My husband and I went to Black Rock for the first time this weekend to celebrate our anniversary, overall, we were not impressed. While the steak was a decent cut of meat, not the best Ive had, not the worst either; cooking your own food is not the reason that I go out to eat, especially steak. First of all, I was expecting more of a nicer, quieter, more intimate atmosphere. Apparently I read the Black Rock Steakhouse, not the Black Rock Bar & Grill name (to me the name "steakhouse" evokes images of padded, private booths, soft lighting, soft music; a nice place to enjoy a meal), instead the place was bar and grill all the way. It was loud both from talking and loud music; there were TVs everywhere. Seating was mostly long benches on one side with chairs on the other side of small tables punctuated by a couple of feet between each group of diners. Intimate it was not as your neighbor was within arms reach and the tables were tiny, even if we had wanted to order a bottle of wine, we would have needed an addition to our table to have space. We had to practically yell to hear each other. The bar and grill is more of what youll get for atmosphere versus the steakhouse (my version at least). Now, on to the food portion of the evening. As other reviewers stated, food safety and lack of warnings about 700+ degree rocks were concerning, Ive been given more warning about a plate being hot that was maybe 200 degrees being used to serve food, not cook it. It does seem obvious but Mickey Ds was successfully sued over hot coffee... Food safety was also concerning, you use the same fork and knife to cut up your raw steak and eat the cooked product too; Im sure if you ask they will give you a second set but seriously what happened to food safety 101, dont mix utensils used on raw and cooked meat?! Sweet potato fries were more like sweet potato wedges;the thick pieces were under-cooked and way too sweet, they seemed to have sugar sprinkled on them. Salad was bitter iceberg lettuce, dressing portions were generous. Service wasnt spectacular, we had to wait several times for things to be brought or refilled. Also, our server seemed less than interested in sharing how Black Rock works, at another steak place we frequent they ask if youve been there before each time you visit and will explain things to you if you havent. Youd think that knowing we were first timers, they have been a little more attentive. But then I guess they dont have to stop by and ask if your steak is cooked how you like it since youre the one cooking it! To sum it up, definitely an experience, probably not one well be repeating soon. If Im going to have to cook my own steak, I think Ill buy a good one from the meat market, find a scrap of granite, fire up my backyard BBQ and do the same thing on my own patio before going back.

Just okay is putting it nicely, now I have been to this restaurant/bar a few times, generally for lunch and a couple work functions where we had our own room, but tonight was the first and last time I went there for dinner. It was our wedding anniversary and without someone to watch our little one for the weekend (she is 6) I thought hey lets go grab a nice meal at least. They dont do reservations which ok some places dont so I am still ok, they say you can put your name on the waiting list over the phone but it doesnt mean an exact time a table will be ready, ok I still am ok, I get it, our non reservation call ahead put us on the list at 8:15pm arrival, again they didnt promise to be seated right away, so when we waited nearly an hour until 9:10pm for our buzzer to go off still no problem, Saturday night, busy, I completely understand. So our buzzer goes off and we walk to the hostess who takes us to our table, we get to our table and its elbow to elbow with complete strangers at a table that is less inviting than at a taco bell?? Really?? I waited all this time for a nice anniversary dinner out to be asked to sit at a little table smaller than my 6 year olds play table?? For real?? Now I am not a shallow person by any means but come on. I am really going to sit in this little tykes chair and drop $200 for a nice dinner? NOPE!! after all that we just left, as did the couple that was seated just before us, maybe a heads up that its possible you will get a cardboard table and asked to sit in a chair made for toddlers. We handled it well without the cussing of our fellow Patrons who where more appauled than us. Moral of the story, its an ok place to eat, with just ok food that they have you cook for yourself and they do not have adult sized seating. Do yourselves a favor, if you want good food, great service, and more reasonable pricing with an actual adult sized place to sit hop on down the road to Alexanders in Brighton. Way classier, and much better service and pricing. It amazes me that the black rock is as busy as it is, people you need to try some more places....trust me you will be amazed. The best part is we had to give our number when we called for our non reservation call ahead and even though we left as soon as the hostess sat us at the preschool Barney table you would think maybe the manager or someone might have called to see where we went?? Nope....but we feel it was a blessing in disguise as we just got home from A great, private, good priced meal at Alexanders in Brighton. We were treated better, saved money, food was better, and they actually thanked us for our business. Live and learn!!!

Very dissapointed. Went there for lunch and ordered a burger and a bowl of soup. My friend i was with ordered the same thing. There was only 8 people in the whole place at the time. We asked to get our soup before our meal and they forgot and finally brought it to us after our meal was delivered. Our meal on the other hand that was ordered one with jalopenos on the side and one with no fries had jalopenos on it under the melted cheese that i had to try to pick off and my friends was brought with fries when he specifically asked for no fries. On top of that our drinks were not refilled once the entire meal. The burger was ok and the clam chowder is very good there but was a bit cold seeing as how i ate it after my burger since they forgot to bring it earlier. The waiter said he was short staffed and he was sorry we didnt get refills and the food was not prepared right, (everything was also very salty) but there was only 8 people in the entire place. Come on, no excuses. This was the last straw for us. We were also in there a couple days ago and they had a special board when u walk in and a special flyer in your menu and we tried to order 2 things off of that menu and they said they did not have it and that it wasnt prepared yet! Are you kidding, what kind of place is this. Horrible service along with ok food. Stay away, not worth the money!
