This was our first visit to Rivas and our first visit to Chicago. We were looking for a restaurant on the pier so we could look out over the water while eating. There werent a lot of choices and we were skeptical about eating in such a high tourist area. We were pleasantly surprised at the food quality and the ambience. I had the scallop fettuccine. The fettuccine was nicely cooked and covered in wild mushrooms. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly and added a delicious flavor to the light sauce that was on the fettuccine. The swiss chard added a lovely texture to the dish. While this dish only had three scallops, I could barely eat the last one. They were rich and perfectly cooked. A beautiful pan sear on the outside and moist and delicious on the inside. My husband enjoyed the pappardelle with jumbo lump crab. This dish was filled with crab and the toasted almond cream sauce was just the right lightness for the dish. The tuscan kale gave the pasta dish a nice crunch. We were both extremely happy with our meals. If you go in the summer make a reservation around 8:30pm and enjoy the fireworks over the water while enjoying your food. The fireworks are only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Dont let the tourist area of this restaurant steer you away from some very good seafood.

My girlfriend made reservations for my birthday. She had requested a window seat and a bottle of wine ready. When we arrived, we were not seated at a window seat and we had to let them know of the pre-arranged reservation. We were told that they could not accommodate a window seat because its busy and everyone wants a window seat. We were then told that they dont take reservations, its first come, first serve.... Which is odd considering they confirmed everything in an email LOL. To be fair, they offered to reseat us when someone left, but we didnt want to move tables after we were already seated with wine and bread and make a spectacle. Not a huge issue, certainly not snobs, but why confirm a reservation by email if you dont take reservations? Little strange. The gf was a little disheartened as she took the time to make this arrangement to setup the perfect birthday dinner for me :) The second con for me was that I had asked for a medium rare steak and it was medium at best and a little burnt, but not in the good, charred way. For a $55 USD steak... That good - even where we were seated, the view was nice and she got me to try King Crab for the first time and while I have nothing to compare to, it was delicious!

Having gotten to the end of the pier youll come to the beer garden. After youve had some time to walk around and eat its the perfect place to take a load off and relax for awhile with a drink, good music, and a great atmosphere. The beer garden probably has my least favorite food of the entire pier but has a great drink selection (if overpriced) and setting for spending a sunny day (or night) by the lake, at least until 10 when they close. Generally there is comedy and live music most weekends as well as a great skyline view. (Not as good as by the Planetarium but its probably the next best thing unless youre out on a boat.) There is also an amazing view of fireworks on the lake throughout the summer from June through August multiple nights of the week! Overall its a great place to spend some relaxation time at after being out in the sun for awhile. Better food or cheaper drinks would probably top the experience but as theres no reason to lower the drink price its all on the food at this point! (Hence why I mentioned eating on the way there.)

After we finished our dinner, the waiter brought a disposle hot towels to wipe our hands. The waiter dropped one towel at the floor and she picked up and give it to me to wipe my hands. She thought I didnt see her. I told her is that the one you just dropped and guess what she said ( yes do you want new one) WHAT.... Of course I need new one. I asked for the manager and I told her She has a bad attitude since we came and with towel thing I think you should know about her. I paid a 20% to the other two waiters that helped her and I told the manger I wish you guys dont split with her because she doesnt deserve it. unfourtantly mangaers keep these kind of waiter because they think when customers complain about service or food or waiters they are trying to avoid the tips which I didnt as I said I paid 20% out $240 bill. I like the food but they are expensive for the portions they provide. I would not go there again because this waiter and her attitude and I wish the owner knows about what happens he may give them some lessons.

We a very enjoyable dinner here. We were seated at a table so we had a view of the pier. We started with the calamari and roasted beet tower. The calamari was cooked very well, crispy, light and not chewy at all. The aioli was good too, and I am not a fan of aioli. The beets were good as well, fresh and crispy, and sprinkled with cheese. Yum. She also had the lobster corn chowder, which she said was better than she expected, she is not a fan of corn chowder. For dinner she had the Australian Lobster Tail, 12 oz. and i had the petite filet. Both our meals were cooked exactly the way we wanted them. I had asparagus parmesan or something like that, it was excellent. She had the sauteed spinach and a baked potato. She could not finish her meal, and I was satisfied with flavor, price and amount of food. The service was excellent, and the meal experience just made our date night that much better.

This restaurant was nothing to rave about. They do not start seating anyone in the dining room until 5:00 so be sure you are not early. We were about 10 minutes early and found this out. We sat at the bar and had a glass of riesling-the glass was poured 1/4 full of some cheap wine and still cost us about $10 a glass. We then were seated by the window. It is a decent view however it is an obstructed view at times due to large beams in front of the window. The food was average-we ordered lobster bisque to start with and there was literally a few shavings of lobster. very disappointing. He got the soft shell crab and I got shrimp. His crab was tiny and was bland-very fishy not much flavor. I was served two large shrimp ($17) and they were average. We did not eat dessert-we were ready to leave having felt like we wasted over $100 on this meal.

The server was nice, also had a nice view. We got the combo seafood platter(shrimp, mussels, and crab) and order an extra half pound. Food came out in a timely fashion but it was a major let down. I have been to Key West Florida and have gotten a pound of crab; what they gave was a joke. It wasnt even a full pound of crab even though they said it was. They said it would have a white wine garlic sauce. None of it had any flavor. It was the most flavorless seafood I have ever eaten. I could have gotten better food at red lobster and paid less. I have gotten snow crab legs from red lobster even and it was more than what Riva gave. Highly disappointed. Will NEVER eat here again. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME!!
