Ive been going to Tawara for about 15 years. I went there the other night and sat at the sushi bar. It was the worst dish Ive had there in all of my visits there. I ordered the sashimi deluxe and a few rolls. The waitress misheard my roll order...but what I got was good anyway. Sashimi....not so much. The people next to me received a plate that looked like a masterpiece; mine was mediocre at best. Is it something I said? No more radish.... and my too thick cut sashimi was tasteless.....especially the ika... old. They charged me $8.50 for two pieces of uni. That was just wrong!!! I was very disappointed and felt like my money wasnt as good as the peoples next to me.....or maybe the chef thought that because I was alone..... I didnt know what good sushi was. After being a loyal customer for years, Im not sure Ill go back.....because Gao is right across the street.

This unassuming place totally took me by surprise the first time I came in. First off, the sushi is beautiful to look at and delicious to indulge in. Simple, fresh and just YUMMY, they know what theyre doing. The chicken teriyaki is da bomb and pork donburi hits the spot, spicy beef and sautéed scallions served with mixed sautéed veggies placed on a sizzle platter make my mouth water but these are just some of my faves. Anyway, I went out of my way to rate this spot because the staff is friendly/hospitable and the food is so satisfying. Im a fan, keep it up and Ill sure keep returning. I love that they keep a slip by the entrance to let them know if they did a good job.

Hands down, one of my all-time favorite restaurants. Its family-owned, and its truly a traditional Japanese restaurant. Bergen County is full of restaurants that serve Japanese food, but very very few of them are run in the traditional Japanese style and use the traditional methods of food preparation. Tawara is the exception - you will be impressed. Beside all that, all of the food is top-notch. Sushi, udon, katsu, steak, and more. Wonderful rolls, excellent appetizers, a monthly specials menu, dedicated and friendly staff, excellent chefs, lovely decor, private seating... always a pleasure to be here!

Ive been going for the last ... well a long time now that I think about it! The place is just terrific. They seem to have almost no turnover in staff and over time they come to know you, what you like, etc. Its a good thing., I work in NY and I eat in the city a fair amount. I think that NY food is generally better than almost any other place but norther NJ is a very close second. Tawara, however, is as good as anything Ive had int the city. Great service, great food and good people - its a rare combination and its why I keep going, week after week.

A long-standing establishment known for churning out authentic Japanese comfort food! This has become a staple of our lunchtime rotation with well-executed comfort foods like donburi (rice bowls), ramen/udon soups, or sukiyaki. And if one was feeling adventurous, there are daily lunch specials that are as creative as they are delicious.

Food and service here are great! Nice selection of Japanese food here, way outside of "chicken teriyaki bento" (although there have that too!) Chicken katsu donburi, gyouza, ginger chicken, ramen, udon, plus seasonal monthly specials. My go to lunch spot. Try to get there a little before noon. After that it gets a little crowded.

Tawara is a great Japanese restaurant! I have tried a different dish for lunch each time I go and have yet to be disappointed. From Chicken Katsudon, to Ramen, Tempora Lunch Box and more, they always have delicious cuisine that fills me up and never hurts my wallet. Ideal place for lunch or to grab dinner with some friends.

The service here is wonderful, and the food is also very good. The sushi, especially, is quite fresh. Some days I wish that the seating were more open, but the way the booths are set up (as well as the private back rooms) does have a good feel to it, depending on my mood. If youve never been here before, try it out once.

Ive been eating here for over a decade, and I have only good things to say. Its my favorite restaurant in the area! Every part of the menu is equally amazing. Try the ramen, its one of their hidden gems...its the closest to authentic Japanese ramen Ive found in Bergen County.

This place is amazing. A must for sushi lovers. A little spot with an enormous selection of sushi. Everything was reasonably priced and food was out of this world. Staff was very friendly even when we were there a bit longer after they closed.

Amazing food with excellent service and a great atmosphere. Theyre also willing to accommodate and modify dishes for vegetarians and picky eaters. Would recommend going for things other than sushi though.

Good sushi is a dime a dozen these days. But where else can you find great Japanese comfort food dishes like chanpon, tsukemen, zousui, and chawanmushi? This place is the real deal!

This restaurant introduced Japanese food to the area back in the 80s and its still bringing its A-game. Try to score a tatami room for a party of 5+.

Worst sushi I ever had. Location we sat at was terrible conditions. Wasabi is not the way you make your sushi taste good.
