I liked the space, the uniqueness of this coffee house, and my bagel, but my chai was lukewarm and my overall experience was less than satisfactory. Service makes all the difference! I came here for the first time today after a friend recommended it to me. I took a bus and the rail to get here, walked in with a smile, and promptly told the barista that it was my first time visiting Qualia. I placed my order, stood at the counter, and waited. This was my first mistake. After about 30 seconds I got a curt nod and a pointed finger to tell me, "Thats your coffee" (it was a chai, but well roll). I responded by reminding her that I had also ordered a bagel, which was why I was standing and waiting for it. Rather than saying something like, "Well let you know when its ready," (a friendly tip on how things go here), I was informed that I was neither supposed to stand and wait for my order nor able to go find my seat upstairs, because, "We wont bring it to you." Finally, after settling down to my table (with an unattached top... be careful with your drink or its gonna be on the floor), I decided to brave the barista again despite feeling flustered and completely unwelcome. I also read the "Bus your dishes- bring to counter downstairs" signs posted on my way down, so I followed directions and brought my plate back. I set it on the counter and asked for the wifi code. My second mistake: I followed directions. The same barista (clearly very busy anyway while leaning against the counter with her arms crossed) gave me another silent response with a pointed finger to the bus tub. Of course these are little things, and of course they make a big difference. My apologies to the other patrons who had to witness this "show" and to the barista for interrupting her shift with my business- it wont happen again.

Easily the best coffee in DC. They roast their beans in-house. Whenever Im in there to get a cup, I end up leaving with a bag of beans as well. They always have something like 8 or 9 different types of beans available, and if you want a specific type of bean, they grind it right there in front of you and brew a single cup. They have cold-brewed iced coffee too. One tip, though- If you like big cups of coffee like me, and you are taking it to go, bring your own travel mug because their "large" coffee is pretty damn small. Theyll fill your own up no extra charge though.

Before living in the Georgia-Petworth area, I lived in the Pacific Northwest, land of the coffee connoisseur. I would estimate that there were 25 coffee shops not named Starbucks within a 10 minute walk of my apartment. Competition was steep, and standards were high. Therefore I do not take lightly the statement that Qualia Cofee can stand with the best of them, and, without a moments hesitation, they make the best iced coffee to ever cross the threshold of my lips. They apparently spend all night cold brewing it. Visit Qualia coffee.

Dont expect flavor shots or gimmicky drinks from this great local roaster. If quality and freshness are priorities for you then youll love the wide selection of beans from around the world roasted daily in small batches. While they always have something for everyone, you wont find the same beans year-round as they constantly rotate their stock and adjust their roasts to bring out the best flavors in the beans. The store is small, though, and you may have to fight through the crowd on a weekend morning to get that perfect cuppa.

More of a review of Qualias coffee than their location itself, although thats nice too. Ive tried many different local and national roasters, and keep coming back to Qualia. They get an impressive amount of flavor of their beans, are committed to freshness, and also appear to support small farmers and responsible business practices. Im so glad to have access to them at the Columbia Heights Farmers Market and am also happy to drive to Petworth to buy beans and try one of their seasonal drink specials when the market is closed.

Gotta love a boutique coffee spot in Petworth. While, they may seem to be popping up all over the place, Qualia Coffees pour-over caffeinated offerings are far superior to anything you can get at Starbucks across the street. The shop is small, so on weekends it can get very crowded, but theyve got overflow space upstairs and a few seats outside in the front and in back when the weather is nice. Dont forget to add a pastry or bagel to your order! Everything is delicious.

Ordered a coffee au lait. The barista asked me what type of coffee Id prefer and made a recommendation. I ended up with a pour over coffee (idk what flavor) made by a pour over machine! (Pictured) he said that the machine was programmed per the owners specs so the baristas could talk more about the coffees available. Cool! Coffee was really good. Very low key vibe with local art. Would definitely pop back by next time Im in the neighborhood. :)

My favorite coffee in DC! I usually purchase from Qualia at the Columbia Heights farmers market but I also have the occasional pleasure of going to the shop in Georgia Avenue/Petworth. The staff there are really nice, the area is quiet, and they provide pleasant seating arrangements outside both in the back and front. A perfect weekend morning is made by stopping in and relaxing with a coffee and a bagel with their Hummus.

I was disappointed that they wouldnt make me a double espresso over ice to go, which apparently is considered gauche by baristas. I consider it yummy. However, the beans they roast are crazy good (Ive tried many different varieties) and the iced coffee I grumpily ordered instead of my "junk punch" to go, was insanely delicious. Probably to strongest iced coffee Ive ever had. Which is awesome.

Things to know about quaila: - they no longer offer wifi, not even on weekdays - theres extra seating upstairs - great coffee but no flavor syrups - limited selection of food (just bagels scones and cookies) - friendly and accommodating staff - cool homey vibe - cold!!! I dont know if the heat wasnt working but it was freezing upstairs especially in the bathroom

I always feel slightly intimidated when I go into an independent coffee shop. I certainly enjoy the coffee, but its not quite like Starbucks or elsewhere... Everything seems fancy. The staff is friendly and the shop generally has a welcoming vibe. There are a few places to sit so that you can work, read, or simply enjoy your drink. I plan to visit again.

Love this place. Good selection. Friendly servers. Like how there is multiple spaces and no wifi on the weekends (which is great) and they dont play loud annoying music. Its also great to be there when they are roasting! Smells amazing!!! Have been charged various prices for a cup- so specify what type you want or they will assume the most expensive one.

Cozy neighborhood coffee shop nestled in the heart of Petworth. They have beans and roasts sourced from all over the globe to choose from along with the basic breakfast goodies and baked goods. All in a no-frills space that is great for reading, or taking in the DC morning. The back patio is a great bonus, offering prime dog watching territory.

Its a quaint place with limited seating in the front of house, an impressive roaster in the middle, and a concrete box of seats in the back. Great biscuits, even better single-pours. Im still not convinced that theyre so hard pressed to turn tables that they need to skimp on the Wifi during the weekends, but thats their business decision.
