Along with Sunergos and Highland, Quills is a beacon of light in a world suffering through the dark ages of coffee mediocrity. Your first reason to go to Quills should always be the first reason you choose your coffee shop: they are true stewards of coffee tradition. The staff, aside from being some of the nicest in town, possess great knowledge in coffee styles, variety and preparation. Recognizing me as a regular espresso drinker, one of the staff informed me that they were switching to a Harrar bean so the flavor profile would be changing accordingly. To me this demonstrates a respect for patrons by showing a genuine concern for what I will be drinking and how it will affect me. This same scenario is not likely to occur at Starbucks. Add an interesting selection of pastries and chocolates as well as their Red Tea Espresso (non-caffinated unfortunately but incredibly flavorful. Try the Red Tea Miele and harbor anger at me for starting your new addiction) as well as a comfortable spacious interior and there is no reason to pick coffee mediocrity again. On top of it all Quills is local and your patronage will keep money in the hands of those you live around. While Startbucks has long fallen from coffee grace and (I may be the focus of hostility for this) Heine Bros seems not too far behind, Quills will remain a rock upon which you can safely rest your coffee needs.

They have decent enough coffee, but they pretend like its worth its weight in gold. Not only do they charge an arm and a leg for their whole bean coffee, they are pretty stingy when it comes to their in-house drinks too. During a recent visit, I asked for drip coffee in a mug, and the barista, clarifying, asked, "You want a mug for here?" "Yeah, thatd be great," I replied, thinking it was their unlimited refill option. After paying the approximately 8 ounce mugs $2 price, tipping the man, and drinking its contents, I asked for a refill. "Thatll be 80 cents." "Oh, I thought the mug was unlimited refills." "No, do you want to upgrade to the unlimited refill mug? Its an extra such and such...." I was more than slightly disappointed. Dont you order a mug in order to get refills during your visit? Why would you pay $2 for a small mug of coffee when a larger paper cups worth is similarly priced? Why would he have suggested a "mug for here" if not for unlimited refills? To top it off, my disappointment garnered no sympathy from the barista. Its not like I expect them to just give away their products, but there clearly was a lapse in communication, and a dang cup of coffee barely costs anything. Apparently, however, it was worth more to them than a satisfied customer.

Quills has excellent latte recipes with an artistic touch and a lovely, rustic atmosphere. If you appreciate well kept, artistic wooden furniture, you will love the décor here. Even the non-coffee lover will find something here. I have a friend who is a tea lover, and he says this place makes the best chai latte in town. Rather than take his word for it, I tried it myself, and found that I agreed with him. My only complaints are that seating is hard to come by, there is absolutely no parking - not even curbside parking - during certain times of day, and the beans for homebrew are priced entirely too high. Single origin will run you around $20 for eight ounces of beans, easily making them the most expensive in the city. Blends are around $12-13 when available, but compared to the larger quantities offered by their competitors for the same price, are still too expensive. I almost never buy beans here.

Let me first start by saying coffee is to taste and this is all my opinion of course. My brother in law owns his own coffee roastery, and that is some of the best coffee Ive ever had, especially their dark roast (Pierce Brothers Coffee in Massachusetts). Quills coffee taste bitter to me both times of tried it. Ive only had their "cold brew" ice coffee and an iced americano. The americano was a bit tiny as they charged me $3+ for a 160z (light ice, light water). There was about 5oz of liquid in it which makes me think they only gave me one shot. Just not my place and the coffee wasnt good IMO!

I appreciate good coffee, and after four years, Quills has yet to disappoint. I would recommend an iced mocha, but thats just my usual. You really cant go wrong with any of the drinks. The Blacksmith espresso is out of this world... These guys are coffee roasting wizards. The shop also has a really nice atmosphere. Very relaxing & nicely decorated. They have some really cool art on rotation. My one complaint is that it can get quite crowded during peak hours; but I guess thats what happens when your product is so stellar. Anyhow, check this place out if youre in the area. It is second to none!

Okay, the location is beautiful and the wifi is great. I wouldnt say Id never come again but only if I absolutely had to. Heres my beef: Ive been twice and been surprised twice at the ridiculous price of the pour-over cofees they offer. So I got the drip coffe- their house blend. Both times it was so bad I asked for another cup. Both times the second cup was literally undrinkable- bitter, tangy, sour- I dont know how exactly to describe it other than aggravatingly bad. BOTH TIMES, BOTH CUPS!! Pretentious prices and terrible quality will keep me at Heine Brothers from here on out.

Cozy spot with good offerings. Seating is tough to find, and some folks seem to be a bit inconsiderate with sprawling out over a 6-person table by themselves. Slick, clean environment with a warmth that the wooden tables and bench seating provides. We lucked out with parking right in front, but parking is clearly a bear here at this location. I tried the bourbon vanilla latte and it has a nice, subtle flavor. Not a bad stop on our travels!

Quills is easily the best coffee house experience Ive ever had. It has great espresso based drinks and a wonderful ambience that makes it perfect for hangouts, working, or even first dates. The customer service is excellent and the baristas obviously have a wealth a knowledge that make them wonderful for consultation about how to do home brewing better.

Excellent coffee and excellent sourcing. I love that every city has a place that loves wonderful coffees, the best the world has to offer. They had four different coffees I could get as a pour over and they also had chemex as an option. They had two different espresso options. I tried their house blend one. Delicious! Baristas were nice.

I like to come to Quills during my two hour break between classes; however, if rap music continues to be played, I will not return. Not only do I hate rap music, but I find it to be terribly disruptive and makes it difficult for me to study. Typically, I would give 5 stars, but this rating is the result of my most recent visit.

The coffee and other drinks are very good for the most part, but they have the slowest service Ive ever experienced at a coffee shop. Even when there are no customers in the store, it still takes at least 10 minutes for them to take my order and make a drink. If you have somewhere to be, this is not the place to stop for coffee.
