Horrible experience. I visited this place with a friend on Jan. 10, 2012. We got there shortly after it opened (8am) which may have been the problem. It was a cold day, but it was stiflingly, barely breathing hot in the place - and we quickly removed our coats/hats. Next, the young lady who took our order must have been new. She took forever to get to us, and when she did she was very abrupt. She also never checked back with us after our food was served. All she would have had to do was look up and speak a little loudly - the place is tiny. Heres what was so bad: we both ordered the 3 egg omelet. My friend ordered no cheese, with sausage and got an 80% done cheese with no sausage. My omelet (cheese & onion) was 90% undone - the egg was still clear on the inside. Odd since it took so long to get the food. My coffee was served in a cup that looked as though it had not been washed properly in years - brown coffee streaks up and down the inside of the cup. The table was so dirty I was afraid to touch it. I could tell it had been wiped down, however, all the crumbs/food particles had just been slid around on the table and I could see the swipe marks from where it was left to dry. My silverware was disgusting - still had dried on food on it. When the head waitress, I guess, came in the first thing she did was turn on the vents. Then we could all breathe. She must have been the only one allowed to touch it because the other 2 workers (the new girl and the grill guy) never bothered. Im sorry, but first impressions matter. I read a lot about this place and was excited to go there and thought I would get a wonderful experience. What I got was so bottom of the barrel that I cant ever imagine it being as good as anyone says. Perhaps you shouldnt go right at opening time...but if a place is supposedly as good as the hype, then it shouldnt matter what time you go. I will never go back, nor will I advise anyone to go here. It may have been good or even very good back in the day, but it is NOT now. Did I mention the bullet hole on the INSIDE of the glass where I was sitting? Take your business to Bens Chili Bowl just down the street (we did). Youll be much better off.

My buddy and I decided to give this humble hole in the wall a try this morning... And it was definitely an experience. When we walked in, we were sat at a table in the side nook by the hostess rather quickly, which was about the only nice thing about the experience. She seemed to have forgotten the fact that we would need menus as she walked off. Our waiter finally came and gave us menus, along with attitude the entire duration of our stay here. I have a feeling he had a stint or two behind bars from his demeanor. I would tell you his name, but he never bothered introducing himself before asking what we wanted. You cant miss him: hes the one with the disinterested face and the throwback New Orleans Hornets colored sneakers. We started off with sweet tea... Then quickly returned it and opted for water. The aftertaste of bottom-of-the-barrel tea and artificial sweeteners was staggering. The food was no better. Literally everything that my friend and I ordered looked like something out of the frozen food isle; and it tasted even worse. From consistency, to flavor, to presentation, literally everything on our table was lackluster at best. I would go into detail about each particular item, but nobody would want to read that book. On top of that, the waiter forgot bits of our meal and acted inconvenienced whenever we asked for them (guess chatting with coworkers was more important at the time). Long story short, for a "soul food" establishment thats been around this long, the service should have been cultivated already, the food shouldve been perfected already, and the atmosphere should be much more homie than this joint. We were thoroughly disappointed by our experience here. Its safe to say they wont be getting anymore of our money after today.

I am Mad at myself for living in the DMV for 6 years and never visiting here. Honestly, I did not even know about it until I saw it on the travel channel. That is disappointing that no one talks about this place that has soo much history! Location- Small diner, but you can really tell it is full history. signed photos from all types of celebrities and history from people of color in there. they had the front door open because it was hot in there. few gnats flying around but nothing major. they have outside seating but there are only 2 tables and they are full. Food: My favorite part... Ahhh. The food was amazing all the way around. I am a southern girl and I am not easily pleased, but I promise that someones grandmother cooked this food. This was the first time I had grits and did not have to add anything to them. The catfish was perfectly seasoned and fried crispy. The homefries (potatoes) were already seasoned with green peppers and onions, the sweet tea and lemonade mix did not give you a sugar rush. The eggs....oh the eggs, cheese was actually cooked into the eggs and not placed on top. Payment- I wanted this place to be cash only soo bad. lol but they do accept cards. I feel like when a place only accepts cash, they know that their food is so good you will be forced to go to the ATM. lol Server- I felt like home, i didnt catch his name, but he was a young guy very straight forward. not too much conversation but he was very attentive and delivered exceptionally well. overall this place gets 5 stars and I will definitely take everyone here.

First time there. So i decided to try them out. Had a taste for some chitterlings so i called, it was a little before 10am, i asked if they were just serving breakfast. She said were serving everything. So i asked bout the chitterlings, she said hold on let me check, she came back to the phone and said yes theyre ready. So, i get there and ask about the chitterlings, the young lady (which was very kind) said we only serving breakfast til 11am, i responded, i called a few minutes ago and someone told me you all were ready to serve all meals. So she said let me ask my manager (which was sitting at the end of the counter) before she stepped off, i said also ask her if i could sample the chitterlings. She returned with good news saying i could order, but i couldnt sample the chitterlings. I never eat other folk chitterlings, but decided to today. So i said ok. Dumb me, shouldve ordered something else. The food disgusting, service of manager unprofessional. I WILL NEVER GIVE MY SERVICE THERE AGAIN. Im black and try to support black business, but some really dont deserve it at all.

OMG if you want some down-home southern cooking then you come to this restaurant and they will accommodate you. Its not fancy; theres counter and table service; the food is good; and its a clean establishment! I have been coming here for years and the food is always good, no let me change that excellent, no wait let me change THAT... SUPERB!!! southern cooking, Mamas cooking, okay?! Lets be clear though... Its a diner and its small. Even if theres a wait it happens really quickly, youd be surprised! Wow I thought I posted this 3 weeks ago well Im going to add to it! I came back because the fish was so good well today the fish was terrible and I had a do-over the first one was hard as a rock and small the second one was smaller and dry. Im very disappointed! And the little boy that waited on me he was disappointed too when I only tipped a dollar. If he was going to put it in his pocket I would have given him more but since the cook was going to take part of it I didnt feel it was warranted... done done and done!
