Ive had the pleasure of growing up with some Filipinos here in NY metro. Ok, that is a huge understatement. I have more "titas” and "titos" than actual aunts and uncles, heard "ano ba, you need to eat...you are so skinny" enough times to make a lesser man feel insecure of his physical presence and spent some time at ABS-CBN during an impromptu visit to the Philippines. So when I saw a local BBQ spot opening up, my mind raced with possibilities of endless lumpia, pancit till I had to quit, diniguan over white rice(dont ask, just eat it if you get a chance) and another stab at balut(with a lot of San Miguel). This place does not appear to be where you go for that. I believe FOB is taking Filipino cuisine upscale a bit, or at least that is what the prices left me to believe. Figuring i would start with the basics, I ordered the BBQ sticks and pancit to go(see pic) totalling slightly under $17 and thats a problem. Ths was all to go The BBQ sticks(1 chicken/1 pork) came as they would at any other Filipino spot. In a bag with two barely sauced meat sticks. For $13, i expected a bit more in presentation, flavor, meat preperation(texture)...anything. The chicken was dry and overcooked and the pork was tough and grainy. Both lightly flavored with the same BBQ sauce. There was not a lot of sauce on meat, but what little there was did not taste better than something i can get for a lot less and in greater abundance(i love bbq) elsewhere. I am all for an elevated experience, but there was nothing here that tasted elevated and I hate to say was at best average to the bbq i have been lucky enough to have over the years. Th pancit canton had the texture and mouth feel of reheated Lo Mein. I did not see much in the way of celery, carrot or snow peas(as described on menu). Texture/feel comments aside the flavor was ok, but again cost/portion/value are not there. This was frustratingly disappointing. Ive seen/eaten foods that provided an elevated experience while still providing a great value. I felt cheated here.

This is a review of the even by Tasting Collective that we attended. It was a 8-course brunch, created especially for this event. I was very excited for this event, as I have never had Philippines cuisine before, especially an authentic kinds!!! Here at F.O.B., Philippines-born chef offers the dishes cooked at home on a Sunday afternoon, shared among family. The restaurant decor was all about warmth. Chefs told us that photos on the walls are of places that people enjoy doing BBQ, such as at the beach. But what I liked the most were the personal touches, such as family photos, mostly old, black and white photos, which were just adorable! The inside is not very large, but cozy and welcoming. They have simple furniture that reminds me of dining room furniture from a warm home. It was like walking into someone’s home, I really liked the atmosphere. At this event, we were offered: Corn Bibingka, Sisig, Champorado with Danggit, Talong, Picadillo, Tochino, Longanisa, and Halo Halo. We also got the side of Garlic Rice and Fried Egg. Everything was very tasty, interesting, comforting and delicious. Our waitress was really nice, friendly and attentive. I didn’t get her name, but she was great, and again, very skilled at mixing our Halo Halo for us! The chef had great personality, and I really like that he only serves what he enjoy eating. They opened just a couple of months ago, I am sure this warm, friendly restaurant will stay for a long time with great, tasty, authentic delicious food! Thank you Tasting Collective for having this great event at F.O.B.! Read my full review of this restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.

My boyfriend and I had a terrible experience here. I rarely post reviews but the story must be told. I really wanted to go to this place ever since it opened, very cute on the outside and prices were reasonable. Sunday night seemed perfect, we got there with a packed house and had a table for two opened. It started okay with our order taken pretty quickly but then turned nerve racking when our waiter came back ten minutes asking for the order. Then the food came... since we were new to the place we didnt know what the food would look like so we started eating... five minutes in the waiter runs over and says thats the wrong sides. So we say okay and remind him of the sides we ordered. He then takes the sides to another table ( which we started eating). So awkward! Then five minute later he says we got the wrong food entirely but that it would be compensated....okay. Then were waiting, we get some of our sides. Then he tells us the food cant be compensated because of his boss. At this point we just want to leave as soon as possible. We give them 20 bucks for some the correct food and leave. Look Ive been a waitress before and made mistakes, but this was really terrible and the fact that the manager didnt come over to apologies and deal with it, is even worse. This is not how to run a business, doubt this place will exist much longer with this type of service.

I really wanted to like this place...I really did. I absolutely love Filipino food. I always make it my business to try out every new Filipino restaurant in NYC. Alot of my childhood friends are Filipino so I was blessed enough to been able to taste real authentic Filpino food outside the Philippines. With that being said, the food here is, at best, okay...JUST okay.I was very underwhelmed to say the least. I started off with the peel & ate shrimp, filipino bbq and the pancit baton. Peel & ate shrimp: ($11) The portion was a bit small for the price as it only came with 4. The problem I had for this dish was that it was sitting in a very delicious sauce but I didnt taste the flavor when I peeled and bite into the shrimp. The sauce was delicious but I wish the shrimp tasted the same. pancit baton: This was the tastiest dish I had. It went wonderfully with my shrimp sauce. filipino bbq: It was tasty but I wish it was more grilled and not so tough. It almost seems as if it was grilled and then heated up. Im just so confused because this place got 4/5 stars and I think they deserve 3 at best. It really hurts my heart to right this but I just wasnt impressed. Now, the ambiance of the restaurant is super cute. I felt like I was having a family dinner in the islands with the bright blue paint on the walls.

What a great idea to open a Filipino place the neighborhood! While the flavor of most of the dishes were tried were good, we felt like the value for your dollars was out of whack. Four ribs with a small pile of pickled veggies seemed pricey for $16.00. The chicken adobo was very tasty, but was just two chicken thighs for $13.00 without any rice. Rice is quintessential to Filipino food so it seemed odd that it didnt come with the dish. The coconut wing sauce was delicious, but the wings were grilled so they werent crispy at all. They would have been a lot better fried or even double fried. Wed rather have the main courses that includes veggies and a carb, rather that just the item and be charged more for it. Two sides for 5.00 is not bad, the side dish of noodles is painfully small. Id rather be able to buy a proper sized dish of noodles. Filipino food is comforting, generous and more-ish. We felt that this was stingy and oddly portioned. We left wishing the menu was more in the style of Jeepney in the city.
