We discovered Garifuna Flava at the Lakeview "Taco" Festival in the Summer of 2014. They were serving up jerk chicken tacos. These tacos were seasoned to perfection, and provided an explosion of Caribbean flavors dancing on my tongue. The jerk chicken tacos had a mild-spicy kick, but my tongue was not on fire. Tender, juicy and outstanding, so we decided to hit up this restaurant for lunch one Saturday afternoon. Lunch prices are reasonable. For starters, we ordered the Panades which were incredibly prodigious! We also ordered the Hudut Baruru w Falumou and the Conch Soup (filled with fresh seafood and served with a die of coconut rice and sweet plantains), which were super delicious and filling. Both are worthy of five-stars. The only reason I am giving a 4-star rating is because service was super slow. However, the service was hospitable, professional and courteous. Our server kept our water glasses filled. Service was not over-the-top attentive, but it was not horrible either. This is a non-pretentious restaurant. The food is made from scratch and everything is very fresh. If you have a sweet tooth you must try their "Milk Cake" for dessert. This dessert is definitely 10-star worthy! I recommend this place for solid, prodigious and stick-to-your ribs comfort cuisine. Read the reviews at Yelp. You will understand why this restaurant has received rave-reviews. Go. Eat. Enjoy!

Ate here last night with my husband and daughter. Yum!! I had the ox tail stew, hubby had the jerk chicken and daughter had the sautéed shrimp. All were served with a HUGE side of rice and beans and delicious plantains. Loved the sauce they gave us for the rice and beans too. Ox tail stew was rich and delicious, the spice on the jerk chicken was absolutely outstanding and whatever was on the sautéed shrimp was so good we wanted to lick the bowl! Not fancy and that's part of its charm. The owner came over after our meal to greet us and ask how we had heard about them and we thought that was very nice, just wish it was closer to our home because we would go there often. If you are nearby, check this place out. You'll be glad you did.

So, this experience would have been a five star if they werent out of everything that I initially wanted to try. I ended up ordering the oxtail stew which was SO tender, and the sides and condiments that came with the entree were enough to have leftovers for the next day. The dining area is unassuming, and the atmosphere is VERY casual. Clean though, so no problems from me there. Dont expect free refills, pop comes in cans and you have to request for it to come out WITH your food, so your ice doesnt melt before you start eating. Can be a bit pricey for the food that comes out. Dont be alarmed that food may come on disposable plates with disposable cutlery.

Saw Garifuna Flava on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, so being from Arizona, had to check it out. Staff was very friendly, Hussien our waiter was the son of the mother who was in the kitchen cooking our food, as she was when Guy was in the house (Food Network). The food was fantastic. The flavors and textures, awesome. I like it so much I think Im going to have to try making some of those dishes myself. The pricing was fantastic. The staff and service, very friendly. If you have a chance to ever get here, get here and check it out. Garifuna Flava is awesome, I highly recommend.

Best carribean/Belizean food Ive ever had! This place is definitely a best kept Chicago secret. Order the fish panadas and you will be back desperately for more! The stew is my favorite, but you honestly couldnt go wrong with anything on the menu. The service here is very warm and friendly. This family/mom & pop definitely got it right! Plus any place that has my Guys (Guy Fieri) stamp of approval surely is a gem. Come here! You will NOT be disappointed.

We went to Garifuna Flava on a Saturday evening, and it was very quiet, only a few other diners. It is probably mainly a lunch place. The decor was clean, neat, and downscale. The food was excellent: stew beef for me and stewed chicken for my companion, each with a tasty sauce, and fried plantain. Prices were probably the best you will ever find. Just my kind of restaurant.

I went here because of great reviews. I had a taste for conch fritters and Im from Miami so I know a thing or two about conch fritters. Garifuna Flavas conch fritters were horrible and burnt. And no sauce to dip them in! I was extremely disappointed even more so that I drove from the lakefront for nothing! Their panades were good though which is why they get 2 stars from me.

Two words: conch fritters. Delicious flavor that just keeps going. Subtle cabbage relish garnishes several Carribean dishes. Jerk chicken was good; the charismatic cook was a pleasure to speak with as he explained some of the history and culture of Belizean cuisine. Also is an occasional hotspot for Punta music. Dont forget to have a Belize Long Island Iced Tea ;)

My husband and I went to Garifuna Flava last night and everything we ordered was wonderful, we loved the different flavors of the food. Were going back soon to try more on the menu. If your tired of the same restaurants like us give Garifuna Flava a try, you wont be disappointed. Thank You Bev, if you didnt tell me about it I wouldnt known about this treasure.

I have been coming here for about 3 years. My favorite foods are the conch soup and belizian chicken salad. Please try the conch fritters they are totally awesome. If you are on a budget they have daily lunch specials that really hit the spot. The staff are always friendly and the restaurant has great music and extra clean restrooms. It is also child friendly.

Today, May 16, I visited Garifuna Flava for the first time with some colleagues. The food was GREAT AND DELICIOUS! The service was very warm and family like. I tasted the Panades, sweet potatoe cake and caramel pound cake all were GOOD, GOOD AND GOOD! I will definitely be returning to Garifuna Flava a hidden jewel in a local neighborhood.

We stopped here on our trip to Chicago, the neighborhood is suspect, you might want to drive there and not take public transportation. Food was great though, I think we got their fried fish, of course rice and peace, maybe even some oxtail type dish that was really tasty. Also worth the trip. and their Mashed Plantain was Mmmgood.

Really solid food at a great price range. I really enjoyed the stewed oxtail and the red snapper was magnificent (a little pricey at $18... though). Also, their jerk chicken was phenomenal - very tender. The rice with mashed peas was really tasty. The service was lovely too... Its quite a hidden gem :).
