Just love The Muddy Rudder! We eat here as often as possible, and love to bring guests from out of town here. Last night, we were celebrating our Portland Assistant Chiefs college graduation from USM---Summa Cum Laude---so we wanted to have a predictably great time, and we did! ELLEN, our server, is always terrific. We even ask to sit in her section. The wedge salad was tasty, the seafood casserole was rich and had a lovely hint of sherry in the cream sauce. The rolls are always delicious and come out warm, One of our party had the gnocchi and said that is was done perfectly. We were able to swap the broccoli that came with our dinners for carrots and the switch was cheerfully accomplished. The pianist was doing his best but plays every piece with an enthusiasm that sometimes gets out of his control so he tends to bang on the keys rather then play them, but we are musicians and are probably more critical than other diners. Less is more in this case. It isnt bad, its just relentless. Ellens service is friendly and well-executed, and her timing is great! Portions are generous and prices are excellent. We always have fun deciding what new drink to try, too. Desserts are delectable. The blueberry pie is always reliably delicious, and there are other desserts that make the choices welcome. The fried oysters were missing from the menu---a favorite that not many other restaurants offer, oddly---but we found other items that we enjoyed. Lunch is always good here, and anything that has to do with lobster is usually delicious, too. Great, reliable meals male the Muddy Rudder a continual favorite place to dine---and the services is always great. The hosts make everyone feel welcome from the moment you walk inside, and they are always ready to greet their patrons warmly, especially in this freezing weather. ---Dr. Jan Broberg Carter, Portland.

Terrible! We attended a pre reserved graduation/engagement dinner with approximately 48 people. We were provided with 2 waitresses. 1 waitress kept busy, while the other (blonde woman) was mostly no where to be found, and was incredibly rude! After an hour I basically had to beg for a drink. After 2 hours (probably more) our food arrived. Baked stuffed haddock they called it. You could smell the fish as soon as she dropped my plate! It was a 4 inch piece of haddock, with burned crust. The shrimp fell off my fork, and when it hit the plate you heard "ping". I think the chewy fishy tasting things were cut up scallops. The carrots were raw. The rice was disgusting. My daughters steak was purple. I had to "once again" go find the waitress in order to send it back. By the time she returned with my daughters steak, all 48 had finished eating. The gentleman sitting across from me sent his first meal back which was replaced with salmon. As he pushed the sause off the top, underneath laid a piece of raw fish. A woman at another table carved into what they called stuffed chicken. This was also raw! I never mind paying for a good meal. For my 3 children, and myself, the tab was $203+! I would give this place 0 stars if possible, and would highly recommend anyone to look elsewhere, like McDonalds for a better meal!

Waitress smelled like she bathed in perfume to start the evening off and was pretty much useless as we had to chase her down to get any service! I ordered the rudder burger and my sister the ribeye special. First time they both came out raw. After walking around and finally finding the waitress who didnt seem to care but the food got sent back. Then the manager came out and mumbled something about how they screwed up and would fix it. Ya whatever buddy... Orders came out again. Burger was burnt and tasted like dirt! Steak was nothing but inedible gristle. Some 3rd guy came over and asked if everything was better, we said no but he just walked away! And then the manager sent us one small piece of blueberry pie to try to make up for this disgusting meal! One piece of pie! For a table of 3?!?!? Way to add insult to injury! Why not ask each of us if we would like something! Dont just send your horrible wait staff over with some nasty piece of pie! What if we happened to be allergic or something you moron! Never again will I go to the Cruddy Rudder as it is not worth the money spent and I could have gotten a better meal at burger king!

Had a LivingSocial voucher for this restaurant. It has good reviews but it was terrible. It took over an hour to get our entrees, and they were horrible. I had the grilled chicken, chutney and brie sandwich, and it sounded good, it was not. The brie and chutney were on the bottom of the sandwich, put on the plate and it was a gross soggy mess. The fries had been sitting on a heat lamp, and were under cooked. My boyfriend ordered the seafood chowder and it tasted like sherry and cream, with fish thats it. There was no seasoning, no onions, garlic, pepper, nothing, it was bland as could be. He ate one bite and left the entire plate behind. The service was also slow, she was nice, and all, but only filled our drinks 2-3 times, and was no where to be seen for most of the time. There were maybe 5 other tables in the restaurant, and at least 4 other servers working during this time. I wish we had not bought this voucher, and am very disappointed in the quality, taste, presentation and the service that we received. The only plus was the huge plate of Rudder chips, for a mere $7.

About a week ago we found ourselves in Maine having to attend a memorial. This entailed finding a place that could accommodate group dining while providing good parking and a casual, New Engandy but polished grassy waterfront rustic for the purpose of conversation not causing us to shout over a din. Muddy Rudder was just the ticket. As the title suggests it is at the edge of a picturesque marsh. We arrived in time for brunch. 5 at our table had Gorgious lusty looking eggs Benedict while I and a gentleman at other end of the table opted for lobster roll and chips which was deelish. Mine had at least 5 or 6 plump lobster claws. The gentleman , a Colorado Chef, who ordered the lobster roll as I did, had a large bowl of oblong soft shell steamers, too. This place is right on the Main Road to Freeport Village, which , in high season, was kind of crowded. For people with a short time to cram the Maine experience in , I would highly recommend this place as a to or from destination for teaching points north or headed home further south.

We enjoy the restaurant but unfortunately, it fell a bit short this time. We visit Maine every summer for a month or so and this year Muddy Rudders food was just not up to par. My swordfish was a bit dry, the stuffed lobster tail was just okay and the stuffing was also a bit dry. Missed out on the french onion soup as the menu changed for the summer and the clam chowder was not what I had expected. The Mac N Cheese dishes were delicious. The staff is friendly and considerate, but not strong on attentiveness. We had to ask for water 3 times and for dishes to be picked up. We will give it a go again next year in hopes you have improved however for the rest of the trip we will pass on making another 45 minute trip out to see you. The piano playing was a nice touch. We always saw the piano but never heard it being played before.
