DISGUSTING AND APPALLING. FULL OF BUGS. TRASH SERVICE.BURNT AND WATERED DOWN FOOD. My friend and I went to Niwana for the lunch. We ordered the Kalbi bento box and the bulgogi bento box. The miso soup is way too salty. Half of the kalbi was burnt and inedible and the bulgogi came out with water all over it. There was no flavor at all in the bulgogi because it was just watered down meat. The waitress went MIA for half an hour so we were unable to complain or get refills on our water. We were the only ones dining in the restaurant so the trash service is inexcusable. Also 75% of the time we were flailing our arms around trying to get the gnats off our food. The place is swarmed with bugs. Since we did not get any water, I decided to wander about to see if I could find the waitress. YES I had to get out of my own seat to FIND THE WAITRESS in this empty restaurant. Looking for the waitress, I found something totally disgusting. Niwana does not give you soy sauce on the table. They have it on the side station and it was COVERED in gnats and flies and there was a huge blob of them on top of the opened soy sauce containers. Luckily, the host was wandering around and he was able to get us water, NOT the waitress. But the bug thing was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. 30 minutes later, the waitress decided to come by and ask if everything was alright. We complained the the kalbi was burnt and the bulgogi was watered down. She does not even apologize on behalf of the restaurant and just walks away. 10 minutes later she comes back and asks "what do you want to do about it, its half eaten" (only because she has not come back to serve us since putting down our food). We told her our food and inedible and she walked away again without a word. The host comes back to apologize and said he would give us a discount. The waitress comes back with a check (without us asking for it basically tell us to gtfo)and gives us $1 off the Kalbi which is a ridiculous insult since practically HALF the food was inedible. I do not recommend this restaurant at all. They are just squeezing money out of the students at the Hopkins campus. You are better off eating subway at the corner a block away. Do not waste your time or money. This place is a total joke to Korean and Japanese food.

Second time I visited this place while visiting my daughter at JHU, I decided to give them a second chance since my wife wanted to go eat oriental food. The waitress forgot about our table, it took her about 20 minutes or more to come in and say hi. After 10 mores minutes our beverages arrived. We waited from 30 mores minutes before our food arrived when tables around us were being served ( they all arrived after we did ). When the food got to our table my Chicken Teriyaki was cold and the vegies in it were not even cooked. The plate came back after a few more minutes and it was luke warm at best, the chicken tasted like a rubber duck, totally overcooked. Ive been in Japan and any similarity of what were served and Japanese food is a mere illusion. I tried my daughters sushi and it was was poorly made with low quality fish, just a ball of rice with a little piece of fish barely noticeable. The bowl of rice we were serve was not of the right grain and cooked properly, it will no be a dry and compacted as the Japanese style rice is. Dont waste your money and save yourself from aggravation. A thousand sorries from the waitress doesnt make up for poor service and terrible food.

Ive never given any business 1 star but I feel like if there was 0 star option I would give it 0. The service is terrible, especially the big white lady. She took us order without a simple greeting, and showed the face like she was not willing to take the order at all. I ordered a tonkatsu ramen and it took about 40 mins to come. Again the waitress did not show any apologies again. When I tried to get the check, she walked by me three times but chose to ignore me. I ended up not giving her tip. The food is also probably the worst Japanese food Ive ever had.

This is probably some of the worst "Japanese" food Ive ever had. I didnt know you could screw up miso soup. Their ramen is especially terrible. The broth is tasteless and the noodles taste like cardboard. Plus, I did the ramen as take out, and the guy that gave me my order at the front started hemming and hawing about how this was a one time thing and they didnt normally do take out for ramen because it wasnt as "tasty" as take out. I work across the street so it wouldnt be in the take out boxes very long anyway. I wont be going back.

Ive been here many times with no issues, today I visited an ordered the beef bento box(for first time), chicken yakitori. Immediately after I finished my meal I got sick! I threw up once in bathroom there an couldnt make it to the car without throwing up again. I never throw up an this is all I ate on this day. My server offered me $5off my $39 Bill. I was very disappointed an will never return. Be careful!!
