I was absolutely annoyed with the waitress. The Sushi was almost edible. She forgot to bring us the Wasabi and showed up half an hour later to check on us. I love Sushi and was introducing a friend to it and when I mentioned that to the waitress in passing, she did a great job of intimidating my friend, showing off her knowledge of Japanese Sushi names instead of actually describing to her what they contain. Finally I managed to take back control of the conversation just in time before my poor friend was about to start regretting wanting to try a new cuisine. I suggested her to try a few things that I was sure she would like, being my friend and all, but the waitress started contradicting me, saying my friend wouldnt like the squid, she should try something else. I had to try hard to shut her up and tell her to get us what we asked for. And guess what, my friend actually loved the squid. Lesson learnt - dont go to a Japanese restaurant with non-Japanese waiters / waitresses.

We have been dining at the Kampai for over 20 years. Richard and Debbie Matsushima have become very dear friends of ours. In all that time, we have NEVER had a bad meal! The food is delicious, the atmosphere is always homey and friendly, and the chefs are hilariously entertaining as they cook our meal for us at the hibachi grill. I have been to other Japanese restaurants, but they just cant compare with Kampai, mainly because they just dont have that relaxed friendly atmosphere, almost like Cheers!, where everybody knows your name. If youre ever there and come across a particularly raucous, rowdy table, that will be my family, cheering on our chef. Youre encouraged to cut loose and have fun. PS -- definitely try the green tea ice cream with the sweet bean topping. It is delicious! My favorite entree? The Chefs All-Inclusive. Its got a little bit of everything. Cant beat that!

Definitely not the place to go if youre used to authentic Japanese food. I did not see one Asian employee, and though Im not from the area and cant definitively say that there is any half decent sushi place within 20 miles of Binghamton, if youre accustomed to quality sushi at a reasonable price, I suggest you pass on this joint. I am a BU student from the suburbs of NYC and have worked at an authentic Japanese steakhouse with a sushi bar for two years. There is no reason to waste your money on this joke of a restaurant. Though Im not surprised that the place is even in business because of the severly uncultured environment that is western NY, I must say that I am an extremely qualified evaluator, and Kampai does not get a passing grade...

Great experience from the moment we walked in. Our hostess was friendly, knowledgeable and very accommodating. The chef at the sushi bar as well as the hibachi chef were very entertaining and kept the atmosphere fun and light. The food was soectacular- this is one of the only places I would trust eating the raw fish in the area. They will take a complementary photo if you would like. The homemade tofu was great. They had many options, although not very appropriate food for toddlers. Very quiet and relaxing meal. You are not rushed at all and can take time to enjoy the fresh food and authenticity of this venue. Easy to find and parking has never been an issue.

Ive been to multiple countries and have sampled fare from multiple ethnicities. Ive eaten in 1 and 2 Michelin Star restaurants in France and New York. Forget them, this is my favorite restaurant on the planet. I eat here once a week. I cant get enough of this place. From the traditional cuisine (you must try the Yaki Niku) to the hibachi (different from anywhere else) to the salad dressing, you will not be disappointed. Their Filet is to die for, and they have the best teriyaki sauce on the planet. 10/10.

The service was impeccable. The atmosphere was elegant and the hibachi chef skilled and entertaining. The sushi chef Andrew Matsushima was excellent. The owner, Richard Matsushima greeted us personally and checked on our table. The seaweed salad was crisp and flavorful. The sushi was fresh, and the hibachi cooked to perfect. The birthday certificate was an added bonus. Even without the discount, pricing is appropriate for this classy venue. Five stars, for perfection!

We go here at least twice a year, Ive only gone for the Hibachi, and on special occasions. They are expensive but the food is awesome, and the portions more than enough. My favorite is their soup, oooh yeah! Last time we were there we were sat with a couple that spent the whole time drinking and yelling, wasnt happy about that; normally they would seat us with other families which was appreciated. Totally worth it for a special occasions!!!

Ten years ago this place was consistent and amazingly good, prices were justified by the experience. Fast forward to 2017 and things change drastically. Tables are dirty, food is average at best and the prices are relative to ten years prior without the justification In expérience. If you want the cheapest chopsticks and hibachi in town come to kampais!

Food was average, small portions. Not very tasty. Chef was great and entertaining, made us origami which was fun. The wait staff was slow and it was very overpriced for the portion size. Experience wasnt the best. The only thing that made it great was the chef. Go to Fuji San down the road which is much cheaper, bigger portion and tastier food.

The Hibachi is cool the first time, Fuji san does the same thing for a bit cheaper. It all really depends on who your cook is and how talented they are... Sook (sp?) was our cook and he was very talented and entertaining. Sushi is great here, perhaps the best in town. Quite expensive, bring a coupon or cry about it.

Went in a party of 5 for Hibachi. Sat with 3 others at large cooking stations. Complete meals with multiple course. Chefs were funny and entertaining. All the food was great in cluding the dessert cocktail. Higher price for the area but great for special occasions. Did not eat in the dinning room; only had hibachi.

Fantastic place for food and entertainment. Have been coming here for 15 years for my birthday and many other occasions tions. Great food and service, be it hibachi, sushi or traditional. Highly recommend Kampai to anyone. Always look forward to it, my favorite restaurant in the area by far.

I had nigiri only so I cant comment on the hibachi. The fish was acceptable quality. Sliced properly. Sadly the sushi rice was much too hard. My nigiri was also served on a warm plate (a no-no). Service was decent. Sadly I was hoping there might be green tea ice cream, but no such luck.

The service is wonderful and my husband and I drive over an hour just to have some great sushi and fantastic cocktails. We love this place and go there try to make it up at least 3xs a month. The hibachi is also great fun. Our four year old loves to come here as well.

The best their is. We have been going to Kampai for years now, and although we currently live far away whenever we come to Vestal we cant resist eating at Kampai. Their sushi is the best, and the atmosphere very welcoming and friendly.
