I absolutely love their cakes. The variety is amazing and the level of detail they put in each cake is the best. The cakes are not overpoweringly sweet, and are made with good ingredients like real whipped cream in stead of plain icing. HOWEVER, the customer service is HORRIBLE. The ladies at the counters are so unfriendly and rude. The other day, I went in and ordered some fruit tarts. The ones displayed in the front of the shelf looked really fresh, but the ones in the back where its easier for the staff to grab were all wilted and dry.. Naturally the one I got was so old that the fruit looked like they were dried fruits. This was going to be my husbands birthday cake, so I wanted it to be perfect. I tried to ask the lady nicely to switch it with the fresher looking tarts. At first, she blatantly ignored me, pretending not to hear. So awkward. I was insistent, and after finally getting her attention, she tried to switch it with another aged looking cake. Finally she gave in with an annoyed face and gave me the one I wanted, but it took me 2 attempts to get this. REALLY? I wondered if she was as unfriendly to other customers as well, but as I was walking out of the door, she was happily speaking with another Polish lady in Polish, laughing and smiling. So watch out! These people really like to discriminate if you are not Polish. And make sure you look inside of the box to check what you got is exactly what you asked for. Reading other peoples comments, it seems like they serve customers with cakes that have been sitting on the shelf for days... If it werent for the horrible customer service, I would be coming back so much more. Shame.

Very bad customer service. Lady was curt and abrupt. Said no without even trying to find out my requirements. Emailed the company a week ago but received no response to my email. Here is what I said in the email: "I visited your Arlington Heights location last evening for the first time. I went in with high expectations because a lot of friends had recommended the place. I wanted to order a custom cake for my daughters 4th birthday. It was a simple order to make a cake spelling out the 4 letters of her name. I showed a drawing of what I wanted and asked for a quote. A lady came out telling me that unless I wanted a cake for a 100 people, it was not going to be possible. Thats because the template for each letter is big enough for 25 people. She quickly described what a cake for 25 people looks like and how much it would cost. I asked if it was possible to make the letters smaller because I needed it for about 40 people. She curtly said no. I walked out of your bakery disappointed that your apparently famous store does not have a single baker with the skills to make a simple cake. Why do you advertise the words "custom cakes" on your website with pictures of fancy cakes when all you are able to make are cakes that come with a template? Maybe my order was just not big enough for your kitchen to accommodate the request. Maybe I should have gone to a bakery that focused on customers rather than the bottom line. Either way, Ill continue to search for the bakery that would bring a smile to my childs face. "

I picked up a dozen sweetrolls and a box of cookies on my way in to work this morning. When I walked in I asked about their selection of breakfast pastries. The staff member said "What you see here" and pointed to a tray of sweet rolls on an otherwise empty shelf. She was curt but I was in a hurry. I asked for a dozen which was pretty much all but 2 sweet rolls on the tray. That should have been a red flag. She then took her time putting them in a box. While she was boxing them, I noticed several clear plastic boxes of cookies but I didnt really like the variety so I asked her for a box of just the chocolate cookies. They were very pretty and delicately decorated. She then pulled out a cardboard box. I asked her for a plastic box and she said they didnt have any. Red Flag number 2. So I just bought one of the prepackaged boxes of cookies. They were all stale. The cookies, the sweetrolls, they were clearly not baked in the last 24 hrs. The cookies must have been boxed days ago. It was embarrassing to offer these to my coworkers.

I worked with Joanna at the Arlington Heights location and she was extremely helpful and a pleasure to work with. My now husband is a huge sweets person, so he was really looking forward to the cake tasting. We had our first tasting with the Baking Institute which was awful, so we didnt know what to expect when we met with Oak Mill. Unfortunately, my husband was unable to attend our tasting, so my parents accompanied me. We were able to select when we arrived several different frostings, preserves and different cakes. We fell in love, which says a lot since I really don’t care for sweets. Joanna was even kind enough for me to take a few samples of our final selections home for my husband to taste. After trying them, he couldnt wait for the actual wedding cake! Joanna helped me design the cake and explained everything to me. My husband and I plan to order a cake from here on our one year anniversary!

As our venues preferred vendor, we picked our vanilla cake with fudge filling from the Arlington Heights location and it was perfect! We could definitely see why our venue loves to work with them-- they were so helpful and the cake was absolutely delicious. A couple of brides that I have talked to said that their cakes from other vendors did not taste the same at the tasting as it did at the wedding, but this was not a problem with Oak Mill. It tasted just as amazing as it did when we went to our tasting. When I was scrambling with last minute wedding details, they were the ones that called me to confirm, which was such a relief because I would have definitely forgot to call and might have panicked later. They also accommodated my heavy cake topper without any issue. If you want to make sure that your wedding cake is beautiful, delicious, and taken care of without any stress, Oak Mill is the way to go.
