Just to be fair, the food has always been good. However, the owners/workers are beyond rude. A number of people I know refuse to go for that reason along. Use to be a regular once or twice a week place we at work would go for lunch, but majority of us now refuse. The shorter owner is so rude to not only customers but his employees as well. His mother works the cash register at lunch. I have a feeling he only lets her out of a locked basement for those few hours a day. What finally did me in was Tuesday afternoon around 4:45. Not a person in the place. The guy who regularly takes your order was in fine form. Beyond rude. Rolled eyes, demeaning comments, impatient sighs and moans. Horrible customer service. I will miss the food but certainly wont miss the attitude the majority of people there have.

First time there yesterday and it was excellent. The sandwich was loaded with meat and very tasty. The wait was worth it. The owner was very nice and very understanding when I didnt know they didnt take the money card only take cash or checks. They do have a money machine there. My bill was $17 and I only had $15 in cash but she was willing to let it slid. Very sweet lady. Had extra money in the car and came back and paid her. The place was very busy and had a very diverse crowd. Nice to see a small neighborhood place that felt warm and inviting. Will be going back and telling my friends about this great place to eat

The Vito is italian beef with cheese served warm. If you like hot peppers start with the lite-hot first. Depending on the batch, their hot peppers can get very hot but still have great flavor. Every sandwhich I have tried had been outstanding. Ive been going to the Manhattan Deli for 14 years now and Ive never had a bad sandwhich. Every order I have placed has been correct. Plan to wait 5 or 10 minutes if you go at noon because there will be a line. I go around 11:00am or 1:00pm to avoid the rush. If you like deli sandwhiches of any kind warm or cold go to the Deli. I guarantee you wont be disappointed!

Nasty service overrules any quality the food might have. I ordered the special, and asked if I could get a pickle instead of chips or a cookie (all three items are $1.25 menu price). Cashier wouldnt allow it. Annoying, but fair enough, Im asking for something special and some places dont like substitutions. The problem came when I was waiting by the counter for my sandwich and two employees were complaining about me asking for a pickle, and that they were doing customers a favor by even allowing a cookie. No place is worth paying the staff to treat the customer with this disrespect.

Wife and I love this place. Not your average sub. Great price for a loaded up sandwich. We can each eat a whole and do so often though one sandwich can be shared and most will still go away satisfied. Always amazed at how much meats on these things! We usually get the Wise Guy, Mama Mia, or Bamboni. They are open ~10 to ~3:30 M-Sat.

Best sandwiches in town, easily. Ive never had poor service, but during the lunch rush they are VERY busy. In fact I can remember on one occasion several years ago my 2 year old daughter eating the sauerkraut out of my sandwich, and an employee brought me a container of it seeing that she loved it so much.

Best deli in Iowa!! Original style sandwiches prepared with excellent combinations of meats, cheeses, and peppers. Family run and from the heart. Oh, and their soups are delicious, too! You cant go wrong eating here, there something for everyone. Try the Vito or Little Italy, my personal favorites.

If you like deli and you go anywhere else, youre just kidding yourself. But, if you can only go one day, Thursday is it. The Thursday Special is an Italian Sausage Grinder...kinda - its not like any other grinder, this ones made with love and something else. Whatever it is, its awesome.

My boyfriend and I went for the first time today because we heard this place was good. It was great! I got Mitchs sandwich which was pretty spicy and I love spicy. He got the Little Italy and it was loaded with pastrimi. Prolly the best sandwich Ive had in a while. Fresh.

No better sandwiches in the world. I have eaten all over the world and tried "world renowned" sandwiches in NYC and San Francisco. Nothing is better than Manhattan Deli. From their mom and pop feel to the quality of food you get. Best sandwich in Des Moines period.

Best sandwiches. The Truly Delicious and the Tuesday Special are my favorite. If youre looking for a side the pasta salad is soooo good! The ambiance isnt much, but Id rather my value come from the sandwich than a nice place to eat it. Great work guys!

Small, family run sandwich shop that features steamed subs, heavy on the meats! Cold sub and veggie options as well. Great service, fast and incredibly tasty. Not hard on the pocketbook but is on the belly! Youll leave full! Will be back!

Great Service and even better sandwiches, soups and side salads are also YUMO... Know what you want before going up to order line is long and they do not have time for anyone to stand there w/o a clue... Zach Johnson is my fav...

Sometimes I have lunch there 6 times a week. Closed on Sunday. I always get the special, with a cookie. Fred and his staff are top notch, just like the sandwiches. If you go tell them Bernard sent you, they know me well.

Good sandwiches and soups -- maybe some of the best in Des Moines; competes with Palmers for that distinction. Building needs major renovation and its a shame. Not much atmosphere to talk about.

As others said service was not real friendly. Not terrible just not much of a welcoming. Food to be honest lacks a little zing. I will be sticking to B and B for Zacks Italian Hot. Sorry guys.

One of my favorite places for Deli sandwiches, potato soup, baked beans and chocolate chip cookies. All of it made in house. Sorry to see we/they lost a long time employee. RIP Mike..

I like the Vito no peppers. Awesome sandwhich highly recommended. Cheese soup also real good. This place also has home made salads and desserts. Pepsi fountain pop.

Sandwiches are arguably best in town. You add the soups, sides, and cookies... I order too much every time, enjoy it, then want a nap. Sign of a great place to eat.

Friendly, family owned old school sandwich deli. Love the zach johnson. Good quality meat and really fresh bread. Italian pasta salad is a good side.

Get the Friday special any day of the week. Thursday is also good with the grinder. Usually eat here at least once a week. Best sandwiches around.

The food is tasty, the place is clean, and the staff is friendly. You order at the counter, and theyll call your name when your food is ready.

This place is awesome! The sandwiches are so tasty, no big name sandwich shop in town can touch it. Try it once and you will be hooked!
