I would say that this was the worst place I have been in along time. The sushi took 35 minutes to get. Fine ill deal with it and move on maybe the service and food will make up for it. Well this was far from what happend. Are water was filled once ever 45 minutes. The waitress didnt talk to us at all anytime we asked for anything it was like a drive threw drop it off and leave. Fine maybe she wasnt having a great day I understand more then you guys know. Next a hour and a half later our food finally comes ...... Cold. Well we sit there waiting for the waitress to come again 10 minutes later nothing. So I get up grab another waitress to tell her. She grabs our waitress she says she will make us some new food thats hot. Fine will get fresh warm food. 10 minutes later we get are food back right the same plates heated up in a microwave she drops it off then disappears, doesnt ask if we need anything just leaves. By this time I couldnt take it anymore my girlfriend and her family needed some. More sauce asked 2 times waited 10 mintues. I got up asked to talk to a manager. The waitress came back asked what I needed with an attitude. I said obviously your manager. He came out spoke to Him asked what was wrong explained to him the situation. He asked what he could do looked very nervous and couldnt speak clearly. I said Ive had the worst time time ever my family came for good food and service. We didnt get ether of them, he said he would take care of it. Came back with my bill minus 2 entrees. Great you have horrible service cold food and wasted 2 hours of my life ill never return, also ill go out of my way to tell everyone and write reviews so maybe somebody else wont get horrible service.

While staying in Coralville, my girlfriend and I asked the consier at our hotel for a good hibachi place in the area. He recommended 3 Samurai. Upon arriving we were told you have to "call the day before if you want to eat hibachi". Ohhhhhkay then. I might add the place was half full, so it wasnt like we tried walking in & they were swamped. Since we were already there, we decided to roll with the punches, get a table, & try the sushi. We ordered 2 simple 6-piece rolls & a couple drinks. It took over 40 minutes for a salmon roll & some tempura. It was very mediocore....not terrible, but not flavorful at all. It took an additional 20 minutes (and asking our waiter twice) just to get our check. GET THIS: while we waited for our bill, we witnessed one hostess STEALING CASH out of one purse at the hostess station and put it in her own. Could not believe our eyes!!! We felt compelled to ask the 2nd hostess working if that was in fact her purse sitting under the hostess station, so we flagged her down. When she said yes, we told her what we thought we had seen. She walked over there, checked her purse, and looked back at us in complete disbelief. A few minutes later, we witness a confrontation between the 2 of them, which ended with the pickpocket girl very audibly saying "how would you even know that?" and storming off to another area of the restarant. We felt soooo sorry for the one girl & I seriously hope the other girl got fired. Pickpocketed by your own co-worker in front of customers. Wow. I realize this review is more about the wait staff than the food, so let me sum it up: THE SUSHI IS BLAND AND YOU BETTER WATCH YOUR PURSE OR WALLET AT ALL TIMES.

Last night was the first time I did the grill where they cook in front of you. I wasnt impressed with the food or the show. The place I went to in Cedar Rapids was way better when it came to the grill. Overall though Three Samurai is one of the best sushi places in the Coralville/Iowa City area. I go there a couple of times a month to get my sushi cravings satisfied. I try to get sushi from there on their "Happy Days" when they have specials on the sushi. I typically order their edamame. It is served cold, some places serve it warm which is my preference but it is still good here. My favorite rolls are the Black and Gold roll, the Dynamite roll, and the Creamy Hamachi roll. The only roll I had here that I couldnt finish was the Fruit Roll-up roll. Gross. Mistake one: Dont mix fruit with sushi. My favorite drink is the Bonsai. It is a mix of plum wine and sake with a maraschino cherry. Their sake bombs are also good. The service isnt the best but it isnt horrible. You sometimes have to wait ten minutes or more to get your water refilled. Worst Experience at Three Samurai: It was Valentines Day and my boyfriend made reservations for a table. The earliest reservation time was at 8:30 PM so we were already hungry when we got there. Then we found out that the reservation was for the grill instead of a table. They said they dont reverse tables so they assumed we meant reservation for the grill. They said it would be at least an hour or more to get a table. I am happy they found us a table in less than a half and hour but still wasnt the best experience.

I only put 3 stars because the service is great, the management is awesome - the food is excellent.... but I wanted people to check over this and note that the last time I was there (3/1), I walked out. I was seated at the backbar which was no problem at all. I was alone and happy to do sit wherever. The bartender had a conversation with the friendly hostess at the bar within earshot about why I was seated there. (It was busy Tuesday night and there were a few people accumulating and waiting for tables). I think he was feeling overwhelmed. I work customer service and very much understand this. I offered to move back to the sushi bar if that would help allieviate things - and that was fine - but the gentleman at the bar just placated me - his eyes said "leave" but he kept saying "thats your decision"... rather than just saying something like "Hey, to better serve you, we would like to know if youd be willing to be seated at the sushi bar?" etc. I told him I will just go up to the sushi bar. I almost sat down at the sushi bar but decided that I didnt want to spend $25+ after that... so I spent my money elsewhere. I just looked down at my sushi sheet and set it at the desk and walked out. Its the first time I went there and felt like I was a nuisance for just being there. I will go back but I will not get seated at the bar and its going to be a long time before I do. Sad, because their Matsuzaka Roll is FANTASTIC.

While the sushi was great, the service flat out sucked. We have given this place several chances to redeem itself after having crappy service, and it starts when you first walk in the door. The hostess has a terrible attitude and was embarrassingly rude to me and my boyfriend. Also, on several occasions they have forgotten to give us chopsticks or drinks before a ridiculous wait for our food. Although their food is good, their waitstaff is obviously a bunch of college kids who dont know the first thing about customer service. Im guessing for most of them its their first job, or they just havent been properly trained. Why go here when there are other better sushi places with fantastic service? As well as staff that appreciate their customers, who are actually the reason that their business/job exists in the first place. I recommend: Sushi PoPo, and Takanami.
