The Best Onion Rings! But the rest of the menu is ok. I would really give 3 1/2 stars but that wasnt offered. Need to get better steaks. Or someone who knows how to cook them. Not worth the price you have to pay for them. Sorry not trying to be mean. But the price it cost to eat out now days these places need to make it worth walking in their doors. Paglias has way better pizza then CheckerBoard. You cant beat their onion rings... the rest of the menu is just ok.

Onion rings are about the only thing worth going for. No sauce on the pizza. Bland. Crust tasted stale. Salad bar - you only get to go through the line once. I personally do not like salads leaking into my Oreo fluff. Extra Small plate . Pecan pie tasted like it was 4 days old. Crust was soggy. This was our 2nd and last time. We tried to like it.

Service has been so-so for years, as had the food. Prices are outrageous compared to similar restaurants. We keep giving them new tires because theyre local and keep being disappointed. We spend more here on a dinner out than we do at nicer restaurants. Drive a little further to Knoxville, Indianola, Altoona, or Des Moines for pizza and rings.

Prices too high for the quality of the food. Water and tea tasted like soap, coffee was like warm and old, burgers tasted like the ones you buy premade in the freezer section at Wal-Mart. ...no flavor.Fries are $2.50 extra...making a burger and fries almost $10. Used to love this place growing up....disappointed and wont be back.

Ashley--Im sure if you would have asked to talk to the owner, Karen Fee, she would have given you a discount, or even a free pizza. Dont let this one bad experience ruin your image of the Checkerboard :) I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place....my family and I have been going here for years and havent had one bad experience!!

My first visit was back in the 1970s.. my last visit was my last trip to Iowa in 2009. Great food, great service, and by calling ahead they can handle a crowd of hungry people for a large family dinner of 20 plus. Onion rings, pork loin sandwich, and pizza are my favorites. Its a MUST DO for me when I hit Iowa.

The prices are a little high -- especially for the locale. No pizza before 4pm and not a lot of other options, unless you like various types of burgers. This place seems to have a large following, but maybe because its the only game in town.

When the lady who owns the place cusses a employee out in the dinning room loud enough for everyone to hear I feal a person like that doesnt deserve my business. Also food is way to high price for quality. Not worth the drive at all.

Fun place with decor reminiscent of the Old West. Staff members are classic friendly Iowans and the food is pretty good although a few creative, healthy options would entice a few more patrons.
