We had passed Gen Hoe on the road several times, and I always wanted to give it a try in hopes that its interior would match the 70s exterior. The decor did not disappoint, nor did the food. While they have certainly updated the interior (the booths seemed brand new), there are plenty of Chinese/Asian touches that compliment the rather retro building. The food left nothing to be desired as portions were generous and flavors were robust. Another Google reviewer described the varied personalities of some of the waiters and described one of them as "surly." I think we got the surly waiter! While not rude by any means, he was direct and effective as he delivered the plates and platters to the table with a thud. It was quite entertaining. I might have thought differently had I not been given a heads up by the other users review, but my partner and I enjoyed our visit. Its a bit out of our way, but we certainly wouldnt be opposed to trying it again. Gen Hoe!

Just came home from Gen Hoe <3 Oh my gosh!!!!!!! Have had their egg rolls & crab puffs , We have missed so much not dining in ;] We wont make that mistake again . This place is the most amazing restaurant in the Fox Valley . Mrs. Lee & her staff are "One of a Kind". The ambiance is so tranquil, and the décor is so beautiful, then the amazing staff is so attentive & informative of the menu. Can definitely see why they were voted "Top in The Valley". The food was fresh & delicious, made to order for sure. I had the Shrimp Kow (Awesome), my husband had the Generals Chicken (The Bomb ) Thank you so much for such an awesome experience, We will be back as should anyone who reads this <3

I have been going to gen hoe since I was a baby, my family has been going here for 3 generations and with my baby it will be 4. This is truly authentic Chinese food, and the people who make this food are actually Chinese. Genny took over this business and has done an amazing job and always welcomed us and remembers who we are. We will keep coming back for years to come, and make sure to ask for shu Mai on Sundays during dim sum, you wont be disappointed. -The reynolds (Ming) family

This is my go-to for comfort food. The owner is very involved in running the place and it really shows. The prices are comparable for any Chinese food but the food is exceptional. Also Mrs. Lee can pretty much make you anything you want. I always order her "special chicken" which is not on the menu and its fantastic. Ive never ordered anything here and been disappointed. Everything is fresh and very tasty!

Really good food. They have chefs from Hong Kong, which means that they have dishes there that you just wont find at the normal Chinese restaurants. The place itself is also nicely decorated and the staff is friendly. This isnt a cheapo Chinese restaurant, its a nice one and you get a lot of food for the money. Youre only going to find places as nice as this in Chinatown, but its in the suburbs.

Food was ok. But all the waiters ( all are older men )kept coming out the kitchen eating while serving other tables food. When cleared our plates, he put theem away then grabbed the almond cookies and fortune ones with bare hands and neither of them are individually wrapped. Those were the few thing that i saw didnt want to sit there picking out all the things they did wrong

Great portion size and very reasonable prices. The food was excellent but I didnt like how the waiter was trying to get me to order a alcoholic drink. My husband is a recovering alcoholic so I support him by not drinking. Since it was the day before mothers day my waiter felt like I deserved a drink after I told him no I didnt want a drink after 5 or 6 times.

Gen Hoe is the best Food ever. They specialize in Szechwan, Cantonese and Mandarin Cuisines. Big portions, a lot of seafood and meats. Best eggrolls around, They do not skimp on meat, seafoods in any appetizers or dishes prepared. No comparision to the just okay resturants where I live in McHenry County. Gen Hoe knows how to cook food that is excellent.

DO NOT EAT HERE. I went with my boyfriend there and he ordered regular egg rolls and they served us shellfish, I am deathly allergic to shell fish and ate some there because they didnt tell us there was shellfish and didnt have it listed in the menu that there was both peanuts and shellfish in it.

Food was excellent, friendly and helpful staff and you can enjoy ordering Dim Sum. Those of you who know, it is hard to find good Dim Sum in Chicago. The place could use some updating to outside and inside is comfy. I recommend this place, many families were here enjoying lunch

The worst Ive ever had. It was so bland and flavorless. The only good thing was the rolls. We got combo rice, orange chicken and sesame chicken and lo mein but it was awful. It all went in the trash with the $60 I spent there. This place is expensive too. I would never go back.

I really like Gen Hoe. Food is above average and amply portioned Chinese fair. Wait staff are all older Asian gentlemen. Some happy, all very professional, and one who is always a bit surly. I just enjoy watching these guys, sometimes theyre a riot. I recommend.

I love Chinese food. I go to all the Chinese restaurants around to find the ones I like the best. Since 1992, I have searched and never found a Chinese restaurant to equal Gen Hoe in Northern Illinois. Amazing food, excellent service, and reasonable prices.

Amazingly Awful. Ordered dumplings, received wontons. Ordered succulent orange chicken, received shoe leather with a strange sauce. Both the sweet and sour and wonton soups were heavy with grease. Clearly, this restaurant has outlived its usefulness.

Ordered sweet and sour chicken and sesame chicken and it was horrid. They obviously put the wrong sauce on.... It tasted like buffalo sauce. China wok and China taste are much better and affordable choices in the area. Wasted $50!

It took a while, but we finally found a place out here in the fox river tri-cities that has an excellent bubble (or boba) tapioca tea. They only have a few flavors, but both the strawberry banana and lychee are very tasty.

Ordered Mongolian beef and received something with a spiced hot sauce filled with peppers. When I spoke to the owner about the mistake I was given a lecture about what Mongolian beef is and that I made a mistake ordering.

I am good friends with multiple employees here. they say they cant believe they pass health code inspections! if you want rust and mold in your over priced Chinese "cuisine" then this is the place for you.

I love Chinese food, and in the years Ive lived in and near Chicago Ive searched far and wide for the best restaurants. Gen Hoe is the hands-down winner for Chinese food anywhere within two hours drive.
