I am a Hoosier so obviously I couldnt resist going here. Now its in my agenda every time Im in the city! Fun atmosphere, really hip, easy to get to location, mostly friendly staff (there is one gal in particular that is always kinda grumpy... Ha), and most importantly DELICIOUS food. Ive not been disappointed in a single thing here. I love the small (aprox 6 inch) pies. They are perfect to get a couple with a group and try all the different kinds. There are always a couple standards (like sugar cream pie! Totally an Indiana thing. You HAVE to try it) and there some more seasonal pies. There is also a selection of savory pot pies, hand pies, and quiches. The hand pies are something great for a quick portable lunch. And the quiche...omg. So so good, with unique fillings too. They also offer some sandwiches and salads, which obviously arent the stars, but still very good. As far as drinks go, they have a great coffee bar. With, again, unique flavors. I had a lavender honey latte and wow! The have a cooler full of artisanal sodas as well!

Something about homemade pie conjures images of down-home friendliness and a burst of fresh flavor and warmth. This place has the pie-flavor bit down, but the friendliness doesnt exist. The staff, which seems to consist solely of petulant college-age hipsters full of ennui, isnt worth it. The pie is good, although the crust could stand to be a bit lighter and flakier, but the level of staff inattention, rudeness, and obvious irritation at having to wait on customers is too much. This is the Chicago area. There are a LOT of pie places. I like Dollops coffee, and this should be a winning no-brainer pie-and-coffee combo. But no. Im never going back, nor will I recommend this place to anyone. Youll have a better overall experience just buying a frozen pie at Jewel. The flavor wont be as good, but you wont have to look at doofus idiots more interested in checking their phones than doing their jobs.

Breathing space has finally arrived for the hard-working pastry chefs and kitchen staff of Hoosier Mama. From a tiny Ukrainian Village outlet, this crew has produced first-rate pies, pastries and more, spawning national recognition, and now, they have a brand-new place to flash those wonderful wares. Do not pass up those scones! I had the chocolate-chip version on my first trip, and it was delightfully moist but also flaky. Sandwiches are great too, served on fresh bread with generous portion sizes. My third-trip to the store led me straight for a cortado and classic apple pie, both outstanding. My only "complaint" is slight: I wish the space were a little less "new," a little more cozy with the homely patina of its original location. But take that "indier-than-thou" comment with a generous grain of salt, this place is sure to please and is a welcome addition to Evanston.

Ive been to Hoosier Mama a handful of times now, and I can say two things for sure: they have good pies and a great space. They have plenty of seats (individual, bar, communal tables, and outdoor seating when its nice), which is great because the line can get pretty long on the weekends. They sometimes have live jazz/classical music too. If youre there for lunch, I would recommend their quiches and hand pies. For sweet pies, I particularly like their cream and custard pies. My favorites are the chocolate cream and espresso cream, and the ginger custard is different in a good way! I docked a star because the quality of their crust can be inconsistent: Ive had some crusts that are wonderfully flaky and others that have been as hard as rocks.

My girlfriend hit this place up for lunch with a pal. Together they had a pot pie and some pie and she said both were delicious. Ill be heading back on my own or with her to sample the pot pie. She brought home an apple pie and a sugar pie. The apple pie was great, densely packed with apples with a weighty crust. It was a hearty and autumnal treat, something to munch on as the leaves turn and cold wind blows. The sugar pie took pie eating to 11. It was amazing and I had a hard time not just eating the whole thing in one sitting. Ive never had a sugar pie before but its a delectable and creamy experience with a taste somewhere between sugar/molasses/maple vaguely reminiscent of some sort of midwestern baklava. Check this place out!

It only got two stars because I spent the whole afternoon writing a research essay and they didnt bother me at all. Coffee and free wifi got it another star. However, their pie is nauseating. I had a slice of banana cream because it is one of my favorite things in the entire world. The pie itself was the equivalent of pouring sugar down your throat. GROSS! The bananas were cold, the custard/pudding was basically overly sweetened whipped cream and who put white chocolate on this pie? I took 3 bites and threw the rest of it out. It also doesnt help their cause that each piece is $6. I can make a whole pie for that much at home (trust me, I do it all the time). What a shame. I had such high expectations and I was let down big time.

This was disappointing. I had the pork apple sage pie. The pork was ground, and the apple and sage were indistinguishable to the point where if it wasnt in the name of the pie i would know it is in there. Suggestions - use real pork, have nice chunks of apple, and a gravy that has that hint of sage would be sensational. Heck, why not throw some pork crackling/scratchings on the lid of the pie as well? Oh, and dont reheat the slice, cut me a fresh slice please. I dont understand how your pie of the day needs to be reheated. Mine had some colder bits in the middle! Maybe it was an off day or maybe i chose an average pie. Whichever it was, unfortunately it did not live up to its Google rating.

My girlfriend and I decided to stop here with a couple of family members for coffee and a slice of pie. They did a great job making the top of our coffee look fantastic. So we sat down and had our cold beautifully decorated coffee. The pies we ordered were great. We decided to take our conversation out to the patio area as they wanted to close, family members catching up on so much. They actually came outside and asked us to leave the courtyard, yet said nothing to the two women standing five feet away. I am truly bothered by theses actions that really have no merit. To be honest we will most likely never stop here again. We are all small business owners and are sadly surprised by these actions.

Awesome pie joint! They have a great selection of savory and sweet pies that changes daily. Plenty of traditional pies and a lot of interesting choices. All very well done and really tasty. Try something that youve never had and youll probably be pleasantly surprised. They also brew Metropolis coffee, one of my favorite coffee roasters in Chicago. Their customer service is quick and friendly. Even if there is the occasional short line, it moves quickly and you dont have to wait long for your pie. Substitute one of their savory pies for your lunch or dinner and youll be pleasantly surprised. Highly recommended.

I would give Hoosier Mama 5 stars if their pie crust was lighter and flakier. A flaky crust is the cornerstone to a superior pie experience. Hoosier Mamas pies have a really tough (and not particularly tasty) crust...but the variety of fillings ( which are super delicious) is great. All the other food served is excellent. Enjoy the space but the staff is hit or miss. Sometimes they are open and friendly...sometimes snooty and cold. I have recommended the place to a lot of people...but I always give them a heads up on the lack luster crust.
