I so want to give this place a 5 for multiple reasons - (1) Its minority-owned. You gotta support brown businesses. (2) It has an authentic, DC feel. Only true locals and long-term transients know about it. (3) The food is DELICIOUS. I have never had a bad meal from here. (4) I like the cafe feel - I can dine alone and do work here comfortably. However, I am forced to give it a 1. After calling the cafe 5 times to place my carry out order and getting an answering machine each time, I trekked to the cafe anyway. Desperate for some Cajun Pasta, I waited in line patiently about 10 minutes before placing my order with the rudest waitress ever. She didnt even say hello. I was still in bliss though, because I knew my Cajun Pasta was coming. So I did a little work and before I knew it 40 minutes had passed. Where the hell was my food??? I waddled back up to the counter and inquired about the status of my order...politely. The rude waitress said..."I dont remember taking your order. Wheres your receipt?" At this point, Im trying to remain cool and let her know I clicked "no receipt" on the little fancy iPad register thingy. She said "Well, I dont remember taking your order." Eventually she found my order and said she "forgot to put the ticket up for the chef, but my order would be up soon. Itll take a minute." There was no apology or remorse for this error. She even looked annoyed with me as if this was my fault. After 20 more minutes and about 6 more patrons ordering and walking out in front of me, I still dont have any Cajun Pasta. At this point I am PISSED. After an hour and five minutes pass, I finally burst and say, "Yo, where is my food?" An older woman, who I heard referred to as Juanita walks over and says, "Oh, the computer is broken." I reply "No, I ordered an hour ago when the computer was fine." Juanita looked stunned and immediately went to the kitchen and came back 5 minutes later with my pasta. She brought it over and said under her breath "Sorry". Shes right - it was the sorriest apology Ive heard in my life. Bottom line: I felt like my money didnt matter. My patronage was not appreciated. And like I was annoying them by coming in their establishment to purchase food and service. Service was an F-. But quite honestly, I know in a week, Ill still be craving their Cajun Pasta and Steak Sandwich... Food vs. service. Why can we have both in DC???

I had a horrible experience. I had to wait 5 minutes before I could order because the cashier was on the phone and at that the cashier tried to skip me because she knew the people behind me. When I got my food it was horrible, over priced for little quantity. When my drink order got mixed up, I wasnt able to communicate it to the waiter because she didnt speak any English. At that, I had to wait 15 minutes before I got the correct the drink and had to pay $1 more. The coffee was also horrible too.

Ive been trying to find the best way to tell everyone how awesome Highlands Cafe is. They are consistently consistent - (meaning GREAT). I cant count how many times Ive been here but everyone who Ive tagged along with enjoys themselves. Highlands isnt that big so you might have to do some waiting for a table but I promise you - youll enjoy youre meal. They have great customer service as well.

Thia place was a true diamond in the rough. The reviews had me hype until I got there. I was skeptical but everything was so good. They had a vegan gyro that was delicious. My kids enjoyed the waffles. And hubby said French toast was very good. I was already stuffed but what I had of the grits was good. I would highly recommend this place.

I started coming here when they first opened. They are in my neighborhood, Mo (the owner) and his family are a warm and friendly bunch of folk. The food is delicious. This will always be one of my favorite spots. Get the blackened tilapia, the shrimp and grits, the crabcakes, the vegan gyro... I could go on forever. JUST GO!!!

They worked with us for a recent private event. We had a group from out of town and the owner of the house we rent highly recommended Highlands and Moe. I am so glad she did! The food was delicious and it was so nice to have a private space for our group dinner. We plan to frequent Highlands whenever we are back in town.

Great food, each dish made with effort, dedication. Only issue i have is the person that runs the place has changed since i first been there. The young woman claims that they dont have waiters/waitresses so you might have to go up to register to place order. Which i think is ridiculous especially if they expect a tip

Its a great neighborhood spot with very good comfort food for breakfast and dinner as well as lighter options such as a turkey sandwich. There is a small alcohol is beverage menu and it tends to get crowded so you may be waiting on a table when you arrive. Also, great macchiato.

Great chicken and waffles! Quaint little place with a vibrant and warm atmosphere. The food is good, the service is relatively fast and the customer service is good. The other menu items are great, but I think the star dish here is the chicken and waffles. Check them out!

Been going here since they opened and it will always be our neighborhood spot. They even catered my college graduation party. The food is great...tilapia, curry chicken, chicken and waffles are good starting points. Seating is right and I hope they expand soon!

Family-owned local favorite. Dedicated to the balance of flavors-- sweet requires sour, chocolate needs salt. This simple and quaint eatery offers a thoughtful menu that includes delicious dishes with a Southern flair. Each bite is delightful.

Nice place for college students looking to grab a quick bite or someone very hungry, I just left there, not only was it cold in the cafe, but the food was bland and the French toast was dry. Not worth going out of my way to get breakfast.

This place is amazing!!! Very impressed with the menu. Simple, but yet something for everyone. Food tasted amazing and food prices will not hurt your pocket at all ( matter a fact, order two entrees). I will be there every other Sunday!!!

I like this place especially for the breakfast. However, Ive been calling and asking about the barbecue tofu burger (Ive had it once and enjoyed it) for about 2 months and theyre always out. Thats fine. But why do u have it on the menu?
