I and one of my friends went in expecting great things from all the reviews we read online...we took seat and ordered calamari, orange martini, pasta and chicken sandwich.....here is how they were, calamari....apparently frozen packaged goods fried and served, when I asked the waiter they simply denied it with an offensive gesture, and it wasnt even any good. martini...has a zesty orange flavour with brownsugar rimmed on the glass and I couldnt even taste or smell the alcohol in it..for $11 it was dole orange juice topped with sugar they gave me. pasta was very good although accompanied with almost stale smelling bread( slightly put over grill along with olive oil) brought the taste down chicken sandwich was so terrible my friend didnt even eat after three bites. he just asked for a to go box put that in and gave it to a man on the street who said he helps the homeless and would accept any food as donation. the entire bill was around $75 including a generous $15 tip. Im not going in there again. for what I was offered I could have gone to olive garden and had a better dinner for half the price.

Sorry I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I sat outside at an unclean table for five minutes, no one bothered to come up and asked if we wanted anything. Asked the waitressed who was busy chatting about her future prospects with other clients at the table next door if we could get served, and was told I had to talk to the host. Why she couldnt have done this I have no idea. I went to find said host; none could be found. Asked someone else to please find host. When host emerged she said please be patient with us. I had been and I left. Place was three quarters empty and really got the feeling that they didnt want any new customers after 10 PM which is a bit odd for a cocktail bar. In the end, you can only blame the management as they need to train people up. Got the feeling it was a bunch of college students working there instead of professionals.

We were seated and waited for 15min before we had to flag down a food runner for service. Our waiter was not professional or timely. The place was not extremely busy as it was game day. I could have made better food for less than what they charge. We had to wait repeatedly only to find waiter chatting with coworkers. The bus staff looked very young and dressed inappropriate. We expected better quality service for the price we paid and the atmosphere of the establishment. After leaving, the waiter came looking for us as we were walking and window shopping down the street and demanded to know why we did not tip him well and stated we owed him at least the standard 15%!!!

Black Pearl is the one restaurant in Ann Arbor that really does it all. The mood at the restaurant is very different depending on the time and night. Ive been to the Black Pearl on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when they have great live music, making it a very fun setting to grab a drink and talk with friends. Ive also been to the restaurant in the early evenings when the atmosphere was perfect for a date. Most of the food is great (the fish tacos are the best in town). The service is nothing spectacular, but Ive been there over a dozen times and have always left very satisfied. I would highly recommend the Black Pearl!

Went just for drinks and dessert. Front staff acted as if seating us was a terrible inconvenience since they were all socializing with one another. Waited 10 minutes for server to acknowledge us. Drinks were very slow in coming. Dessert was even slower- it was not that busy at all. Waitress didnt bring dessert (another staff did) and never came back once after she brought the drinks. Had to flag down a waiter to get the bill. There was a very loud table next to us with several smokers. Staff did nothing to stop the smoking although they were standing right there. Absolute nightmare. Will never return or recommend.

Black Pearl is a great place to eat. Have eaten there many times and not a bad meal yet. They have the best fish tacos hands down. Even if you dont think youd like fish tacos you will love these! Shark bites are good too. Not ideal for families but kids would be okay during slower times. Great place to meet friends. Update July 2012 - Shark bites are no longer available. But the recent menu changes are great. Move over fish tacos. Hello scallops. They are like nothing you have ever had. Very light and healthy but most of all superb taste! This is our favorite restaurant hands down.

The waitress and manager were both rude and unprofessional in handling the problems I had with their coffee rubbed Filet Mignon, which lacked the presentation and finesse that a $34 plate should have had. The brocolli was limp and slathered in butter, had no taste whatsoever other than overbearing grease, the risotto looked like jail food, and my Filet was overcooked to the point that blackened char covered the entirety of it. Completely disappointing and will be telling all of my acquaintances to avoid this place.

Our absolute favorite in Ann Arbor. Every time we visit, we become regulars every night were in town. Best oysters in the city and the Asian beef tips (extra rare) blow us away every time. The chowder is phenomenal as well. On top of all that, they have one of my favorite cocktails of all time, the Strawberry Balsamic. They always have amazing service and bartenders; its the place to be. As Humphrey Bogart once said, "well always have Pearl".

gazpacho was like V- 8 with a glop of sour cream. Calamari that looked anemic but tasted OK but NOT worth the price! Crab Rangoon had NO crab pieces but more like crab juice~~ UGH. My friend who is handicapped had to go NEXT DOOR to use the restroom because they did not have an handicapped bathroom available, even though they are a relatively new. I would NEVER recommend this place and will not return. .

The Black Pearl is a permanent favorite for us. The cocktails and food are very epicurean...top notch. Plus Harry and Jan are epic citizens...they have donated to our fall charity gala silent auditions the last couple years helping us raise over $50,000 for Ann Arbor community and Mott Childrens Hospital. Come here. You will love it. See you there!

We ate here last night, our second time. Sat outdoor, and had great food. I had the tuna & my husband had the scallops. Cooked perfectly and the seasoning was spot on. Our waiter was excellent. Even though it was a really busy Friday night, he did not hurry us in the least. It is one of our new favorites.

I gave it a one star because the food was pretty decent. I would not go here for dinner again, service was one of the worst Ive ever seen. Prices are high but alright considering the food. It took over 1.5 hours to get our app and entree, thats CRAZY!! Will be complaining to the owner once Im done typing...

High top tables and bar atmosphere on the inside. Medium sized patio out front. The food is delicous. You should eat the fish tacos. You dont have to love fish to enjoy them. Be ready for very light heat and an abundance of flavors. The bar is very well stocked. Cant go wrong for drinks and food.
