Time stood still at the National Hotel. I cant say exactly when it stopped, but it was sometime in between when restaurants started accepting credit cards and when bars started having TVs and restaurants started having Muzak. We ate in the bar area. Art, the bartender, will (if you give him a chance) tell you about his familys 200+ years in the area, about the history of the hotel, and about the 100+-year-old radiators he installed. Check out the cylindrical one by the entrance. You dont often find Old Overholt at a tavern, and he made me an excellent Manhattan with it. His wive, Violet, is the chef, and check out her "Chicken Violet". Theres a lot of Italian influence in the area, and many of the dishes here, as well as at nearby restaurants, have "French" in the name -- as in "Veal French" and "Chicken French". These are what we used to call Veal and Chicken "Francese" on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx: Veal or chicken with lemon, butter, maybe a bit of flour and white wine. Its excellent at the National Hotel. The Chicken Violet is Chicken French with the addition of artichoke hearts. All this in a homey atmosphere, where the other patrons, at least where we sat, were local folk chatting about their crops, their cattle and the weather, and were as welcoming as the staff.

Some of the best food I have ever had, And thats saying allot ( No offence MOM ) I have never had a bad meal there in 4yrs. i have been eating at this place Very good atmostphere and fine food. P.S. sorry for bad spelling. just me not food !
