I will never go back to this restaurant again. I am from Mexico. Mexican food and tequila are the key to my heart. So of course I love the idea of going to tequila bar to celebrate my boyfriends birthday. We arrived there on Tuesday night at 8:40 and we noticed the sign outside the door said they close at 11:00 pm on Sunday- Wednesday. Looking at the time they close on Google now, it says they close at 10:00. Very confusing! We thought we have enough time to relax and enjoy ourselves. Entering the place there wasnt a host or hostess to greet us at the door. We decided to seat ourselves at the bar, plus there was no one else sitting there. The bartender said hello and we asked for menus. Reading through the menu I thought it was weird no one brought us chips and salsa while we waited. Every Mexican restaurant Ive ever been to, the moment you sit down you automatically get chips and salsa. We were ready to order our first drinks and the bartender was no where to be found. We waited for good 20 minutes before we can get our drink order in. Then I understood why it was taking a while. Bartender was also serving the drinks at the other tables near by and I thought, dont they have waitresses for that? After we were done with our first drinks we were ready to place in another drink order and food. I ordered the steak fajitas, my boyfriend ordered a seafood dish and we ordered chips and salsa. On the menu it read, "first order of chips and salsa is on us, 2nd one is $2.00." Hmm, okay? First time Ive been to Mexican restaurant and they charge for it. When we finally got them, the chips were very greasy and salsa was the size of a condiment container they give out at McDonalds. They gave us just one for the two of us. Then we decided to order guacamole. Even though it was $8.00 I was curious to try it out and see what was so special to make guacamole that much! When I politely asked the bartender may we please have some guacamole. The bartender responded, "Are you kidding ME??? NOW you want to order guacamole?!?! They just put everything away!! Unbelievable!!!" I was so appalled. I could not believe he responded to me in such a rude manner. The correct way to respond should have been, Im sorry the kitchen is starting to close. Am I right? I had no idea that the kitchen was closing. Usually any waiter, bartender etc., will notify the customer the kitchen is closing ahead of time so that they may place their order promptly. Otherwise, I wouldnt have asked. I respectfully said, "Im sorry, I didnt know the kitchen was closing. May we have more salsa instead?" My boyfriend was livid the bartender spoke to me that way. After that you can imagine it dampened his great mood on his birthday. Our food came out. I looked at our food and saw that the portions were really small, especially for the price that we were paying. My boyfriends dish only had a handful of seafood. The same bartender asked, "Do you guys need anything else?" I politely asked, "May I please have some more tortillas.?" "You already have a lot of tortillas there." he replied. I looked to see how many tortillas they gave me and I only got 3. I then said to him, "Honestly, I know that I will need more tortillas than this." He then says, " Ill tell you what, how about Ill get you more tortillas if youre finished with those." Again, I was shocked. He was the one that asked us if we needed anything else. I needed more tortillas, then give me more tortillas. Period. Especially, when I am no way shape or form being rude or difficult and Im asking politely. Eating my meal I was hoping that the food would have been worth the wait and the attitude I received. It was just okay. Nothing that would make me want to come back and give this place another chance. I did end up finishing my first 3 tortillas and the bartender got me more. By that time I couldnt even look at him. We payed our bill and felt deeply disappointed with every thing about this place. My boyfriend left angry and I felt bad for him for feeling that way on his birthday.

Michael and I decided to give this place a try today. We will not be going back. Staff was friendly. Decor was nice, although I would not have called it "early aztec" per a previous posting. Very first warning that things might not turn out well was when we tried to open our menus and they were sticky. One of the staff heard the sound and gave us cleaner menus and apologized. We were also amused when were read the drink tent on the table that was misspelled. Our waitress let us know when we told her we were new to the restaurant that the food was authentic Mexican and not the usual Tex-Mex, which was fine for us. I love authentic Mexican after living in San Diego. We started perusing the menu and it was not as authentic as was told to us but then we were told that they were still serving brunch and we could only order from the brunch and/or the appetizer menu. As we were not in the mood for breakfast, we decided to try the sampler as it looked pretty hardy. It contained a couple of different kind of flautas, tamales and stuffed peppers. The sampler was attractive at first glance. There were two kinds of flautas, one we did not even try a bite of as they were overcooked and the filling was burnt. The other one had sort of a tuna flavored fish paste inside and was not too bad. However they should have left off the balsamic vinegar on the pico de gallo. They were also barely warm. In fact most of the supposedly freshly made items, were only warm and not freshly made. The tamales were not bad, although not a lot of filling and again, barely warm. The jalapeno peppers were stuffed with a tuna mixture that tasted fishy and was not appetizing. All in all, it was not great. Also, we were not the only ones who were not impressed. Another couple just had the guacamole and decided not to stay for anything more. Once we got home and looked them up online it turns out Xitomate is owned by Turf Valley.

Every time I go here, the food is delicious, but the service leaves MUCH to be desired. This time, I didnt even have an opportunity to try the food! Online AND outside the restaurant, their hours were clearly posted: open until 12:00 am, yet my group of friends and I traveled from Owings Mills, arrived at 10:00 pm, only to find out they were closed! I just wanted a margarita and some chips and salsa. I asked the bartender, you know thats false advertising, right? She ignored me. I then asked how difficult it would be to make a margarita and bring out the chips and salsa I know they have in the refrigerator. She said, "the kitchen is closed." I guess she doesnt understand how the kitchen and bar are two separate entities.... I spoke with four different people (including the "manager") and everyone was incredibly rude to me. No apologies for closing THREE HOURS EARLIER than whats posted online AND right on their door! One Hispanic girl even tried to pretend she didnt understand what I was saying, but I speak Spanish, so that didnt work and then she ran away. How childish. The food here is really good, thats why I come back, but dont worry about tipping your waiter (if you even have the opportunity to be waited on) because the service is horrible. Thats probably why they have that job instead of something that requires a degree. Im absolutely disgusted.
