Im about to break it down REAL. Im a Cali transplant, thrilled to find La Esperanza after many disappointing Mexican meals in NJ. This place has 5 star potential, but its a solid 4. Food? Authentic, generous, mostly tasty and on point. Ive tried: fajitas, empenadas, quesadillas, giant fat steak burrito, nachoritas, taquitos, skinny margaritas, watermelon margaritas and guacamole. Fajitas, beef empanadas, chicken quesadilla and nachoritas get honorable mention for mexi-ecstasy. Taquitos were bland/dry. The giant fat steak burrito was ok, the steak in it was killer but too much rice and they didnt melt the cheese over top nor coat with enough red sauce to be on par. The table chips suck. Kind of stale and the salsa lacks chunk. Im saddened by the watermelon margarita. It was made with pucker. NOT fresh fruit. If they had fresh fruit ritas, I would pay a grip and camp out at the bar. The skinny margarita isnt awful, lots of lime and would be fixed with a splash of OJ to balance the lime. Hint hint to the bartenders. ;) As for the roach reviews... Guess what? Even the finest restaurants get roaches. I hate to break the news to you diners but its a part of restaurant life. I managed a 5 star fine dining restaurant in CA and we got them from time to time no matter how perfect and clean we were. You arent going to die and the health dept wouldnt allow them to operate if the situation wasnt addressed. Its not appealing to see one, but if you write them off for a roach siting, may as well not dine out anywhere because I am pretty certain most restaurants get insects. Sigh. The outside deck is small but quiet and good on a summer night. Bar is not very big so dont bother on weekend. Staff so far was friendly. The young male bartender is awesome. Great service from him. He said his mom made the dessert special so im guessing its a fam biz, even more reason to love. Festive decor and music, decently comfy seating. OK for large groups but not ideal. Great date spot.

My wife and I visited La Esperanza for lunch today and it was terrific. The food was excellent and the service was great. After reading a few reviews in advance, we knew that we needed to try the guacamole and it was really good. Served in a molcajete, it was fresh and tasty. For lunch, I went with a Carne Asada - I measure a good mexican restaurant based on this simple dish and La Esperanza passed with flying colors. My wife had the Mole Poblano and it was killer. Featuring hints of cinnamon, the mole sauce was the best weve had in a while and the bone-in chicken was tender and juicy. And it didnt hurt that they had a beer special at lunch featuring a bucket of 4 Modello Especials for $10. We will definitely put La Esperanza into our regular rotation from now on.

All I can say about this quaint restaurant is OMG!! If you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you will enjoy the food drink and atmosphere. The restaurant is family owed. When you are seated you are quickly given homemade tortillas and the best homemade salsa you have ever tasted. The food is delicious and the drinks divine. However if you are hungry make your reservations esp Friday and Saturday evenings. This restaurant gets packed. There is always a crowd and everyone enjoys themselves all you hear is chatter and laughter. It is casual dress I tend to over dress but that is me. I always leave with enough food for the next day. The owners and staff are wonderful. The prices are reasonable. Give it a try and prepare to be amazed.

They definitely do not know how to make a margarita nor did they seem to care about making the customer happy. They charge $2 extra if you ask them to not put any syrup in your drink when I complained about the extra $2 the manager basically said too bad. Very poor service. Food was decent. I would probably gone back on occasions since I love Mexican food and the are not a lot of decent choices but based on the poor service and I mean especially the poor management they lost my business. Hope you experience will be better. Just make sure you dont complain if they make your food or drink wrong

The margaritas are delicious! The guacamole was perfect. The staff is gracious and friendly. I had the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce. It was good, especially the sauce, but the chicken was a little dry, and I would have preferred less cheese on top. I know Americans love their cheese but it takes away from the authenticity of the dish. The enchiladas were overpowered and the cheese distracts from the flavor of the sauce. It could have been a brighter, better version without all the cheese. I should remember to request no cheese! My fault. I loved the music and the atmosphere.

Might pass for ok for people who have never had mexican food outside South Jersey (because it is uniquely awful in this area), but even that is a bit of a stretch. The meat was dried out, not flavorful, and tasted off. The rice was flavorless, the salsa was very bland with just a tiny bit of heat. The horchata was good and the Impossible Cake was really good but coupled with incredibly slow service, and that on a slow night, coupled with bad entrees that no one at the table enjoyed and mostly left uneaten, save your time and money and keep looking for real mexican.

Appetizer and dessert (pork tamale, coconut flan & fried plantains) were fantastic. The service was great, too - very fast, very friendly. Our entrees werent overly special - we both had pork enchiladas, me with rojas sauce and him with mole poblano. The mole was great, but I didnt like the rojas sauce. And mine had way too much lettuce and sour cream on top, so the cheese didnt really melt and I couldnt really get much flavor besides the rojas and lettuce. Well be going back, though - I just wont be getting enchiladas again.

My wife and I heard good reviews.Well not so great my 1st impression was a bit run down. The food for me was terrible we order soup it came out in a bowl with bone in chicken. The meat was un apealing to look at and bland.Service was average nothing bad or good. My meal was just not good in any way ,dry chicken rice was a little under cooked.Im a pretty non picky eater and i think this was the worst meal ive ever been served at a restaurant.Im not sure if we came in on a bad night or what but i wouldnt recommend this place at all.
