Transplanted Texans have been starved for good Mexican food in the High Country until Puerto Nuevo opened its doors this week. Its menu combines a variety of Tex-Mex options with Southern fried and grilled seafood platters. We tried two of their Mexican House Specialties, one beef, one shrimp -- both excellent flavors, large portions, and reasonable prices. Chips, hot sauces, and guacamole house-made, well-seasoned, and fresh. Good selection of Mexican beers and tequilas complement full bar. Service very personable and super-fast in a comfortable, clean, classy cantina setting. Great addition to our many fine High Country dining options.

We have been to Puerto Nuevo 3 times. It is great. What a nice addition to Banner Elk. Fun, sophisticated atmosphere and extremely friendly service. Nice party place for large groups and also nice place just to hang out. A nice compliment to our other restaurants in town. The margaritas are excellent... make sure you try their Top Shelf Margarita. The bartender knows what he is doing. Their food is good. Their chips, salsa and guacomole are super. We especially like their fish tacos and steak tacos. We are in the process of trying different items on their menu and it has been fun. See you there!!!

The restaurant is nice and clean. The service is great and the food is OK. My complaint is that what I was served as a Chile Rellano was a pile of bland ground beef with a half a poblano on top. It was covered in cheese and sauce and baked. Here is what a Chile Rellano really is.... A poblano or other mild pepper stuffed with melted cheese, such as queso Chihuahua or queso Oaxaca covered in an egg batter or simply corn masa flour and fried. The closet thing to a real Chile Rellano in this area is at Los Arcoiris in Pineola

My family has been coming here for a few years now and have always had a great experience. Food - Always been good. I personally love the quesadilla. Atmosphere - Family friendly and clean environment. Service - it has always been excellent. Very nice people here. Pricing - very fair pricing and in many cases on the lower end of prices. Especially for the great quality of food and service. Highly recommend and we will For sure be coming again and again.

We loved it. We ordered the $20 faijitas that has the shrimp, pork, steak, & chicken. They warn you on the menu that its enough for 2 people, but i swear it could feed 4. It was excellent. Plus the free chips came with TWO types of free dip. You get both fresh salsa and warm bean dip with a splash of queso. We also got the chicken tenders kids meal for our 2 year old and it was amazing, huge servings and seasoned wonderfully. Its our new place to eat in boone.

Awesome Awesome Awesome place!! Best Mexican food that I have ever had in NC. The chips they bring are light, homemade, and tasty. They even bring you two salsas, one regular red salsa full of herbs and spices, and one roasted tomatoes. The beer is always cold and the food and menu selection cant be beat. The atmosphere is also very nice with wooden timbers and high ceilings. I highly recommend this place!

Ill tell you, it a bit of a hike from us, and we do not eat Mexican that often, but the 3-4 times we have been here we found it outstanding. Great place for taking friends, or to party, excellent bar, beer and wine. They take great care, its pretty high-end Mexican but super reasonable prices. Very comfortable tables and chairs, and in season a bit of outdoor seating.

This place was recommended to us so we gave it a shot. I was thoroughly pleased with everything. The price was crazy for the amount of food you get. The food was GREAT, and the service was super fast and friendly. We come to this area once a year and this will now be a staple of our visit to the area!! Try this place you will not be disappointed!

I thought, after 10 years of going to the same mexican restaurant in Florida that I would never be able to find another to top it. Puerto Nuevo is hands down the best authentic mexican food I have ever had! While we stay in Banner Elk for 6 months at a time, we go for dinner at Puerto Nuevo at least twice a week... Love it! I HIGHLY recommend.

Great prices, proportions and staff! If you are passing through Banner Elk and are wanting Mexican food this is the place to visit. I could drink the queso by itself with out chips thats how yummy it was. On top of the awesome proportions, pricing, staff and tasty food the menu has endless options everyone in your party will be satisfied.

6/11/17 Researched this place.. and looked forward to a different and enjoyable experience. Indifferent staff at best.. (borderline rude). Weak high priced drinks. Food was a let down, typical American Mexican. Actually had to ask for hot sauce to give any spice (heat) to the food or even their salsas. Dont bother with this place.

We heard several glowing reviews and went for lunch - its true! This clearly the best Mexican restaurant in the NC High Country. Had the huevos rancheros and burro de la roqueta, both very flavorful and perfectly cooked. Hot enough, too. Well be back, and next time will try the margaritas.

This place has amazing Tex-Mex food! Frankly, there are not many choices in the area to eat, but this place would still survive even if there were. My favorite dish is the Chorripollo (Grilled chicken with sausage and cheese on top), comes with rice and tortillas.

Fantastic restaurant. The nicest Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. In an old historic building and they have dressed it up to a very, very nice place. Nice bar and lighting is great. The food is good and the organic margarita is #@%ing AMAZING.

Excellent Mexican cuisine with large portions at reasonable prices. Full bar selection. Friendly staff. Food comes out fast and piping hot. Must find the lady making fresh guacamole and purchase an inexpensive bowl with everything you want mixed in.

Every time we are in Banner Elk, we make it a point to eat here. The re-fried beans are Peruano, and unlike any re-frieds you have ever eaten. At dinner they will make your guacamole right at the table for absolute freshness. Delicious.

Food was sub par. But the service was awful! I ate my whole meal without a drink and the waiter walked off when my brother was mid sentence asking him for something. This was some of the worst service I have ever had!

Food was really good. Service was prompt. No wonder the locals recommend it. I had the ACP - Chicken. I had never had that before, but it was great. Spicy, savory, cheesy, and the chicken was juicy. Cant beat it.
