We waited about 15 mins for a table which isnt bad except that the group ahead of us didnt put their name on their list. The hostess didnt notice and was only seating groups whose name was on her list. Our group noticed this and when our name was called we explained the situation and told her to seat them instead. Well seconds later she called the party after us and sat them ahead of all of us! Then when we finally were seated, all tables were taken, we put in our drink order, got two cinnamon rolls (delicious) put in our order and waited, waited, waited! We asked for more water 3xs and waited some more! After 45 minutes we asked the waitress what was going on. All of our 4 orders were eggs. She told us that they have a little kitchen like it was our fault. We looked around at the 8 tables and no one had food aside from cinnamon rolls and drinks. We asked the waitress how much longer? She said your order is next even though the 3 tables ahead of us didnt have their food yet! We paid for what we ate and left! We will never be back! They either need to seat less people or expand their kitchen and staff to accommodate their patrons. With all the great breakfast places in town we had many other choices to choose from. Which we did!

Ive heard this place was overrated. I dont know who I heard that from, but they could not have been more wrong. We had their French 75 and a Mule, then their wings, pickle plate, and shared their slow-roasted pork with mashed potatoes and pullman toast. The pickled ramps and strawberries were incredible when we ate them with the pullman toast and the accompanying rhubarb jam. They recently received their Snail of Approval from Slow Food, and I can easily see why- each dish paid attention to the ingredients and played to their strengths. When the bill came, we did a double-take at how affordable it was. I do a lot of slow roasting, pickling, and curing at home and know how much time and love goes into every bit. Cant say enough about this place. The only thing I would say is that the greeting and bar area were a little hectic and confusing for a first-timer. We had to wait for a bit for a drink, but our server made up for the busy bartender and host staff. We will be coming back and we will be letting people know how great it was.

We came here after reading the reviews and looked forward to a tasty, relaxing experience. Food choices were interesting. I wasnt blown away with everything...the fried chicken and pork were delicious. Many things had a peppery taste to them. Mason jars for water were very dirty around the rims. Our server was friendly and efficient but food took a very long time to arrive given it wasnt busy, but steady. Drink menus were too "hipster" for me. No desserts offered. For being a southern place, I would recommend cobblers, pies, custards, etc. If you like fried chicken and Mac n cheese to split, come here. (They only have one size of Mac n cheese).

This place was unbelievable. I had the fried chicken with grits and greens. The greens were not my favorite, I did not care for the miso potlikker, but the fried chicken and grits were the best I have ever tasted in my life. Every piece of chicken was cooked to perfection. I cannot find the words to explain how good it was. We came for brunch and naturally sampled quite a few of their drinks. The Bloody Mary was also one of the best I have ever had, and the frozen drinks were great for the hot morning/afternoon. Our server and the rest of the staff were easy going and very friendly. I cant wait to come back to this restaurant.

My husband and I came here for breakfast after attending a wedding in South Haven. As a Texan, he was excited to order the honey butter chicken biscuit - the biscuit was delicious and clearly homemade and the chicken was perfect. Reminded him of his southern childhood. I, a pure Michigander, got two eggs over medium with a side of grits. My eggs were cooked perfectly and the grits were creamy, warm, and hearty. We also loves their coffee, from the local coffee roasters, Uncommon. We cant wait to find an excuse to come back!

A friend of mine goes to Saugatuck semi-regularly during the summer season. He loves this restaurant (and trust me, his standards are incredibly high for service and quality of food). My friend brought a quail dinner home to surprise us and it was DELICIOUS! Generously portioned with 3 whole birds and sides of grits and veggies, the quail meat was moist, tender, and deeply flavorful. Mmmmm. Service is excellent, according to my friend, who makes The Southerner a requisite stop every weekend that they visit Saugatuck.

My brother and I stopped there about 3 weeks ago to check it out for a larger gathering of my siblings. We found the ribs to be over cooked and dried out, almost not eatable. The side of beans tasted out of a can, not the kind of beans your use to with this kind of food. The sausage was very good as was the mashed potatoes. Bread was old and dry. We feel we may have just caught them on a off night. The six of us plan on going back this Sat. 8-15 for a second chance. I am hoping for a better experience. Les Dykema

Incredible food made exactly the way that food should be made -- carefully, skillfully, and with great ingredients. The Southerner is easily one of the finest restaurants in West Michigan, and every item on the menu is a success -- I know, because during my first visit I ordered practically everything on the menu, and it was all amazing... the grits, the hot chicken, the beans, the biscuits, the sweet tea, the coffee, the biscuit sandwiches, the homemade pickles... Im going back as soon as I can.

Ordered the special... Short Ribs with biscuit and greens as sides. Also quail with mashed potatoes and biscuit. Ribs lived up to expectations... Melt in your mouth meatiness. First experience of quail ever... richly flavorful. The sides.. Since all were outstanding, none stands alone. We can also vouch for the pork rinds (warm, puffy, crunchy spice), pepper jelly and raspberry apple crisp. Yes, we even managed dessert. The service was excellent as well. Comfort food extradinaire.

We went to this restaurant at 4:00pm, 04-23-16. We like to try out places we havent been to within 50 miles of us. The quality was good but not anything special. The biscuit was the kind that come out of a can. The servings were quite small; not much more than an appetizer. The food was very much overpriced, especially considering small servings. We have eaten at many southern style restaurants in the south and some in Michigan. This is not a southern style restaurant.

Went to The Southerner for a Friday date night. Excellent choice. Great atmosphere fun for everyone! Menu is cool! Mac n Cheese is outstanding, fried chicken Tennessee Hot is so good. The server made it sound a lot hotter than it is but, it is darn hot if that is not your thing. Try as many sides as you can. You cannot go wrong with any off them. Go to The Southerner if you appreciate good food, drinks, and atmosphere. If you do not like it you are doing it wrong. =P
