We go to Shumi once every 2 weeks. We get omakase on special occasions as it is expensive, but worth every penny. You can mix and match your favorites from omakase and have a great meal at an affodable price. Jack and Ike are awesome guys - very friendly and deserve the many dedicated customers they have. My suggestions: Sea Urchin hand roll with quail egg, white tuna, grilled octopus salad, udon tempora soup, Jacks chicken noodle soup (5-spice in it!), and really anything thats available there. Im amazed that they use homemade stocks for their soups (gelatinous and great).

There literally arent enough characters available for me to review this place. Ike knows what hes doing. Period. This place is not for people looking for Americanized sushi, but if you want real Japanese sushi and hot food, you will never beat this place. He has the freshest fish you can get on the east coast and all of the unusual and rare seafood. Absolutely delicious!!!!! I would give him ten stars if I could! Been going here for fifteen years and no one beats Ike at what he does!!

Shumi is a very unassuming place. Its located in an ugly commercial building, that even once you walk into, you have to walk down a fairly long, florescent-lit hallway to get to. However, rest assured, once you arrive, you will enjoy some of the best sushi that New Jersey has to offer. Everything a la carte that Ive tried is great. The fish is fresh and tasty. There is also a chefs selection omakase if you reserve a seat at the bar in advance.

If you can get to the bar (weekdays and lunch) youll enjoy some of the best sushi anywhere. Ike is a master. Expect to pay two-thirds of what youd pay in NYC, although the price of top-notch fish is now apparent. Try Ikes pizza and anything else he suggests. If youre patient and cordial, he will blow you away. Otherwise, all bets are off. The crowd around the bar is family. On good nights, their sake is your sake. once introduced.

For a hole-in-the-wall resturant, Shumi is one of the few restaurants that Ill give 5 stars to. The chirashi and ramen are always comforting and good, and the way the waitresses and Ike treats you when you walk in, you feel just like family. You dont get to go to these kind of places often anymore, and when you do, its such a delight.

Shumi serves the freshest, highest quality sushi you will find in the area, including NYC. The presentation is beautiful and the tastes are amazing. I have been going to Shumi regularly for 20 years and still get new dishes 2-3 times a year. The only problem with Shumi is that it spoils you for eating sushi anywhere else!!!

The best in the state that I am aware. If you want to experience Japanese cuisine in quality, variety and authenticity....you go to Shumi. But, be ready to pay for it especially ala carte or Omikase. Its not expensive, its worth it. Thank you Ike and Jack for so many memorable lunches and sharing your pride.

My wife and I ordered OMAKASE, My daughter ordered SUKIYAKI and Spicy Tuna roll. We also had Ankimo for appetizer. Everything was good. Service was OK. A bit pricey if I compare it with Josho 15 miles away. Yeah, I am talking about the same class Japanese Chef restaurant. Food quality was positively good.

A real shame. The place used to be great but service now nonexistent. After enjoying the place for many years, never going back. Made a reservation 1 week ahead. Sat at sushi bar for 40 minutes with no food and nary an acknowledgment from the sushi chef. Left to get dinner elsewhere.

Everything was excellent. I had the tempura udon. The broth was flavorful, the tempura was crisp and light. Also loved the gyoza...delicate, tasty, with a unique spicy sauce! The sushi was fresh, lovely, and no artificial color in the pickled ginger (a pet peeve of mine).

I dont know what everyone else is saying but I just visited and the woman taking our order did not tell us about any specials or even smile. The food was very heavy on the salt. Salad salty, teriyaki, salty, a better place is Sushiwa in PA or Yokohama in mt. Laurel, nj.

Went for my birthday with a party of ten. Everyone enjoyed their food. Fried rice was probably the best Ive ever tasted. I ordered the sushi/ sashimi for 2, everything was delicious. Shumai was great. No complaints, no exaggerations from the many great reviews Ive read.

Lovely place. The two sushi chefs, Ike and Jack, were wonderful! Monkfish liver sumomono is a must for appetizer. I havent been to a lot of Japanese restaurants in the surrounding area but I think this will be my regular spot for a long time.
