To be honest, this place has always been close to my heart and often a no brainer since 2012, but my last visit was a real disappointment. I hate to give the Thirsty Scholar a 2 star rating, but the customer service was just unacceptable and I hope it was just an off day for them. But getting snarky and sarcastic remarks from the staff, because they werent happy that I had to leave before they made my coffee(I had already been there for 30 minutes), just sours the whole experience. Unfortunately I had to leave so I wanted to tell them if they hadnt made my drink yet, then they shouldnt have to... However it appeared that they started my drink while I was getting ready to leave getting ready to leave, so I opted for a to go cup so it wouldnt go to waste. Sadly they charged me more than what the menu listed, unless they charge for the to go cup which there was no mention from the staff... Once again, I hope it was just an off day for the Thristy Scholar...

The Thirsty Scholar is a local solution to impersonal coffee shops and loud, obnoxious bars. It is a place you can go to get work done, study, or have a good conversation with friends. It is an open environment unlike any Ive seen in Indianapolis with a culture that encourages patrons to sit next to an unfamiliar face and potentially make a friend. They stock local beer, have delicious teas, and use Intelligentsia coffee. As for food, they get the job done by providing what they can with the space they have, sourcing mostly from local vendors. Food-wise I was most impressed with both their house-made guacamole and their mustard sauce (dijon, horseradish, and beets!). Their atmosphere is summed up with their wireless password: vintage1. If youre an old soul like me, youll find the sight of hardwood, warm lighting, and no TVs or neon signs quite refreshing.

Started going to the Thirsty Scholar on the weekends where I typically spend 2-3 hours working. The atmosphere, staff, and food/drink quality are excellent. Typically, I get a latte which is always outstanding. The quiche is very good as well. The staff are incredibly friendly. The first time I was there, the guy working said he hadnt seen me in before and introduced himself to me. They also have beer which, while I have not partaken, is a plus. The high ceilings, bookshelves, cast iron fence, and dark woods give the place a wonderfully comfortable communal feel. The ONLY downside I can think of is that on cold winter days it gets pretty chilly in there as they have huge floor to ceiling windows around the entire restaurant. So maybe bring a jacket in January.

I have been begging Indianapolis for a place like this since I moved here three years ago. I wish the menu was a little more extensive, but the food they have is on-point and very delicious. All coffee drinks that I have ordered have been really great. The beer selection is great, also. Lots of local beers. The building produces an incredible aesthetic and backdrop. Ambiance is relaxing no matter what time of day. Service is great for what it is (coffee shop seating, but with subtle service). Ive had meetings here, Ive studied here, Ive socialized here. I love it.

A calm, soothing environment. A place to unwind after work in the evenings, and choose between coffee, beer or wine beverages. Drafts are on tap daily, that involve a wide range of selections from stouts to ipas and wheat ales to Indiana brewed beer. Live performances also occur every so often, which cater to a mixed crowd of college students, their professors as well as the mature. If one enjoys beer, conversation, a mixed crowd, a break from work or simply a light snack in a quiet area, this is the place to explore. Maybe youll see a familiar face or two, cheers!

This café has become one of my favorite places. Its small enough to be intimate but big enough that you dont have to worry about finding a seat. Long after most cafés have closed they are still open. They have a large selection of coffee as well as beer and wine. I think they make the best chai latte in the world. The staff is super friendly and doesnt mind that I stay for long periods and write. They also have excellent Wi-Fi which you will see many students taking advantage of. They often have great free entertainment so check that out on the webpage too.

Edit: It wouldnt kill you guys to be a bit friendlier. A greeting as a customer approaches the bar to order so it doesnt feel like theyre interrupting or inconveniencing you? This keeps happening to me here, not every time, but a few (not all) of the baristas are just overly heroic and a little bit rude in their conduct. Great coffee, cool live music, fast wi-fi, great place to get work done. Most people here are working. Snacks are fresh and tasty. Offerings after 6pm are mostly vegan. Table service past 6pm.

This a great coffee shop, closed to public transportation, and located in a very safe neighborhood. I just wish they will tone down the music a little bit for people who are actually studying. I was just reading a book and had a hard time concentrating with all the noise. I was there on a Saturday evening from 5-8pm. They have free internet and I only saw one waitress attending to all the tables ( there are approximately 10 tables if I am correct). Some napkins will be helpful too.

My girlfriend and I went here, both of us are under 21 so we went just for the coffee. It looks cool and sort of vintage but definitely gives off a bar vibe, which they are. I had an amaretto capp and my girlfriend had a dirty iced chai. We both liked our drinks. My girlfriend said she thought the coffee was an after thought, a well done after thought, but nonetheless. I would go here more, just wished the coffee had more focus. Friendly staff.

During the week and when school is in session except a ton of high schoolers hanging out here-- which makes for a hard time to find a seat or even study in peace. The coffee and hot chocolate I thought were eh. They do prepare drinks in front of you however mostly syrups are used. There is a parking lot behind building for daytime use only. The pastry in which I bought was dry and felt like it had been frozen then thawed out before sold.

Best coffee shop in Indy, hands down. Its exactly what a coffee place is supposed to be - no blaring music (ahem, Starbucks); the staff is accommodating but never obtrusive; and the quality of the coffee is as good as it gets in the Midwest. Even when its busy, most people there are working or reading, so the atmosphere is quiet and relaxing. Indy has a shortage of non-chain coffee places, so Im glad we finally have a good alternative.

This place has a great atmosphere and something for everyone. Coffee for some, alcohol for others, and herbal teas and kombucha for those who are trying to steer clear of the usual vices. Its great having a place you can get good coffee later in the evening! Non-dairy milk is available for the vegan and lactose intolerant folks. Its a popular place, so dont be surprised if theres a bit of a crowd.

Friendly and low-key atmosphere. Baristas know their stuff without being snooty about it. It has all the charm of a French cafe without having to put up with the French and their smelly cigarettes. My only criticism is that I found their chairs to be a tad uncomfortable. Though this is probably more a product of my (ahem) wide-load, than any fault in the design of the chairs themselves.
