A bunch of us used to come in here after our Tuesday night rides. It was a great place because those who wanted beer could get it; those who just wanted coffee could do that. Those who wanted dinner could order it but those who wanted a croissant or muffin were set too. It was a casual café with a bit of a dinner menu and some beer. But this year we saw them becoming increasingly hostile to those of us who come in at night and dont expect to order a fancy dinner. They informed us that the regular café baked goods werent available one time (even though the counter was full of them) because it was night; they put candles on the tables and lowered the lights. But its still order at the counter, with runners taking food out when it comes up. So its like they want to keep the café model while charging upscale prices for fancy dinner and pushing out the café patrons. I imagine they must be openly hostile to the coffee-and-internet crowd at night now. Too bad, it was a nice place. Their food is good but theres dozens of places serving high-end food with pretentious attitude in Uptown, I think theyre missing their niche.

Common Roots is located close to the beatnik district of Uptown Minneapolis. Right on the corner across the street from the Bulldog and down the block from Herkimer. Nice open seating area with cement and stone walls. Number of tables in the front and along the side of the kitchen. Didnt go out to it but there is a nice little patio on the side in the packing lot (on-site parking is nice in this area so points for that). Menu is small but has some nice stuff. From what I hear they bagels in the morning and coffee are great. I had a chicken sammich of some sort and it was good stuff. 4 beers on tap. 2 Surly offerings, 1 Flat Earth, and 1 Lakefront. Self serve at the counter only and bus your own dishes (although the staff came around a number of times and grabbed our empty tasting glasses away as we were down there for free cask Surly). Free wi-fi so bring your laptop and get some work done while your there. Nice laid back place to enjoy some food and a brew. Relaxed coffee house feel to it.

We did not enjoy our experience here. The kitchen grilled our sandwich rather than toasting as we had asked for and it was soggy. I sat at our table for 10 minutes waiting for the sandwich to be remade. My partners food was growing cold. I told him to go ahead and eat his food and I would check on my foods progress. When I peered into the kitchen I saw that they had not even started remaking my sandwich and were still pulling tickets to work on that had just been put up. I complained to the person who was behind the counter and appeared to be in charge and he did not accept any responsibility for what was going on or even find it concerning that they were not replacing my sandwich in a timely manner. By the time I got back with my sandwich my partner had finished his sandwich and it really didnt matter anyway because after looking into the kitchen at the sloppy looking cooks and dirty looking kitchen I had no appetite for the sandwich anyway. We will never go back - it was awful.

Hip lil vegetarian friendly joint for the uptown crowd... ya mans went there with my vego friend n she seemed to kinda like it. I dropped 11 clams on a burger and you know when I get into the double digit range I got high expectations. It arrived quick but without fries. The burger itself was merely alright... had this really hot mustard on it... chili on it was nice but it wasnt bomb chili... A fella could practically get two Jucy Lucies for that. Could go across the street to the Bulldog and get somethin way meaner with fries for less coin than that. Maybe its my mistake for gettin a burger rather than a kale veganaise quinoa artichoke panini or some bulsh. Had me unsatisfied as a mawficka. I mean the burger was indeed good. It just wudnt 11 clams good. Hell the CC across the street satisfies ya boi more. This just aint my style but thats k. Cute indie girls will love it

I love the food at this place. I dont honestly think that the price is too expensive for what you get. I have been in there many times for breakfast as well as lunch, on the weekends as well as on the weekdays, and I have to say the atmosphere is terrible. If you like to sit and eat while every single other table is occupied by one or two people on their laptops then this is the place for you. This is my major gripe about the place. For the most part the service is pretty good, some days you have someone behind the counter thats grumpy and barely looks you in the eyes, others days they smile greet you warmly and answer your questions without too much grumble. I will continue to dine here, but if the people that make the recipes for this place opened up somewhere to eat and NOT a place to hang out with your laptop all day, I would never see a reason to go back.

I love the focus of the local spending this place does and they also have an awesome catering shop that Ive been able to check out at some heavy table events. While in recent years I feel like theyve moved away from their adventurous menus, perhaps, since Im a regular customer Ive become unadventurous when eating there but the food quality has remained top notch. Common Roots is the best place to grab a coffee & scone (or other baked goodie) and it also is a great place for breakfast and lunch. Some of the best one off dinner specials have been here. They have plenty of Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten Free options for anyone looking in those areas.

This is a walk-up counter where you order baked goods or from the breakfast menu. Very limited selection for breakfast. Nothing on tables - need to keep getting up and down for salt and pepper, cream, sugar; had to go back and ask for butter for the toast; no artificial sugar (one member of our party was diabetic and had ordered oatmeal). Coffee refills are 50 cents. I ordered the scrambled egg plate - it was barely 2 thinly scrambled eggs, about 8 little cut up pieces of potato, and 1 piece of toast; and tea. A poor value for a $10 breakfast.

I ordered a bagel to go and they brought it to me on a plate. When I kindly told them that I ordered it to go they disputed me. I asked for a manager and the manager was equally combative. I was kind and polite through the entire exchange. They were dismissive, forgetful, miffed, and combative through the entire ordeal. They finally wrapped my bagel but never admitted to being wrong about my original order. It takes no more than a kindergarten education to remember an order. Apparently Im in the wrong according to Common Roots.

Nice local coffee shop with beer + food. It was a great place to have dinner, I was happy with the service and the food. I thought we were taken care of nicely. For the portions and the food itself, I felt it was overpriced... there were plenty of people in there just having a couple of beers or just sitting on the wifi with their laptops. Definitely a mix of people; Id go back and eat here again, but I wouldnt go out of my way to eat here... definitely seems to be a place to kill some time based on the relaxed atmosphere.
