The Avenue Diner is my go to spot in the Monroe Ave neighborhood for an amazing early morning breakfast. This restaurant used to be Gitsis, but changed its name over the last couple of years when there was a shooter that killed a person eating there. Have no fear though; The Avenue Diner is NOT open late nights because of this. Ironically, I was dining there with my pastor finalizing my confirmation into the Episcopalian Church, when we left just as the shooter was walking in. The inside of the restaurant is nothing glamourous, but you go for that home-town neighborhood feel with a decent meal. The quality is right on point for breakfast, which coincides with an extremely cheap pricing point. All the servers here I grew up with since I was younger, so its nice to come in, and get an update as to whats going on around the area. I love when I come in, they know what I want, and I get it served in less than 5 mins...NO JOKE. Its places like The Avenue Diner, where you can appreciate it more when everyone in your neighborhood is there hungover with you in the morning. Sometimes though, its tough to get out of there when there is always someone you know eating; hows that bacon treating you? The Breakfast Special- One FULLY loaded breakfast in the morning for 6 bucks!!! It consisted of 2 perfectly poached eggs with a LARGE piece of Canadian bacon. The English muffin underneath is always soft, because they generously put enough butter on to grill. The hollandaise sauce also passes the test, as it was rich and creamy, not broken. This meal gets bigger with an addition of home fries which are not my favorite, and taste bland in flavor. Billys Sunrise Triple French Toast- This is the ultimate hangover breakfast, and has saved me on MANY occasions. First of all youre getting 3 eggs, which are always done perfectly over-easy, and not brunt around the edges. The three pieces of bacon are perfectly grilled every-time, and they make them crispy which I like. The French toast is truly the winner as it is always fluffy in the center, and crispy around the edges. A bonus is that they give you 3 pieces of this French toast, making this a MEGA-MEAL. Oatmeal- This is the BEST oatmeal in the area, as it is only available before 11 AM Sat-Sun. This is your safe bet if youre watching your weight. The oatmeal is hearty, and thick in texture. They combine it with raisins and brown sugar. I like the real oats and you can tell they let the oatmeal get thick simmering all morning. Hence, this why it is only available in limited quantities. Overall: Amazing Cheap Breakfast in the Morning, Excellent Servers, The Breakfast Special, Billys Sunrise Triple French Toast, and Coffee....Of Course I Will Be Back.

UPDATE: THE OWNER CALLED ME PERSONALLY TO APOLOGIZE FOR HOW IT WAS HANDLED. HE IS A GOOD MAN- HE WAS VERY UPSET THAT THIS HAPPENED AND HAS FIXED THE PROBLEM. THANK YOU SPIRO Was there last night...a ROACH was crawling on my table by my food. The server (who was not a pleasant women- maybe on drugs) killed the roach with a napkin, did not get disinfectant after, or offer to move us, or discount our bill. In fact I told her I was not eating after i threw up- and she grabbed my food- dropped the check- and was off. I have called the owner, the health department, and posted this on every social media site. RUN from this place- worse restaurant experience I have EVER had...disgusting. $40 wasted

Absolutely friendly service and staff! I order to-go meals more than I probably should, but it is hard to do when the food is that delicious and convenient. If you are looking for just a simple delicious meal from their simple but sufficient menu, then you wont be disappointed. Their prices are reasonable, for a 12oz steak with home fries and eggs comes out to be $15 and some change. The parking lot is a little interesting to maneuver in and out of, especially if its crowded but there is street parking. Simple comfort food done right!

Had my car towed. I.parked there.knowing Id be eating there at th end of the night. Asked to.speak with the manager just to let him know.he.towed a frequent patrons farm nothing more, he refused to.speak to me. Not even.a "that sucks have a good night." Thats poor leadership. The servers asked me to.leave they had more balls than him, Ill applaud them for that.

Been coming here 6+ years when it was still gitisis. Always very pleasant and attentive staff. Food is always very good at a competitive price. Ignore the other reviews. The owner is always quick to resolve any issues. If you live in the Monroe areas you cant beat the close walking distance and welcoming atmosphere.

Ive been going here for a good 5 yrs and I have to say its pretty nice. The food isnt always spot on, but definitely hits the spot and those who work there have been there for a while, so if youre a regular, theyll know what you want. The waitresses actually have personality too! Ambers probably my favorite.

Very frequently the waiters and waitresses can be found texting behind the counter when your coffee mug is empty. Otherwise the food is good and the price is right. Not many healthy options though (fruit, yogurt, etc)

Absolutely disgusting. Do NOT even get a water in here. So gross. Unless you just shot a bag of heroin, you do not want to be in the horrible diner. Go drive 5 minutes far away from here.

This place is beyond horrible. TERRIBLE service from the waitresses to the person behind the cash register. I will never return and would advise anyone to stay away from this dump.

Great little corner diner. Good food, nice servers. Not usually as crowded as the other downtown diners on the weekend. Which is surprising. Easily in my top 3 Rochester Diners.

Food was good, waitresses were nice. Whats not to like?! Our group had breakfast, burgers and grilled sandwiches. We even stayed for dessert, a rarity for us.

Been going here for the last 10-15 years when it was Gitsis. Never had a problem, food is always good and comes out fairly quick, even when busy. 10/10

Corn beef & cabbage dinner on St. Pats was the best. Service, food was great and the food was served quick and hot.
