Bambu is an interesting place. I will say that if you are in the market for Chinese food and youre in the Houghton area, theres not a better place to go. The food is really quite good and satisfying. Conversely, there are some eccentricities in existence at Bambu which I believe are rather noteworthy. First off, Ive never seen more than two other couples on the dining floor during any of my visits. That ought to give any red-blooded man pause straight away when considering the possible reasoning behind this phenomenon. Second, the drinks are really very subpar in quality, presentation and most importantly, strength. I consider my beverage analysis ability second to none and, therefore, if I were the reader, I would trust this review. At least when it comes to heavy duty hard liquor. Third, they advertise some kind of "cozy" and attractive cocktail lounge which I sure as hell have never seen and I guarantee that if it exists, Id have seen it and been hitting it up from the start unless theyd been hiding it from me out of spite which Ill admit is not out of the realm of possibility. As I said before, the food is quite good but you will pay for that quality. The staff members are friendly if not a tad "spacey" as if theyve been in the back huffing gas - hitting up whippets as they say these days. I like Bambu. Dont get your expectations up too high and youll do just fine.

What a gem! Family tried to dine at Michigan House last night, was closed. On recommendation of Schutes bartender, we made the trek to Sharon Avenue and Bambu. Again, what a gem! *Hostess greets you with wide smile IMMEDIATELY and seats you. Was busy! But rapidly got table for 6. *Server greets you with wide smile IMMEDIATELY, introduced herself, and passed out menus then went for waters. Returned in 2 minutes! *Drink orders arrive in timely fashion. Great Cosmopolitans (huge glasses), wine list very reasonable for traditional Asian restaurant, prices agreeable there too! *Potstickers to die for! Came within 5 minutes, 3 orders for table! *Entrees: have to say that the Mongolian Beef is as good as Ive had anywhere in America. Other entrees--all rated top quality--included Kung Pao chicken, Moo Goo, Twice Shredded Pork. The managers of the other restaurants should eat there and watch how its done properly. BRAVO!

The service was terrible. I sat in there for a good 15-20 minutes before drink orders were taken and a total of 45 minutes waiting for some $13 sesame in lackluster portions and flavor like that of the stuff you buy in the frozen isle at the supermarket. On top of that, you dont even get soup or rangoons with your dinner. I may try the lunch special to see if thats worth it, but Im skeptical at best. *UPDATE* From 1 star to 4 stars This restaurant has made marked improvement since opening and I now visit them more frequently. The service is much better and the portion size that I received during my first visit was likely a mistake. I never go to Bambu during dinner hours, as you WILL spend $10.00 on a plate for lunch. Someone will probably argue, and I will say, "What, you dont tip? Shame on you." But I digress. Bambu has definitely made up for the past bad experience Ive had there, and earned a solid 4-star review.

The food was bad. Service was bad. We ordered Kung Po chicken, it was marked spicy on the menu and it had absolutely no flavor. When we asked the server she pointed to the two small hot peppers on the plate for decoration. Sweet and Sour chicken sauce was all vinegar and no sweet. Our server was fast but did not engage us in any way. We did order dumplings and they were alright but we could have gotten these at any Chinese buffet. Sorry to say this place has great atmosphere and was highly recommended but it is not a place we would recommend at all.

The food was delicious and very fresh. I went there for lunch and ordered sweet and sour chicken from the lunch menu and it came with soup, 3 crab Rangoon, and steamed or fried rice. Very good deal. I have not been there for dinner yet. Also, it was pretty busy when I went in and we got our food fairly quickly; the soup came right away then not long after we got our entrees. The interior was very modern and clean with private booths along the back wall, makes for a great dining experience. By far the best of the few Chinese places in the Houghton area!

I love this place. Everything I have gotten I have liked. It is a more expensive place to eat in the area, but it is also a lot nicer than most other places. They also have a "Chinese menu" which is actually written in Chinese and is true authentic Chinese food. My roommate who is from China took me here and ordered food for our group off this menu and it was so amazingly delicious. My favorite was something they called Chinese pork off that menu. Off the regular menu I love the mu shoo pork.

Stopped for lunch. Probably our 25th-30th visit to this restaurant in the Houghton area. This place has great food, good prices, very good service, the music is right-on, volume just right and interior dacor very good. This is probably the best eatery in the upper peninsula and certainly a four-star statewide. We eat out 4-5 times weekly between Michigan, Florida, Minnesota, Wisconsin and all points in between. We travel by auto 30-35k miles annually. The place is just consistently good.

I have always loved Bambu and been super excited to run there when I visit Houghton, but the last three or four times my oriental waitress has been terrible. Very under spoken and takes my order incorrectly. When I try to explain anything to her she does not admit she has made a mistake. Im sure I will return because I love their food, but I will be specifically asking for a different waitress. Prices also seem to be increasing while service is dealing. Doesnt exactly make sense.

Sorry. This place was recommended by our hotel desk clerk. This is the worst Chinese that Ive had in a long time. The Lo Mein was under seasoned (hardly any flavor) and very oily. The Kung Pao Shrimp was just okay, nothing special. The "Amazing Chicken" was anything but amazing. If you are here visiting from a large city, chances are that you have had great Chinese food. Dont bother. You WILL be disappointed. Please pass the Pepto Bismol!! Ugh.

Fine dining Asian restaurant within the city. Great prices and decent quantity for one. They are a mix of Thai and Chinese cuisine. The beer selection is also from all over those countries and also Japan. I had the Sesame Chicken with fried rice. The chicken was great and so was the beer. I had a friend take me there during my visit to Houghton. I can definitely say I would have done the same if I had a guest from out of town visit.

Kelly Jepsen State Farm ordered lunch on Monday, February 17, 2014. You cannot beat the quality of the meal and the inexpensive lunch for the amount of amazing food served to us. My team was delighted by the lunch choice and we cannot wait for our next opportunity to order from Bambu in Houghton, MI. This order was a take-out experience. The owner is very attentive to detail and we had a wonderful experience.
