My husband & I ate at this restaurant last week on my birthday at the recommendation of friends. They forewarned us that they do not take reservations and we should be prepared to wait 1-1 1/2 hours. This was not a problem as the restaurant offered a great outdoor covered bar and deck as well as a comfortable bar inside to wait at. We chose the inside bar as it was a little chilly and very windy that night by the bay. While waiting at the bar, we decided to try the clams casino after seeing them served next to us. There were at least 6-7 good sized clams that were perfectly done with just enough bread crumbs and seasoning. We were having such a good time at the bar that we decided to stay there to have our dinner. Kathy, our bartender, was awesome! Our next course was a Caesar salad for me and a garden salad for my husband - both were ample and were included with dinner and very fresh! For dinner, we shared the broiled scallops and a 4lb. whole lobster - both were done to perfection! We were actually given a choice to have our lobster either boiled or broiled - we chose broiled and were very pleased with the outcome. We picked out our lobster from a tank in the entryway. It was here that we met the manager, Scott, who helped us pick it out. He was very friendly and checked on us a few times during our dinner to make sure everything was to our liking. He knew that it was my birthday from our initial conversation and he made sure it was special! We would highly recommend if you are ever in the area, do not miss the opportunity to eat here - you wont be disappointed. I know we will be back every chance we get! We dine out frequently and this was the best dining experiences we have had in a long time!

If I could give it 0 stars I would. I am not rating the food, because I never got the chance to even try it. We went there and was told about an 1 hr; 1 hr 20 min wait. Ok I was totally expecting that. Well 2.5 hrs go by and our timer goes off. So we go inside and theres about 50 ppl standing in fron of the check In stand. We try to make our way in the front but everyone is ignoring us, other people say their buzzer also went off but are waiting for the table to be cleared so we stand and wait. Meanwhile our buzzer goes off for a good 5-10 min while waiting for someone to help us. Then our buzzer stops blinking and about a minute later another person appears and we tell them our thing went off for about 5 minutes but no one sat us but now its not going off anymore. So she checks our name and says no sorry you have to wait more... I said what do you mean were already over and hour of our time and you buzzed us! She says, oh theyve been doing that all night. Funny I havent seen anyone elses go off that didnt get seated!! Not to mention while we were waiting about an hour into it, we saw an older couple park, then eat and leave and tell us... Oh we slipped he hostess $20 thats what you gotta do here. So a big fat f*** this place. Sorry excuse my language but I was very upset. Not to mention my husband tried calling to talk to a manager and no one called us back... I could care less about the wait but how the whole thing was handled was NOT right

food and waiter service is awesome! the only problem i have and its a big one is that they cater to the locals being seated first. Heard about this but didnt believe it until I experienced first hand two weeks ago. we were a party of eight. I went in to give the number of people they asked if all was here. I said they are parking they said i had to wait. Which is understandable as thats the policy at a lot of restaurants here in the Big Apple! well another party came in all chummy chummy with the hostess they were three people and said they have eight of them. Well the waitress said I got the table just for you. A nice round table in the main part of the dining room. Sat them right away even though the party was not all there. Well that was not going to go over well with this Yankee! i immediately said something and the one hostess whispered to her partner. All of a sudden we were seated but had to go all the way to the back. like i said food was awesome as always. The waitress very chatty and friendly with us. The hostess could use a lesson in etiquette. Plus i also called to make reservation and they said they dont take them. But I find pretty coincidental that large tables where setup and people just came in with parties of 8 and more. Also one person was sitting at a table of 15 and there party didnt come in till about 15 minutes after they sat! This Yankee will be back to eat and will be watching the hostess every time now!

We Love the Crab Trap, but THIS time, we went in the afternoon just to avoid being part of the evening throng, and unavoidable long wait. The food was Its usual high level, but the service was simply not good. A wedge salad came with no dressing, and the other appetizer, eventually served beautiful oysters on the 1/2 shell, were at that moment still entirely forgotten. The dressing was forgotten again, while the missing oysters were chased down. We got the "any minute now" twice from our server, who took our iced tea glasses to refill, but then disappeared with them until our entrees were eaten. I "enjoyed" my meal, drinking the melting ice from my gin&tonic which was also empty, but still there. There was no "everything OK?" check from our server once our entrees were served, so we never got to point out that one ordered side dish was not there, not to mention the iced teas. We are not difficult customers, we understand busy, and know we are not the only people in the place. However, when other parties seated near us have their drinks and cocktails refilled, their appetizers correctly presented, and their entrees served in a timely manner, and ours are not, we think The Crab Trap might not be our first choice next time. When the only explanation we get from our server is "things were a little hectic in the kitchen"; We feel like we might need to eat somewhere where our meal and enjoyment mean just a bit more.

Ive been going to the crab trap with my family for 10 years. I grew up eating Red Lobster which had steadily declined over the years. I remember the first time I ate at the Crab Trap I was blown away. The food was amazing and it was just a fun, celebratory experience. However, the last few years the food has really gone downhill. It is reminiscent of the decline at places like Red Lobster. My family and I ate at the Crab Trap several days ago. We waited TWO HOURS for a table as the place is packed. When we were finally seated it took another hour for us to get our food even though the restaurant was dying down by then. Large tables seated after us got their food before we did. Our crab legs and lobster were overcooked. The rest of the food was bland. Everything was drowning in butter. There was absolutely nothing about the food that warranted the high price we were charged. Once upon a time the Crab Trap was truly amazing but it is terrible now. Our family decided we would no longer go there but find a new restaurant to make memories in. I wouldnt recommend this restaurant anymore to anyone. I think people still remember how good it used to be and that is why folks still flock there. But really--the food is just not good.
