner that indicated, you have been served ...and we want to go home because we have to be here again early in the morning! So enjoy the food, but leave the bar if you need another drink. There are more options in the same shopping area.

Great food but I was disappointed with the server the last time I went to the restaurant with my colleagues to send off my physician assistant who was leaving to go back to CA. The rude server wasnt able to ruin the morale of our evening as we shrugged it off and tried to laugh about it --- but it would have made a bittersweet evening much more pleasant to have had an upbeat and gracious server. We still tipped 20% because I waited tables through med school and know how that can be... but I figured Id leave this review to let the restaurant know.

Upstream has gone downstream. Here on my birthday with my hubby. Our waiter had a seriously slack attitude, and seemed to be nursing a major hangover. Most of the time we had no idea where he was and his timing to remove dishes or refill drinks was snail-like in delivery. Add to this the prime rib and roast turkey in the carving station were both dry and not served with au jus. Plus the mussels, clams and shrimp all smelled and tasted fishy. Spent $100 for brunch. It should have been a better experience. This will be our last visit.

No aroma in a restuarant is a bad sign. Heirloom tomato salad was a joke. Thin slices of tomatoes with no seasoning with vinigar dumped on. Was not Fresh. Scotland salmon was bland and served with skin up! All three deserts were one bite only. Pineapple upside down cake was a little debbie cupcake missing pineapple. Crumple had no fruit and the creme was pudding. What a waist of money.I will stay home and eat my wifes good home cooking.Too bad I took her out for this.

We went to Upstream for Queens Feast and had a fantastic time. The meal went by very quickly, but it was quite excellent. The service was prompt and the food was very well cooked. I had the best mahi here - so tender and juicy and the dish was cooked with a slightly sweet twist that complemented everything on the plate very well. I highly recommend doing reservations if you want to eat here during restaurant week.

Ordered two surf and turfs, muscles, and mochi. The surf was good but turf was under seasoned and one ended up under the medium we ordered. The muscles were just ok with none of the flavor staying on the muscles, I have had better at a Chinese buffet. The mochi was ok as the filling tasted generic, could have bought a pack from whole foods with better flavor and quantity.

Nice quaint spot...great for a couples night out...We got there 1/2 hour before closing and was still offered the entire menu without any rush or pressure because of the time. We sat in the bar area and was offered the same menu as if we were in the main dining ararea. Parking is ok. Food options were good although we only ordered starters...
