I ended up at Stillwater Grill on an interesting night. Every year, the Michigan State University football team plays a spring football game called the Green and White game. Each sides drafts players and they play against each other. They also draft local media members to each side. The winners get steaks. The losers get beans. A friend of mine who anchors sports at one of the Lansing TV stations invited me along to meet a friend of his. SInce I wasnt part of the bet, I ordered of the menu. My friend was on the losing team and had a meal of baked beans. He also ordered the hot spinach artichoke dip to go along with his beans. The dip comes seved on a platter of tortilla chips. Its a pretty large portion and he tore through it like it was going out of style. He mentioned to one of the other guys sitting at our table that he really liked it when one of the other guys was eating theirs. I went simple and just got the Stillwater Burger. I forgot to say "cheese" so it was my fault, but the burger was pretty good without it. It was a fresh angus beef patty served medium with a side of seasoned fries. The burger was actually more on the medium rare side than medium. That doesnt bother me because I actually think theres more flavor if the burger is a little pink, but most people are so paranoid about beef they probably would have sent it back. The fries were really salty. Almost too salty, but they were fresh cut fries and they were really crispy. For dessert, they brought out a piece of cheesecake. The other guys at the table were at desert while we were eating dinner and they were all salivating over the cheesecake, so theres no way we could turn it down. The cake met the hype. It was really good. Probably the best since the cheesecake I had at Jimmys on the Park in St. Louis (review here) The atmosphere at Stillwater was a "somewhere between Applebees and a shirt and tie place" (my friends words). Theres a nice big horseshoe bar to the right when you walk in and a large dining left. The kitchen is semi open as there are windows so you can see into the prep area, but they are high enough you cant really see what the line cooks are doing. Another interesting feature is the ceramic giraffe that has a permanent seat at the bar. My dinner and two pieces of cheesecake ran right around $20. The rest of the menu at Stillwater looks good and worth a second trip to try out one of their entrees.

My boyfriend and I first went to Stillwater back in July for our anniversary. We got the pick 2 and got scallops. They were some of the best scallops Ive ever had. Then the other day we went back and we ordered the same thing and when they brought the scallops out they were completely different and had a different sauce. I asked our waitress what happened to the old ones she said she was new so she asked the cook who had been there 15 years and acted like I didnt know what I was talking about. Then I spoke to the manager and he to made me feel like a liar like they never had scallops like I was describing with a white sauce. Luckily I took a picture of my meal and showed the manager he then acted like he knew what I was talking about. Both the manager and the cook made me feel like I was a liar. They said they were under new management and owners and they changed some things around in July but we came back in August. And by the time they made my scallops the way they were before the rest of my food was gone and my boyfriend had finished his food. My boyfriend and I will not be back and are very unhappy. The manager with the beard is horrible.

Drinks are a sham!!!Ordered Knob Creek Bourbon neat, wife had Bulleit Old Fashioned and friend had Bulleit and coke. After dinner and two rounds of drinks the bill came. And thats when it went bad. All the drinks were around $9.00 each which is a bit high for those bourbons, but the surprise was a $4.00 upcharge on every drink. Making them $13.00 each!!!. Of course I ask why the $4.00 upcharge they said that they charge extra for drinks ordered neat, on the rocks or mixed!!! They claim that when they make them that way they pour extra. I have never heard of anything like that!!! If they upcharge for just pouring it in a glass, adding ice or in a mixed drink what would qualify as a standard order?? What a joke, I have never heard of any BS excuse like that!! Never going to see me there again and I will make sure I let everyone I can know about this. By the way I have never left a review or a restaurant before, but this was crazy.

Very disappointed. Long time loyal customers; but will not be returning. The only bright spot was the pleasant professional server. Corporation that bought out these quality locations have ruined Stillwater Grill. This has been our choice for special occasions many times. Prices up and that would be acceptable if the recipes (preparation, presentation and flavor) remained high quality. Example of the decline, smaller portions, risotto previously served as a bed under high quality grilled salmon is now a tapioca filler ice cream scoop of goo next to a tasteless farm raised piece of salmon. Lobster tail served with a ball of cold butter truck stop style. Such a shame, another victim of the corporate spin.

As always, the service was excellent. The wait staff is always well above average. In 10 years of dining here I have always been very satisfied with the service and by the excellent food. My experience tonight with the food was a terrible disappointment. I have since found out that the restaurant has been sold to a management firm from Ann Arbor. I really hope this is not the new standard for this restaurant, because it was a great place to eat. The prime rib was over cooked, and cold. The lobster was also cold and stringy. So I will be watching reviews on Stillwater in the future and hope this was a fluke.

As a Valentines Day treat, my co worker bought lunch for he and I, along with two others. I suggested Stillwater grill. What a mistake!!!!! Four basic lunches equaled over $65.00 AND they got the order wrong!! A FULL sized soup and salad barely came to a cup of each!! The response when we called back was not very accommodating. They were reluctant to fix the issues and when they finally agreed to make things right they advised that we had to come back to the restaurant that same day. This was a huge inconvenience since we were on our lunch break. We will not be going there again!!!!!

They have a great birthday special here, it is basically a free meal and free dessert for the birthday person. Other than that, the food is really expensive if it isnt your birthday. I had a $25 salmon, and if it wasnt half off from the birthday deal, I would have been disappointed in it. It was watery and not that flavorful without the sauce. Make sure you call ahead, the place is always packed. My favorite part of my meal was the mashed potatoes on the side which were amazing!
