My wife and I have been traveling 45 minutes to eat here about once a month for three years. We have tried about 50 sushi places in the PA/DE/NJ areas and this is one of only two or three places we return to and easily our favorite. The food and atmosphere is very authentic, the service is great and the food comes out fast. The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. We have tried almost everything, a summary of the highlights follow. ==Appetizers== Agedashi Dofu - Lightly fried silken tofu in a rich broth. Easily the best appetizer on the menu, consistently fantastic. Miso Soup - Well-balanced flavor, good amount of fair-sized tofu. Shrimp Shumai - Steamed shrimp dumplings served with hot mustard. My wife is a big shumai fan and according to her, Sagamis are the best. The mustard works better than the sauce served at most other restaurants. Nasu Shigitaki - Pan roasted half eggplant topped with diced chicken in a miso sauce. Not bad, didnt do anything for me. Hamachi Kama - Broiled Hamachi cheek. Flavor was okay, wasnt as tender as I expected, wouldnt order again. Gyoza - Japanese Dumplings. These used to be pretty good, they changed the recipe recently and now they are lacking in flavor and the texture is not as good. ==Entrees== Yosenabe - Seafood soup served piping hot in a large cast-iron bowl. Lots of seafood, some of it over cooked, the vegetables didnt add much. The meat in the crab claws was difficult to extract which made it awkward to eat. The broth was seriously lacking in flavor which was disappointing. ==Sushi== The sushi ranges from good to great. The rice is always amazing, perfectly cooked and seasoned, fluffy, never sticky, mushy, dry. Very few places have rice that compares. The rolls are simple but typically very good, you can taste the subtle notes of the fresh fish, even in the spicy rolls. Chirashi - 10 or so types of seafood meticulously arranged atop of sushi rice in a very crowded bowl. Typically includes tuna, salmon, kani, steamed shrimp, octopus, uni, egg omelet, hamachi, and a couple of others. This seems to be a favorite amongst the devoted, I have tried it 2-3 times and didnt think it was as good as Ive had at other places. The uni wasnt overly fresh, the octopus was chewier than Ive had elsewhere, and I really dont like their omelet. The tuna is often sinewy and the salmon is not always melt-in-your-mouth. Sushi and Sashimi - As above, the tuna and salmon are sort of hit or miss as far as texture but always taste fresh. Hamachi is pretty consistently good, the unagi is done well. I dont care for the octopus, uni, or omelet here. Rolls - We usually get some variation of tuna and hamachi rolls, these are consistently very good. The tuna, spicy tuna, yellowtail & scallon, and yellowtail & avocado are our favorites. You can order any of these rolls spicy, cruncy, or both. The salmon/avocado and eel rolls are also good. ==Bottom Line== Overall consistently good, authentic, food at reasonable prices. Highly recommend the Agedashi Dofu, Shumai, and any of the Tuna or Hamachi rolls. Nigiri sushi and sashimi are fresh and tasty but some of our favorites are not as great here as we would like. 4 out of 5 stars because the tuna and salmon nigiri/sashimi arent the best and the octopus, uni, and omelet are rather disappointing.

I have been coming to Sagami for 24 years. I travel from Delaware County, PA to get there. My experience , has been consistently perfect! The , food, the staff, the Main Chef & his staff, friendly Amazing, AUTHENTIC ! The place feels like family to ours. Marlene is our first waitress we had when we went. She is fabulous , inviting & courteous. The other staff & all the same incredible Sushi Chefs IMPECCABLE! I cant say enough about our familys favorite place, anyone we have ever taken there loved it. I was a Newlywed when my Husband Joe and I first were invited by friends to go there. Now, 24 years later, had 4 Italian children RAISED on Sagami, they are so spoiled by Their Japanese cuisine, having California rolls with REAL LUMP CRABMEAT& not mysterious red & white imitation "crabmeat" the children , now adults , get when they go to any of the many Japanese Restaurants that are not nearly as Authentic as Sagami. When you as for sushi, the fish is a generous cut. Unlike the other places we experienced. Ive had some sushi at places where it looks like there is so much rice and the fish looks like it was cut like lunchmeat . Thanks for listening, to critique, for anyone who read my entire rant& rave, lol ( and no they didnt pay me to right this) ...Gotta go, cant be late . We are celebrating another birthday at Sagami tonight . * you really should call for reservations if you are on a time restraint. They definitely take walk-ins , but it is a very popular.

I went there for sushi last night with my wife. It was good sushi, but there wasnt anything exciting on the menu. Nothing that had a creative spark. I dont usually go nuts with crazy sushi rolls, but its nice to add 1 or 2 wacky, over-the-top, or just plain uncommon rolls to a medium-sized order. That said, it was one of the better sushi places Ive been to. Certainly the best one Ive been to in the area; though I havent gone to many round here. The restaurant itself is in a rather rough area. The building is blocky and uninspiring. The atmosphere is cozy and appropriate. Theres nothing trendy about the place. I suppose thats a good thing for some, and not-so-good for others. The place was busy on a Wednesday night, but tables were available. Service was a little slow, which I attribute to a possible backup at the hands of the sushi chefs - not an issue of neglectful staff. The servers were attentive, but not overbearing. I would eat here again without any hesitation; however, there was nothing specific here that I will crave. Edited to add: On re-reading my review, it sounds a bit harsh. The bottom line is that the restaurant sets out to serve up good, not-flashy Japanese food. Theyve been in business forever and arent chasing some craze. They excel at what they do. Its up to you to decide if thats what you want.

For sushi, this is the best sushi place I have ever been to - and the number of sushi places I have ever been to include high-profile and well-respected sushi places in New York. The fish is always the freshest and of the highest quality. Every time I am there, the rolls melt in my mouth. HOWEVER, Sagami only does authentic, basic rolls in a traditional style with little flare. They do not do crazy fancy rolls with fancy names (nothing more specialized than a dragon or spider roll) or a variety of other dishes - so if you are looking for great cuisine, try somewhere else. All that being said, I still give this place FIVE STARS. If you are in the mood for sushi (and you have a reservation on a Friday or Saturday night), dont go anywhere else!

I have been to this place so many times but I never get tired of it! Its as authentic as you can get. If you prefer fancy rolls or cooked sushi (Im judging you), this probably wont be that great for you. They stick with simple rolls and the freshest variety of fish you can get around this area. I always get the chirashi bowl without squid or octopus (not a fan of the texture or chewiness) - if you are not sure what you like, this is a great option since you get a variety of fish. I tried the tuna donburi last night and loved it! If you like mushrooms, there is a enoki mushroom soup that is just perfect. It is a wait for the sushi but be patient... its all worth it!
