So, I walk in here, sit at the bar and dig around the menu. Im sitting right in front of the sushi chef (hes da dude dat cuts yo fish up!). I start going through and he just starts up conversations with me. Asked me about my day (traveling alone for work..he could tell). We then get to "whadya want to eat" level of rapport. I say "i see you have fatty tuna on the menu! Do you have any today?!" His face goes kind of limp and you can see a little anger set in. He begins to explain that his fish supplier started sending him "shitty cuts of fish that werent really toro, just tuna with SOME fat" and that hes stopped using that guy because he told him to "piss off." lol Best. Sushi. Chef. Ever. So, 2 things I got from that conversation. This guy likes people. He is also very proud of his work and isnt afraid to tell you the bs he has to deal with to make his customers happy. He truly cares about your experience and isnt out to just make a quick buck by selling you crappy fish that he could peddle onto unsuspecting sushi patrons who arent well versed with what the fish is supposed to look like much less taste/feel. I went with a few recommendations from him. Plus, some of that fresh salmon and tuna + mahi mahi slabs that were staring at my face through the glass. I dont know many words that would express how good this sushi was other than AMAZING! Every. Single. Roll. was to die for. I dont recall what the names were, but one had eel and some sauce and some cheeses melted into another sauce, that was drizzled on top, and then it was baked and delivered in a small aluminum boat. That one died a quick death ;) I also got a generic roll with cream cheese because cream cheese. I never had anybody take a unique spin on that roll before. He had a little pepper or something in it. Gave it a new look and i loved it. There were plenty of neat things he did to make his sushi unique! I cant rave about this place enough. Go there. Enjoy the food. Enjoy the service. You wont regret it. Worth every penny! Food - Perfect Service - Far above average - plus chef honesty!!!!***** atmosphere - Small joint in a strip mall. Dont expect to feel rich when you walk in...or you might, if you have some Old Navy jeans on.

I literally started a profile today just to tell you guys about my experience I have eaten here for the last two or three years they have amazing sushi but they messed up they double charged me and because the bank holds funds I had $50 held for the last five days because they charge me for somebody elses meal they realized the mistake and voided the charge. I went in the restaurant to tell them my situation... they would not do anything for me so I told them they needed to rectify the situation that they needed to be accountable for the fact that they messed up and they told me that everybody makes mistakes and I would just have to deal with it. I insisted that they do something about it they pulled over a second manager who basically started getting loud with me the first manager then gave me the money that they overcharged me and asked me to come back in when my bank reimbursed me now I have to make another trip back in so I said are you going to do anything for me when I come back in the first lady said we are not millionaires we cannot help you she got loud again so I decided to turn around and tell everybody in the restaurant that it was a great sushi but to use cash not a credit card.. this lady again started getting loud basically walked me right out the door while she was yelling was a complete jerk and told me to never come back ...fine I never will... there are many restaurants who not only have great sushi but have great customer service I will not spend my money here again.

Overall: should be 4/5 but I end up giving it 5/5. Definitely the premier sushi restaurant in the eastern suburbs of metro Detroit! Here is why: Service: some of the friendliest service Ive ever had any restaurant anywhere, staff is courteous and if not too busy will chat with you. On top of that you are never left waiting too long. Decor: the place is small and intimate, definitely a great place to take a day and it truly feels authentically Japanese. This is ironic because the owner is Korean but that does not detract from the excellent decor. The food: the sushi is as best as can be realistically expected as Detroit is not a coastal city and the ownership is Korean not Japanese. This means the sushi is good, not great but good and on par with all of the other sushi restaurants in the eastern suburbs. Practically this means I rate the sushi 3.5 out of 5 but because of the decor and service I will bump it up to a 4. As for the Korean food it is very good and to get better you would need a Korean mother cooking for you in her own kitchen, 4/5. The only drawback I can think of is that it is a tad pricey. Asahi is easily 4/5 but because of the Decor and the staff I will have to bump it up to 5/5.

Used to be my favorite place until all of a sudden I brought some of my employees for lunch one day, service was so rude, and then anytime I returned after that I had completely rude service since, I wont go anymore. My employees were very polite and well-mannered, I cant see why or how I deserve that sort of treatment consistently, I used to spend lots of money there, things arent very cheap. Ive always tipped generously, I loved the "crazy day" dish so I felt price was worth it, but not many other dishes were worth the price. Once was a favorite but left feeling very insulting too many times. I did get sick once from the dragon roll but in all fairness, I used to go a lot and it only ever happened once.

Ive gone here several times recently and I have never been disappointed. The presentation is great and the food is delicious. Usually sushi will come on a huge platter or boat not individual plates which is neat (You can ask for individual plates if you want). I have a food allergy and they are always understanding. A few of the times Ive been there the cook will personally come out and ask how our meal is. The restaurant is small and personal. I have only had one roll that I didnt like but it had nothing to do with the quality of food. I would definitely recommend Asahi! I just wish it was a little less expensive.

Finally a sushi restaurant in this area. We used to drive out to Ferndale to Nami, but they started going down hill and we are always wary of trying a new place, so we had a serious sushi deficiency. Asahi is great. We eat there a few times a month. They often give us free stuff to sample and I have never been disappointed by anything I have ordered there. They recently got a new head sushi chef, and the only thing I dont like is the way he prepares the tako su. There is one particular waitress that knows us, and she has him prepare it the way we like. Its service like that that gets Asahi the 5 stars.
