This place seems to get a lot of positive reviews so we decided to give it a try. I was really in the mood for brisket... but apparently that is not a menu mainstay and only offered one day a week... go figure. I ordered the special Cubana pulled pork and smoked chicken with potato salad and macaroni and cheese. My girlfriend chose the fried catfish with potato salad and rice beans. My chicken was so dry it wasnt even edible... definitely wasnt juicy or flavorful as you would expect smoked chicken to be. It tasted like an unseasoned chicken breast that was cooked some days ago and reheated. The pulled pork was also pretty dry and had only slightly more flavor than the chicken which wasnt saying much. Both had some strange colored sauce squirted over it which didnt add any redeeming qualities to either dish. The mac and cheese again was dry and tasted as if it had been reheated in a microwave... I never did get the potato salad as they served me what I believe was a pork chili instead... but it was more like a soup. No chili consistency whatsoever. My girlfriend seemed to enjoy her catfish and said it was good but she also disliked both her sides. Very disappointing. I was hoping that I would really enjoy this place but what a waste of money- I ended up tossing half of it in the trash.

I dont know where to start on how much I love this place. I have been working locally in Southportland for 4 years yet sadly just discovered this restaurant this year. First time I came into the restaurant while in line a nice gentlemen came up asked if I had been here before after I replied that I havent, he really impressed me with just his overall happiness that I was their and his passion for what they are doing, with new specials and sides all of the time , smoked meats everyday ect.. Now to make a long story short the food is absolutely amazing, I always get something different and I have never had a bad meal. The prices are also fantastic. Right now Im eating the "shrimp moe boy" which is a fried shrimp sandwich with coleslaw, with a side of skillet corn and mocha pie... I paid less than 10$ for this meal, I usually pay more going to a crappy fast food restaurant, but to get fresh food for less money than I usually pay for lunch, extremely impressive. So to break it down: Food taste, freshness and all around variety is above and beyond, the restaurant is clean, prices are fantastic, and some of the best service ive had in a long time. Absolutely impressed with this place, would 100% recommend to anyone who is in the area!

I moved to Portland in 1990, from Kansas City. I was raised on BBQ. I missed it big time. During my work travels around Maine I met Dewey (the proprietor) at his first Moes location in Bangor. His food is fantastic! Fresh sides that rotate daily, and super barbecue. I stopped at the Bangor Moes every time I was in the area. So.....guess how excited I was to learn that last week he opened his second BBQ shop in my town of Portland, Maine?! Well, Ill tell you. I was his first customer, and I went with the classic pulled pork sandwich. As I expected, it was delicious. A couple of days later I pulled up for lunch and the smoker in the parking lot was kicking out aroma from heaven. I went in, sat at the bar and had a beer and half order of ribs. The ribs and my side of peas and collards were FANTASTIC, and the cold micro-brew made it even better. Moes is a great spot to watch sports; lots of TVs, great music and comfortable seating. But most importantly, the food is top notch. Go get some!

Best place for BBQ in Portland Maine. Nothing frilly or fancy, it does what it says. Ive tried all the BBQ places in town over time and whenever im down in Portland, Moes is where Ill return. The rib meal for 2 is amazing. You wont find more meat on your ribs anywhere in my opinion. Great sides, i love the potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans. I wish they did sausage but all the meats are excellent. I think all their sides are the best in town. Working in the hospitality industry, its my job to know where the good stuff is. Moes is BBQ and if you read this and are traveling to Bangor, check em out up there too on the Broadway Any restaurant where the owner picks up the phone and remembers you from a conversation 2 months ago is always a good thing. Excellent personal service right there.. As an edit 2 days later.. ive just enjoyed the pulled pork nachos. Without doubt the best nachos ive ever had. Get them off the specials list Moes and put them out for "anytime" indulgence ..

Delicious, delicious food! Reasonably priced and very satisfying. I have a huge appetite and Moes always fills me up. The ever changing sides menu keeps it entertaining, but make sure to have the sweet potato, slaw or beans. Great catering options, too: you will not be disappointed in the expertly prepared meats. Also, kids eat free ALL THE TIME! This place is great for families. Check it out on Thursdays for the worlds best Thanksgiving sandwich.

Very clean. Trendy atmosphere. Its carolina style bbq. Vinegar based sauce and the chicken appeared to be cooked in mayonnaise. Overall food was very yummy. They use baby backs for ribs. Mac and cheese was dry but the rest of the food made up for it. Food had a little kick. Corn bread was grilled and had bits of jalapeño in it. Customer service was excellent. If you are in town it is definitely worth the stop.

Ive highly rated this restaurant in the past but last time their the brisket was awful. The prep was fine, the meat quality was very poor. I spoke with manager and he explained the typical brisket was out of stock and they received a substitute and he refunded the cost of my meal. Im hopeful this will not continue and Ill update this review next time I visit.

Ive only been there once so far but I thought it was above average BBQ compared to others in the area. I was expecting bolder flavors but the meat was juicy and had good flavor. I had the pulled pork and brisket. The potato salad was very good and the slaw was fresh. Prices were reasonable and the staff was great.

Good BBQ and good value. Pulled pork and ribs were both solid. For the sides, chili was good, corn was just ok, banana pudding was good and coleslaw was good (but pickled rather than creamy - good in my book, maybe less good in some other). Friendly staff and nice fast casual set up. Good place to go!

Pleasantly suprised at the food and atmosphere here. Thought it would be a quick service place.... something like qdoba or Panera. Nope, felt like a straight up normal bbq place but with hella reasonable prices. Got two full meals with 3 sides and two beers for under $40. And delicious to boot.

Was inquiring about catering and the manager Chad was incredibly helpful and super easy going. Definitely the best BBQ place in Southern Maine. The food was amazing and the staff was happy and helpful. The prices are hard to beat. Definitely a new favorite place.
