I went for lunch with a friend. Its located in a Publix strip mall. Upon entering the decor was unimpressive. Actually its sort of dark with the typical booths and tables. The full service bar is the main attraction. I didnt have a drink with my meal because it was only lunch time, therefore i cant comment. For my meal I had the pineapple chicken with steam rice, but since I only eat seafood I substituted the chicken for shrimp at no extra charge! That was pleasantly surprising. The dish was good but the rice not as sticky as I like for Chinese stream rice. I had a basil steamed egg roll, rolled in rice paper that was quite tasty. The egg drop soup was good too. The meal costed only 7.50 so it was quite a bargain especially for the portion. On a scale of 1-10 the quality was a 6. Although it was lunch time, for our section there was only one server who happened to be the owner (an elderly man perhaps mid sixties) so service was a little slow. My friend had to ask for her coke 3 times before she got it. Nevertheless, he was awesome and I can only hope to be half as energetic at his age as he is. Our food came out in a timely manner. Overall, if ya in the area and want a decent Chinese meal for a good price this would be worth your time and dollar.

Okay, people complaining about the decor...folks, its in a strip mall. Adjust your expectations. Its a low-priced authentic ethnic restaurant, if you want nice decor go to PF Chang & pay double for bland, mediocre food. On my recent visit I had the satay ayam (chicken skewers with peanut sauce) and Kari Ayam Malaya (Malaysian Curry Chicken), both ordered at medium spiciness. The satay was okay. Very different from the satay ayam thats sold by street vendors in Indonesia, but mostly because of the growth hormone fed chicken that you get here in the US. It was the same as Ive had in every other Indonesian/Malaysian restaurant in the States. However, the peanut sauce was excellent & that made all the difference. As for the Kari Ayam Malaya, it was fantastic. The beef was tender, the vegetables were crisp and fresh, and the coconut milk based curry sauce was perfect. VERY spicy, even at medium heat, so if youre sensitive to this Id suggest going with the low-heat option. I look forward to going back again the next time that Im in the area.

A Newly Discovered Local Treasure Michael Chang, the proprietor, likely of Malay/Chinese British extraction (hopefully now onboard as an exemplary American success story), has tellingly been in business at the same location for 17 years. Hes good...confident - perfect poise - must know what hes doing, and has an excellent, unassuming restaurant. The fare he brought to the table for lunch today when asked to choose an "extra spicy" selection with beef and veggies, was "Basil Beef:" absolutely divine...splendidly volcanic. Hearty. Filling. Reasonably priced. Any call for Malay/Thai/Chinese cuisine should confidently be filled at "Malaya," and parents with young children they wish to bring up with manners would do well to patronize his establishment for good food, but also to let them see how a man, a gentleman in business for himself, should carry himself, and act with his patrons. Very impressive, all around...hence this review.

I live near Malaya and so Ive always considered myself fortunate to have a such an amazing second dinner option when I get sick of frozen meals at home. Everytime Ive gone to Malaya, Ive always been treated extremely well. Ive lived in Atlanta for 6 years and of the many Indian, Thai, Chinese, Italian, and other restaurants I have been to, I would take the courtesy and service of Malaya any day of the week above all. The food is terrific, I almost always get either the Pad Prik or Panang Curry, which I recommend to everyone. Ive brought different groups of friends here (of at least 7 each) here as well, and literally every single individual from each group finds the taste of the food terrific. Ive never heard a single complaint from any of them. This is a must-visit restaurant for anyone living in Atlanta. -Chetan

Have you ever had a restaurant you loved so much that you almost HATE to write a review about it, for fear that so many others will crowd one of your favorite spots?! Well Malaya is it for me in terms of Malaysian cuisine. A date once brought me here…and although I did not continue to date the guy, I definitely return here at least monthly to enjoy Rendang (Malaysian pot roast w/cabbage, cucumbers, rice), Malaysian fried rice, curry egg rolls, etc. The food is as authentic as it gets, believe me, tasting like the delectable choices I had while visiting Bali & Singapore in 2013! Never a bad culinary experience and I look forward to more great dining experiences here :)

After waiting over an hour and a half for delivery and still no food I called the store only to find out they delivered it to the wrong suite. The letters are 1 foot tall on the front door. The delivery driver was a complete jack@$$ on the phone. He said he gave the food to a guy standing outside. He never even came in our office. Then when he finally brought the food to the right address, he kept saying how there was no one next door. You big dummy. Wrong suite. He even rolled his eyes as he left. The food wasnt even that great.

Ordered pot stickers, veggie spring rolls, and chicken wonton soup. The only edible items were the pot stickers. The veggie spring rolls contained only cabbage, no other veggies. That was not really an issue for me. The fact that they were completely saturated with grease...literally, rendered them inedible. The chicken wonton soup had a strange taste to it that I could not place and there was no chicken. The wonton was beautifully folded but contained nothing...but more wonton. I will not return.

Terrible.... ordered pad Thai and Thai shrimp salad. The pad Thai was obviously reheated and the salad was brown with sprouts that were already sprouting. Called to complain (take out order) and the owner lied to me and told me that it wasnt reheated... I went to the restaurant to place my order and waited about 5 min, so unless this guy can make a dish in 5 min, it was obviously nuked in the microwave. This was my first experience and will surely be my last. My recommendation is to go somewhere else.

For a quick weeknight meal, Malaya is one of my neighborhood staples. Service is always friendly, even when busy. Better than Noodle, Top Spice or other chain Asian restaurants in Atlanta. The food is solid, the portions are big. I generally order Thai. Their roti is awesome and the Thai iced tea is also delicious. All in all, if youre looking for delicious food from a friendly, down-to-earth family establishment thats been in the neighborhood since the 90s, come to Malaya.

OK it was Tuesday but it was 7 pm and the place was basically empty and cold. It smelled strongly of disinfectant/cleaner but still felt dirty and unappealing - paint job needed. The one waitress felt it was more important to clean up a table than to acknowledge us, but was pleasant once she did. They DO NOT serve ALCOHOL. The pad thai was very sweet with no bean sprouts - among the worst I ever had. The empty plates were cold and their lack of attention to detail shows.
