I got very excited when I came across this restaurant with five star rating thinking that I have found a gem. The sushi was mediocre, much like sushi youd find in Chinese take out restaurants. Maybe it was my bad luck that the fish was not fresh when I was there. Not only the fish did not taste fresh, it had a very bad after taste. Even the pickled ginger had a stale taste. UGH! The good news is we did not get sick! My husband and I both had maki and we ordered a Hibachi plate with Filet Mignon for our kids to share. The Hibachi plate consisted of cut up grilled filet, some rice and grilled veggies...for $27. I tasted the steak, nothing outstanding and for that price....not worth it at all. All in all, I just dont get the five stars given....my bill with two adults and two young kids came out to $122 including tips, Ive had better food for that amount. As for the restaurant decor and ambiance....its old and dingy and had a musty odor...like a goodwill store. The entrance and reception area was crowded with Avon catalogs and a display case of Avon products, I dont get that at all. I think I have said enough...thinking about it just depresses me.

UPDATED April 2016 - As of the last year the quality has really gone downhill. The size of the sushi, sashimi and special rolls has been cut in half with no reduction in price. When I brought it up I was told that is the way it has always been cut / made. When I showed them a piece of sashimi the size of a bottle cap that was so thin you could see through the chef finally admitted "maybe that one is a little small." The "special rolls" are the size of your normal roll yet exactly the same price as before. I left my old review (5stars) to show how much I loved this place. I have been going here for years but I will never go back EXPIRED - As all but one person has pointed out this is an amazing place for eat in or takeout sushi / Japanese cuisine. Prices are not the cheapest but the quality of food makes up for it. The people are always charming and the atmosphere is great. I have been about a dozen times either to eat in or takeout in the couple of years I have lived in the area, and am going again tonight.

From the outside, Umi doesnt look like much-- but the appearance is definitely deceiving! I went there with my sister and her boyfriend tonight for dinner, and it was fantastic. It was really easy to find, and there was plenty of parking. The minute we walked in, we were ensconced in classy Asian-inspired decor and soothed by authentic Japanese music. The wait staff was personable, professional, cheerful, and prompt, managing to be quick and attentive without hovering. Our waitress even brought us hot sandalwood-scented hand towels to complete the experience! The food was FANTASTIC-- the sushi was beautifully assembled and presented, the ingredients were fresh and flavorful-- its the best Ive had in a long time. The prices were great-- very affordable, and I loved that I could go to their website and view their menu before I went so I knew what to expect. After reading so many positive reviews, I definitely had high hopes for Umi, and it definitely lived up to them! I cant wait to go back!!

I lived in NYC for 10 years and had access to great, fresh sushi 24/7. Its hard to find a similar experience in S. Jersey other than going to Philly. Let me say that Umi is seriously a cut above the rest as far as S. Jersey is concerned. The staff is FAMILY! I cant stress how important this fact is. The previous owners of the building had a family restaurant called Peppinos and I was a huge fan. I am simply delighted that they handed over the house to another family as equally sweet, kind and courteous. Their sushi is always fresh. The presentation is impeccable. The staff is extremely attentive and respectful... if you want quiet and to be left alone, so be it. If you want to chat, theyre more than happy to engage. This establishment NEEDS TO BE SUPPORTED! This place cannot go to the wayside like so many other Japanese restaurants have in S. Jersey. Go see for yourself. Have a wonderful time. Tell your friends. And tip well... they surely deserve it! Enjoy!

So it seems my gf and I have been passing by so many small places around here without giving them a shot (I blame her) with tragic results because of all the times we could have supported said business. We were being awfully lazy but also craving sushi and Umi is only a couple of miles away and we were oh so happy we did. The godzilla roll and hot girl roll were fantastic while we had varying opinions on the fried rice. Initially she liked it but came to not since it was sticky rice and a bit sweet. It took me a bit to adjust but I enjoyed it and would get again. We only picked the food up so I cant really speak to the atmosphere but my gf said they were all friendly and a good sign was hearing the customers inside saying how fresh the fish was. We will most certainly be back again very soon.

Umi is by far one of the best sushi restaurants i have EVER been too! I have been eating sushi for awhile now and have tried it from all over the east coast in some of the top rated restaurants in Philly, NYC, and all the way down in Florida. This restaurants by far tops my list of favorites and I am so excited to say that it is right in my back yard! The most memorable part of this amazing restaurant is not their unparalleled food but their genuine friendly service, it is better then any place i have ever been too! So please any one looking for a fun night of delicious food and even better hosts visit Umi, I promise you will not be disappointed!

We love sushi and find it difficult to find a good, local spot that serve fresh sushi...until we stumbled into Umi. The owners are very nice and welcomes us from entry to exit...feels like home. They allow us to customize rolls and provide input to their purchase of saki or new saki they recommend as a result from other customers input. we are regulars here and the owners go out of their way to make sure our entire stay and meal are to our satisfaction. Highly recommended!

The sushi at UMI is, hands down, the best in the area! The texture, temperature, and freshness of the fish is perfect and that you should expect to receive each time you visit UMI. I have eaten here many times. At one point this summer, my girlfriend and I were going about 2x/week because it is so delicious and the service is very welcoming. Try the Sarah Special Roll - not on the menu; Scallop tempura, shrimp, cucumber topped with avocado and spicy mayonnaise.

Ive heard nothing but great things about Umi but Ive now been here twice and it was just okay. Ive been in the habit of getting seafood soup lately everywhere I go and this was my least favorite yet. I also ordered Amaebi sushi (sweet shrimp) and only got one piece when all other nigiri sushi is two pieces for the price so Im confused by that. The decor and atmosphere leaves a little to be desired as well. Anyway, based on my two visits, it was okay 3/5 stars.
