I really used to like coming to the varsity when I first moved over from the west coast. I have visited several different locations. But today I visited the location on North Ave for the second time in about a month with a buddy of mines , so we decided to stop by again on fathers Day.. * When we first arrived we were in line all of 5 min before the power went out in the place at about 10:45am so we waited about 15 min to see if they were ever going to get the power back on. So while we were waiting one of the cashiers did offer everyone something to drink. While all the other employees scrambled around trying to figure out what to do the scene was rather chaotic to the point it became extremely annoying. One cashier wanted to pass out drinks to ease everyones frustration, while another lady in the back was telling her not to give anything because the drinks were to expensive... EXCUSE ME !!!! We are in a hot restaurant waiting for the power to get cut back on so that we can order our food and go and this rude annoying employee is playing like she owns the place. Get a life !! NOT ONLY WAS THAT DISGUSTING BUT RUDE AS HELL. Then not Mention the fact that Im more baffled and DISGUSTED at the fact that it seems like this varsity location is running a slaveship instead of an actual restaurant. I have noticed this time and time again visiting this location. My advice to the varsity team and owners/ general manager etc.. would be to have a more diverse employee line up. HOW SICKING !!! Its disrespectful and absolutely sends the wrong message especially considering the clientele here. Wow !! Wow !! Wow !! I mentioned this to the cashier as well while we waitied and she informed me that I would have not been the only person to say this and that other customers have mentioned the exact samething. I realize this is the south but this 2017 in the south NOT 1965. I will definitely not be returning here under any circumstances and encourage others to do the same as well until they make some changes Major here. Also.. why in the world wouldnt this company have a back up generators for power outages ?? You mean to tell me the slave owners cant afford an extra generator on this plantation ?? IM DONE ..lol Coming from a place like California where unity and diversity is greatly displayed the message I got here today Was very troubling and speaks of the ignorance and the mindset of the people here in Atlanta. If you support this varsity then you basically support this racists mentality and Outlook on the future of this restaurant. NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN !!

I dont know what all the fuss is about. Came here on the recommendation of a friend who is native to Georgia and says this is her comfort food. When we arrived, there was a massive line, but I though this was a good thing. Lots of people means good food, right? Wrong. I ordered the two chili burgers and onion rings combo, and my wife got the Bacon Cheeseburger and fries combo. The chili burgers looked disappointing from the get go, and they tasted just as bad as they looked. The burgers themselves were tiny - about the same size as a $0.79 McDonnalds hamburger. And for a restaurant that advertises fresh food, they were not fresh tasting at all. The bun had already absorbed most of the liquid from the chili, so it was obvious that it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. And it wasnt good chili either. With a chili burger, you should be able to taste the meat and chili separately; with these I could not tell any difference. Just somewhat mushy meat and mushier chili. The onion rings were pretty good: well breaded and cooked right. But I could not get past how astoundingly salty they were. The burgers were absurdly salty as well; I suppose this restaurant tries to mask the lack of flavor with an excess of salt. I tried some fires and they werent bad, but they werent impressive at all. They were not really worth finishing. I can sort of understand how people could like this restaurant, as it does have its own unique feel. But I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, and in fact Id steer people away. There are just so many good burger joints out there, from In-N-Out to Five Guys to Whataburger. Hell, Id rather go to McDonnalds myself - the food is cheaper, of the same quality, and I wouldnt enter with high expectations.

If you would like a run-of-the mill hotdog with horrible customer service, this is your place. We stood in line 6 deep for 20min with 24 PEOPLE WORKING to place our order. Our order came out wrong, but since we didnt know the "code words" for the way you want your hotdog made ( "walk a dog" is a hot dog to go, and just ordering a plain "hot dog" comes with chili and mustard btw), it wasnt their fault that they had screwed up. We dealt with it, then made the mistake of going back for dessert. We initially went to the designated ice cream counter, where the gentleman behind the counter acted as if it were a tremendous burden to walk across the store to get a chocolate milkshake out of another machine. He then told us "it would probably just be easier for you to order at the other counter" We stood at a register for 15min while staff continually walked by us, not saying a word, and providing no service whatsoever. When I finally got an employees attention to tell them we needed service, the employee at the register beside us said "there wont nobody behind that register, thats why you didnt get served". Are you kidding me! I am standing at a register with the last persons receipt still displayed on the screen, so the register is obviously not closed. Nobody took any initiative to tell me that I would not be served at that register, they just walked by completely ignoring me. And remember, there are 24 people working and this is at 9pm on a Thursday night. I got my refill and a chocolate shake (which is a glorified Wendys Frosty) and made my way to a booth to write this review. This is my first and last trip to the Varsity. On another note, the onion rings are outstanding (if you can order and receive them before you die of starvation)

I was in Atlanta on business and there was a Varsity around the corner from my hotel. I had heard about it on TV so I figured why not. Let me first say I love burgers and fries. It is my staple food on the road because you can get a decent one almost anywhere. I was expecting a good drive-in burger place with decent food. What I got was very sub-par. I had a chili burger and chili dog with the onion rings. I sampled some of the fries as well. The hot dog was fine (hard to mess it up) but was nothing special. The burger was dead. The meat was dry, the chili was dry and the thing looked like it had just come out of a sandwich press. I honestly would rather have had something from BK or McDs. At least their burgers have a bit of moisture in them. The chili tasted old. It looked like it had been sitting in a warming table all day. I was very unimpressed. I have had burgers from greasy dinners in the middle of nowhere that were significantly better. The onion rings and fries were the only redeeming things about the meal. The fires were fresh cut but were greasy, stuck together and just a little cold. It looked as if there were sitting in a waiting area for a bit. Still not bad. The onion rings were good. Again they were a bit greasy and cold but you could tell they were hand made and tasted good. I am sure that this is a tradition in the area to go there and I am sure it has its die-hards who will disagree with me. But I can honestly say that the meal I had at the local Checkers was better than the Varsity and cost was about the same. If you are into checking out historical places and trying local stuff then go... once. Otherwise you are better off finding the pita place 2 blocks east (great fresh food).
